Holy shit, Michigan is looking like shit out of the gate. Hope things improve.

Ugh. Doesn't help that Wisconsin has only missed one shot...
But we need to stop giving them the baseline any time they please.
lose by 30. I can't be the only one watching this.
I'm at work keeping track of the GameCast... online radio isn't working for me. The way things are going I'm glad I can't watch it right now.
pass the ball! i like how college is so physical, but come on. The refs need to be more consistent on both ends. Just sick of watching one thing be a foul on one end, and its just fine down at the other. i need consistency!
anyone else hear "zach get the fuck out"?
yeah i did a double take when i heard it
thank god for lucas-perry and novak, 26-21
with Sims and Manny on the bench. wtf
Is they are both sick.
I love living and dying by the three... when we're draining them. Not so much when we're shooting terribly. Swings are going to happen, so it'd be nice to have an inside presence to help smooth things out a bit.
Manny is getting fucking killed.
Novak. My man.
when Manny getting gang-raped in the lane is not?
i thought i was the only one noticing that
...with the amount of steps he takes everytime he catches the ball. Jesus he's uncoordinated.
Refs are hosing us so far...Sims looks like his legs are dead. No energy. Manny not sharp either.
Anyone else want to see Shep get a shot at guarding Luer? That guy is killing us.
Novak is just an effing player
F Me. Is Wisconsin actually this good of a shooting team, or are they playing out of their minds right now?
Where is grady?
CJ Lee was kicking ass when he was in too
....until we're down by more points than minutes left....thats when I start by worrying.
Long way to go and UM has been a second half team all season long. They'll make a couple strong runs at Wisco in the second half.
This is not over by a long shot.
Neither Manny or DeShawn will be heading for the NBA this year if this is indicative of how they'll do against bigger, more physical competition.
What's the score at the half?
I'm not gonna lie people, I took the bait on the 2nd Half line.
UM -4.....that means as the final score goes, I have UM +7.....I would have jumped all over that if that was the actual game line......UM was favored by 4.
I like what they've done all season coming out of the intermission.
this game is over.
Even RichRod and his kid looked bored. Ugh.
Alert the media.
And then promptly gets screwed by the refs again. Obviously he's not going to comfortable in the lane when he's getting raped each and every time he drives.
Wiscy is shooting out of their minds right now.
Needs to adjust to what he's being given (or not being given) and kick the ball out.
i'm gonna puke
lack of intensity and fire is horrible
I'm just going to consider Wisconsin one of the best of the Big Ten (11) so I feel better about this.
FG, 3PT, FT
They are shooting well, but as is usually the case, our defense (or lack thereof) is playing a big role.
These refs are just plain awful.
I can't believe how they are NOT calling some fouls and ARE calling some others that are a lot less valid of fouls.
1 for 638?
He's got to have the flu or something.
Give Brian credit. He's been cautioning everyone the last few weeks that we weren't guaranteed a trip to the NCAA tourney. It could be that we're still a a year and another big man away from going to the big dance.
Don't tell me our basketball refs are getting as bad as the football replay refs. This is pretty crappy. Doesn't help that Wisco is shooting the lights out.
I'm still trying to figure out why the refs called a foul at the end of regulation in the Illinois/Purdue game last night.
How is it an offensive foul if the defender's feet aren't even on the ground?!
If the offensive player lowers his shoulder and bulls through a guy it really doesn't matter if the defender's feet are set, that will be called an offensive foul every single time. And Harris definitely lowered his shoulder into the guy on that one.
Shot less than 40% and couldn't shoot FTs. Wisky shot lights out. Neither of those things are going to hold up over time. It sucks, but that's basketball sometimes.
Agreed. It's going to take a few more games like this in the Big Ten for me to get really worried about this team, but I am disappointed in their lack of enthusiasm throughout the game. It's the Big Ten opener, play with a little bit of heart.
