Looks like he's committing today. Apparently it's down to Penn State, BC and and VT. Any ideas on which way he's leaning Tom? I'd like to keep him out of the Big 10 if at all possible.

I have no problem with him at Penn State. Once RR gets all his players in place and via graduation and expired eligibility gets rid of all that weak Lloyd Carr talent (with the exception of Brandon Graham), and gets his system well established why should we care where Newsome is? I am not afrade of him at PSU. he would have been a better QB had he gone to Michigan.

Regardless of how good we are, we will always care where other outstanding players go, if one of the options is another power team in our conference. I'm not saying we should be afraid of him, but I'd prefer him to beat up on ACC teams than make our job more difficult. Penn State not exactly a pushover without him, remember.

So, are we still OK that this kid decommitted and was replaced with Forcier? He seems like a monster talent who would have been very nice to retain. Any fresh insight into his attraction to PSU/VT over a Michigan offense that would fit him very well? I would hate to see him commit to PSU and Boyd commit to OSU. These are the type of athletes we NEED at QB.

We did better against Terrelle Pryor than Purdue's 3rd string RB at QB.

I have been a bigger Forcier fan than Newsome from the beginning. Newsome is an excellent athlete, but he's a project at QB.*

*I think he will be good, but not for a few years.

I've read in a couple of places that he's now being thought of more as an "athlete" than as a qb. If that's in fact the case, we may have dodged a bullet when he de-committed, since we might not have gotten Forcier if he stayed around.

Fuck, I have a fairly reliable source that tells me he was a VTech lock for the past few weeks, but Pat Devlin leaving flipped things around completely. He is in all likelihood going to commit to Penn State.

Also I'm hearing Ohio State is the leader for Tahj Boyd right now. He is still going to visit Oregon, but OSU is his most likely destination.

No 2-way QB scares me anymore, including Pryor. Look at what Miami (yes, that Miami) and Auburn have done to scrambling QBs for the past decade. Now we're getting that speed on the field. You saw our D-line against Pryor, it's different now.

This seems eerily familiar.

Is Penn State possibly allowing its 5-star Pro-Style QB out the door, only to get turned down by the Dual-Threat toast of the class, and end up with a Walk-On starting when their legendary coach retires and the cupboard is bare?

Naw -- that could never happen to an historic Big Ten program like Penn State.

They're getting turned down by Russell Shephard?

Brian Randall (isn't that his name, started ahead of Marcus Vick for a year or two?) was also a third-stringer with the Falcons for awhile. Virginia Tech must be coaching its kids okay. But, really, outside of a few really top QB-producing schools (Michigan was one until Loeffler left), it probably doesn't matter so much where he goes among the good BCS programs if he wants a shot at the NFL. I'd say PSU and VT are about equal in that regard, and BC maybe not far behind, if at all.

That said, I'd rather not have to play him, but if PSU doesn't get him, they'll get someone else similar.

I'd say Boston College is WAY ahead of both in regard to developing NFL quarterbacks.

Matt Hasselbeck, Matt Ryan, Tim Hasselbeck started a few games, Doug Flutie (admittedly a long time ago).

PSU has Kerry Collins and that's about it (since Michael Robinson is a RB now, I don't count him).

VT has...Michael Vick, who was/is an okay NFL quarterback. But he was never a great passer. He was just a physical freak, and Virginia Tech's program had very little to do with the fact that he was spawned by the Flash and Super Javelin Throwing Woman (I may have made that second superhero name up...).

I dunno, I welcome all the talent in the world to come and play in the Big 10. Not only would that make the conference more competitive, but a one loss team out of the Big 10 will get serious consideration for the national championship. As long as we get our guys, I really don't care who others get. If we fall behind in recruiting than yea maybe I will care.

Fair points, Magnus. BC has done a solid job recently. In fact, considering the talent they draw (were many of those guys very highly regarded as recruits), one could argue they've done better than the others. I don't know their coaching turnover, but if the same development system is in place, that would be a solid choice.
