Representing the Big 10 in fine fashion in the NIT. Showing that there probably was a case for 8 B10 teams in the Big Dance. At least they should have been ahead of Minny IMHO.
alternate headline: man does job
Ahead of Minnesota how?
Granted, they had one more B10 win. But their non-conference schedule was one of the worst in all of Division 1 basketball. They had an RPI in the 70s, and as you might figure based on non-conf SOS, their overall SOS wasn't very good. They also had no marquee wins, unless you consider Temple a marquee win.
Minnesota beat Louisville, a team that was the #1 overall seed in the Tournament (even if they did lose to MSU in the Elite Eight), on a neutral court.
Other than more B10 win, I don't see how PSU was more deserving than Minnesota.
This is my opinion.
HOWEVA, it remains the truth that PSU winning is good for B10 cred.
All I'm saying is that this evidence lends credence to Penn St being a better team than Minny. Hindsight and all that. Especially since Penn St beat Sparty, who beat Louisville, and such.
B10 did well for itself. with us and wisc escaping the 1st round, purdue going relatively deep, and msu still having a shot at the title
Yeah, the only school that didn't meet or exceed expectations was Illinois.
Michigan, Wisconsin, MSU
Purdue, Minnesota, OSU
OSU was the #32 vs #33 overall seeds so I count it as meeting expectations.
Beat their seed, also.
They were a #5 and made the Sweet 16....i know its not a huge advancement, but a lot of the pundits, like the anti-Big 10 Boys Digger, Dickie V and H. Davis all picked UW in the second round game.
So, I'm willing to give them a nod for beating their seed.
played a tougher schedule over the long haul, including a win over UL, IIRC.
