LMAO at the Sun Devils

Who do they think they are getting: Steven Threet or Tom Brady? Clearly, there is a difference.

http://www.houseofsparky.com/2009/4/27/856282/breaking-news-michigan-qb-...

Also, in the comments section, you can read such things as "I would rather see Threet start than Sullivan" or "Too bad he has to sit out a year". They have no idea how terrible he is.

If you could not tell, I was never a Threet fan. It is true that he is a better fit for a pro-style offense, but there is only so much you can blame on the spread. For example, if you can't throw a spiral, you can't throw a spiral. If you can't hit a wide-open receiver, well, you get the point. What do you think?

Unfortunately, many people don't have a clue what freshmen/redshirt freshmen quarterbacks look like, because we're not allowed to watch practices and that's the only time they usually play.

I don't get the "system" argument that we got from Mallett and now Threet (not saying they don't believe it, just that it has no merit in my opinion). Rodriguez has produced NFL QB's. King was a decent/serviceable starter in the league and Pat White (who nobody wanted as a QB) just got drafted. His offense led the nation in passing (I'm pretty sure, but if not they were real close) when he was at Tulane.

I think Mallett really wanted to be at Arkansas in the first place (didn't go because of Mustain) and had issues getting along with teammates at UM. Buying into the "system" argument was just the cherry on top. Threet probably saw the writing on the wall that he wasn't going to play ever again barring a series of injuries this season. His struggles in the offense had nothing to do with the system that was being run. You don't make poor decisions or miss open throws because of the system (though I give him a big pass due to the fact that we had ZERO returning talent/experience last year and a very subpar O-line).

I wish both kids well and hope they succeed (think Mallett will and Threet probably won't), but the "can't succeed in this system" argument is ridiculous. Teams like OU, UF, and USC (Arkansas and ASU, too) all use multiple receivers and put their QB in the gun. The idea that Rodriguez runs some offense from outer space that no passing quarterback can succeed in is silly and has been proven wrong by history.

It is spelled HOKEAMANIA.  Our coach is an ass-kicking American citizen, not one of the Beatles, for Christ's sake!

Rodriguez has produced ONE quarterback worthy of the NFL. Pat White was being viewed as a receiver by many NFL teams, ______________ from Clemson (I'm blanking on his name) was a kick returner and wide receiver for the Cowboys, Rasheed Marshall was a practice squad WR, and others didn't make it.

Shaun King. That's it.

On top of that, Michigan runs a read option spread. That offense is unlike a pro-style offense and unlike the 5-wide spread that Mike Leach runs at Texas Tech. Threet has a strong arm, but a) our receivers couldn't beat anyone deep, b) our offensive line wasn't very good, and c) he was asked to throw a lot of short passes, which may not be his strength.

Could he have been better? Yes. Is there a chance that this system isn't right for him? Absolutely.

Every system has a fit. Pat White wasn't being recruited to play QB in pro-style offenses like Michigan's, because it wouldn't have been a good fit. Why do you expect Threet to be successful in Pat White's offense, but nobody expected Pat White to be successful in Lloyd Carr's or Pete Carroll's offense?

"Threet left everything on the field for his team last year. Taking multiple injuries including a concussion for a season that was likely to be a lost cause well before RR was even hired thanks to the gaping holes in the roster. As a redshirt freshman, he played behind the worst OL in my memory of Michigan football, his two best RBs (Minor and Brown) started the season injured and the #3 RB (McG) didn't finish the season either.

I'm not sure what you were expecting out of the young man, but he completed over 50% of his passes and had more TDs than INTs.

I wish Threet all the best and thank him for what he went through last year. Hopefully, Michigan will get to face him in the Rose Bowl after the 2010 season."

Steven Threet just does not have the tools to be an elite QB. Sometimes the recruiting sites overlook kids. Sometimes they overrate them. The latter is the case with Threet. I do not view him as a '4-star' prospect. His ranking is irrelevant.

First, let me point out that I appreciate the effort he gave last year. He put forth 100% through pain and injury, which is all you can ask from a kid. Clearly, he has guts. My criticism of Threet is not personal. I am sure he is a good human being, which is far more important.