You really think they weren't playing with "heart"? C'mon. Can we please move on from the "failure to perform = moral failing" meme? Maybe the worst thing to ever happen to American sports.
Yes and no. I don't think we lost because of "moral failing," but from what I saw there wasn't that much emotion throughout the game. No one looked excited. Teams in general, but especially teams as streaky as we are, play much better when they're pumped up. Some of that has to do with the crowd and such, but the players need to come out firing on all cylinders.
However, like you said, this was a failure to perform.
Failure to perform is not equivalent to moral failing, but moral failing contributes to failure to perform.
and completely subjective. "Looks excited"? C'mon. Your interpretation of how they may or may not have felt going into the game is ad hoc reasoning. You can't separate a lack of excitement from sucking. It's the inverse of clutch.
People are surprised Wiscy is good?
Or are people surprised UM is playing poorly?
mostly b/c our D sucked. i mean, at one point in the 1st half, i thought, "well, they can't keep hitting layups at an 85% clip." uuhhhhhhh... yeah they can. they hit a few big outside shots too, but that just kept the lead at a dozen. poor interior D in the 1st half killed them. also, crisler is really quiet.
The quiet is all the students' fault for going home for break. Damn you, students, for being normal!
this looks like a game from last year?
Last year, the opener was a loss to Wisconsin and the gap was bigger.
So, could have been worse. I'd hoped for better, and maybe if they hadn't started so slow there'd have been more of a chance for a W.
I was there. Good crowd - definitely the largest of any game outside of Duke. Though the students weren't there, the atmosphere was still pretty good.
I think today we may have seen the effects of playing NC Central on Monday night (it ended about 40 hours before this one). We failed to put that team away early and ended up playing our starters heavy minutes. And then today, a lot of guys, most notably Manny, looked like they didn't have their legs under them. We put up a lot of outside shots that fell short, and missed more free throws than usual. We seemed a step slow in our defensive rotations, too, especially early on. Novak was the one guy who really brought it today. Too bad his great game was wasted.
So we're saying the UNCC game not only cost us 15 spots in RPI for playing them, but they tired us out to lead to a Wisconsin loss, dropping us further? Damn you.
I was really disappointed with the lack of kicking the ball to the wing on drives. Almost every drive we had through the lane lead to the entire Wisconsin defense collapsing into the lane. My math may be fuzzy, but 1 Michigan offensive player and 5 defensive players in the lane means 4 wide open shooters on the perimeter. We appeared to be happy to try and draw fouls when the officiating was obviously not going to oblige.
Also, on defense, we desperately lack size. Landry dunking over Merritt? Merritt even defending Landry? What happened there?
Lastly, Novak is now apparently David Eckstein.
DE ever went 5-5 w/ 6 RBI and 5 runs scored in a game. Novak was money all night... and not just shooting the ball. rebounding, hustle, being in the right spot at the right time.
Well, I'll be the first to bring it up:
Why is Beilein not playing Javohn Shephard? He's our best on the ball defender, he needs to be in the game. I know he isn't the best shooter, but seriously, you're never going to win a game with defensive efforts like that.
If we're going to keep playing small, why not Javohn at the 4? I like this lineup:
Also, Anthony Wright should be getting Stu Douglass' minutes. They are essentially the same player on offense (ok, slight edge to Stu, but slight), yet Wright can actually, you know, stay in front of a defender.
Wright's not the answer. A shooting "specialist" who shoots 30% and brings absolutely nothing else to the table isn't going to help us much. Douglass is in a slump but is still vastly more valuable.
As for Shepherd, he usually plays more than he did yesterday. I don't know if he was under the weather or if Beilein decided that, given the deficit, we needed more offense. Shepherd's failure to make any kind of shot beyond three feet really limits his game.
is so bad at shooting the ball, i'm beginning to wonder if he's left handed.
plus, if he get a lot of PT, he'll probably Xcheck/hit some dude from behind into the boards. and not get called for a 5min major. fucking cannucks.
