We got an official from Khairi Fortt, which is always good.
Khairi Fortt Official Visit
One thing to keep in mind about Fortt and his recruitment. Silas Redd (PSU running back commit) has been working him, he's been to Happy Valley numerous times...but he's a luxury to them. I know that sounds insane, since he's the #26 player in the country...but that's how loaded they are at linebacker. If he drags it out, they may cool on him, because they don't need him.
Here's to hoping the official visit he plans on taking to Michigan materalizes, and RR and company are able to plant a bug in his head.
though, isn't he one of those players who you would want to take no matter what? i find it hard to believe, without researching, that PSU has a 2 deep of linebackers at least equally as good as fortt lined up
edit: upon further research on rivals, i found that since 2006 they have gotten 11 4* linebackers (none lower rated than that). though i didn't bother to check where they were all rated. they also got this goofy looking fellow: http://bwi.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=39400
so maybe they really don't neeeeed him, but i'm sure they'd still press for him. right?
Thhis is good news. We really need a linebacker.
That is great news, wow.
Wait, who do you root for again?
Wonderful news. I hope to hear an update of the 'gut feeling' kind from Sam Web soon.
For a little context, I played HS football in the same conference as Khairi Fortt (FCIAC). Not that this is saying much, but this is generally considered the top league in the state of CT, and there is a small handful of FCIAC players currently on D1 rosters, including a couple B10 players. Stamford High has not been a particularly strong program in several decades, but Fortt has been making news since he was a freshman and having seen him play live, I have little doubt he could be an impact player early on. A potential concern is the low level of competition he has faced, as New England football is not well-respected nationally, but his camp performances have put much of that to rest. Hopefully his visit goes well.
we kick some ass on the field while he's here on his official.
As they say just get the kid on campus and you never know what might happen. Good job by the coaching staff to at least get him interested enough to give us a visit.
So it's Fortt or bust?
I do not think Furman will play middle linebacker. He will probably play Stevie Brown's position(spinner).
but it's not as critical as some other positions (CB, for example). Right now there is Ezeh, Mouton, Demens, JB Fitzgerald for certain at ILB. Each one of the returns next year as well. Additionally. B. Smith is being moved either to ILB or SLB. Then factor in the potential for Mike Jones or Ike Bell moving inside, and there is depth. While it would be nice to get a top notch ILB in this class, I don't think it's critical.
Realistically, the only guys you listed who could play ILB are Mouton, Demens, and probably Fitzgerald. The rest are all OLB guys, including Mouton, who starts there now.
and I think Bell can grow into one. But again, the entire two deep returns for next season. So while it would be nice to get an ILB I would prefere to shore up the secondary first, where there are still walkons in the two deep.
Well, agree to disagree then. Safeties grow into WILL LB's a lot (see Mouton and Burgess) but the body type of a Safety and a MIKE is quite different. Bell will likely play the Spinner or WILL, but we'll need to recruit a true LB to play the MIKE.