In terms of ability, here is what he has going for him: 6'6" and mediocre arm strength. I will also give him this: Poor decision making can improve with experience. It ends there. He does not throw a good ball, nor is he possess any sort of accuracy. These skills do not usually improve with time. In short, he just does not have the 'it' factor. His shortcomings are system-independent.

BTW - My LMAO was not at Threet. The joke is in the link.

I can produce a very recent example of a QB improving DRAMATICALLY over time: Matt Stafford...you may have heard that he was just the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft.

Check out Stafford's stat line as a first year starter (granted, he was a true freshman, not a RS freshman like Threet), then compare it to his sophomore and junior years.

http://uga.rivals.com/cviewplayer.asp?Player=68896

Note: I should point out that I think Stafford is DRAMATICALLY overrated. The guy never accomplished anything at UGA, but he still showed remarkable improvement from his God-awful freshman year to his second year.

(To the tune of Where the Streets have no name.)

He can't run
I want to hide
He can't option the ball
To the outside
I want him to pitch out
And win one damn game
Where Steve Threet is to blame

I'm glad he'll feel sunlight on his face
Happy he disappeared without a trace

I want to remove him from my brain
Where Steve Threet is to blame

Where Steve Threet is to blame
Where Steve Threet is to blame
We're still building
And Tate is great, Tate is great
And when I go bowling
I go there with you...
(You people need to get a clue)

The kid played his ass off. Get over it.

Accuracy can improve greatly if a kid works on his mechanics. If accuracy doesn't improve, then what's the point of working on a kid's mechanics?

Do you really think this kid is going to be a stud?
If so, you are crazy.
If not, why was it worth it for him to leave? Playing for Michigan was his dream. He will spend the rest of his career on the bench wherever he goes (except Adrian college).

The answer you're looking for is no. The point being: you can go to another school with a system that is tailored to what your play style is and contribute.
I don't think Threet will win the Heisman, but he has desire, courage, and skill. Just because the TEAM(not just him) played poorly last year, doesn't mean that Steven Threet is garbage. It means you're bitter about UM having a bad season, and he's the easiest to blame. Quite sad, really.

Please find a statement from me where I said he's going to be a stud.

All I said was that this system didn't fit him, and it's slightly ridiculous to expect him to be Pat White/Woody Dantzler when he's 6'6", 230, and a pro-style quarterback. Like I said above, nobody expected Pat White to be the second coming of Carson Palmer at USC. Why should we expect Threet to be the second coming of Pat White?

I understand, it's a picture of Brady in your link, not Threet, but "LMAO at the Sun Devils" implies "I can't believe these suckers are giving Threet a chance. He's horrible and they are idiots and I can't wait for them to fail for this so I can laugh at them."

After all, the photo is the number 2 photo under google images for "Steven Threet." I hardly blame an uninformed ASU blogger for stealing the image and putting it on his blog when they have the same number. It would be LMAO if it came from the ASU athletic department, but otherwise, who cares?

Good luck to Threet. I think he made the right decision to transfer because I honestly don't feel it would be enjoyable for him to continue in this offense for 3 more years, taking a bunch of hits and not possessing the athleticism to do what the coaches desire. Most people would be unhappy in that situation. I wish him the best at ASU.

He definitely needs help with his mechanics. It was tough to watch Steven struggle last year with even the easiest of throws. To watch Greg Mathews and Odoms run down the field wide open and have Steven over throw them by 10 yards. I'm going through the tapes from 2008 and watching a lot of our WR's open, and the ball is either thrown behind them, over their head, in the dirt.......

Well, if everyone disagrees with me, and thinks I am an asshole, then I must be wrong.

While still don't think Threet will ever become a great QB, it appears as though I was too harsh on him. Like I said earlier, he is probably a good kid and he gave our team his best effort. I am not quite sure why I was overly critical. Perhaps it is just the offseason blues.

BTW, before I kiss my own ass, I am going to wait for him to develop into a good QB. If so, I will post pics.
