JoePa - No Notre Dame in Big Ten

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FBC_PATERNO_BIG_TEN_EXPANSION?SIT...

Just came across this short AP article posted tonight in which JoePa names names in adding a 12th Big Ten team. He said he'd like to see either Syracuse, Pittsburgh, or Rutgers join the conference. He wants an Eastern team with exposure in the New York media market.

As for Notre Dame, he doesn't want them. "They've had their chance," he said.

it doesn't make.....

sense logistically to bring in rutgers, but pitt or the cuse could work. but they have to whats best for the big ten and out of those 3 teams pitt would be the best option. but overall ND is still the team they have to get, they already play 3 big ten teams every year for the most part. and if ND ever gets back on track they could be that 3rd team that PSU was supposed to be when they came into the big ten.....

Rutgers is the best choice

because they are a decent (like an Iowa or Purdue) school, are at most a 2-3 hour flight away from Purdue/ Indiana/ Chicago and most importantly get the NY Market in.

Cuse is good in basketball, terrible in football, and upstate NY is not a large or growing market. Same with Pittsburgh.

I'm still holding out for

I'm still holding out for Louisville, an up-and-coming team in football (the past 10 or so years), expands the TV market southwards, makes geographic sense, and helps multitudes in basketball strength.

Louisville, Cincinnati, West

Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia may make sense from geographic and marketing standpoints, but their academic standing rules them out. The Big 10 presidents won't sign off on an institution that perceptively lowers the CIC's academic profile.

When considering new Big 10 members, just repeat: AAU member, AAU member.

Truth o the matter is...

Penn State belongs in the Big East. That's where their old rivalries are. Don't get me wrong, I love that they're in the Big 10. They just should have joined the Big East long ago, but the Big East refused to let them in because they were not good enough in basketball.

I don't want to see a 12th team in the Big 10 unless there is a round robin and no champ game, but ND, should it be placed in a conference, similarly belongs in the Big 10 if you make a judgment solely on who their rivals are (Mich, MSU, Purdue), That is a completely subjective judgement; they also have important rivalries with Navy and USC, and then BC, Stanford, and supposedly Pitt. I don't know. Just leave the status quo I guess. Whatever the case, I think that Penn St should restore its rivalry with Pitt.

The thing about Notre Dame is

Whatever money the conference brings in by adding them will be offset by the catering bill for the annual coaches conference.

(You know, because he's very fat.)

geography

I am totally against any more eastern teams. I agree with Tim above that PSU is a big east team. It is schlep to get there from just about anywhere in the B-10 save maybe Columbus.

If it is not going to be ND, then the only other major conference schools that would make any sense are Missouri or Iowa State.

The only other school that I see as having any potential is Miami of Ohio. They are in a talent rich state and have a good academic reputation.

Certainly would not be a huge splash like ND or even another school from a major conference, but I think Miami has a good enough foundation that by joining a major conference they would be able to increase their profile.

I think recruiting-wise, it may hurt M a little (I think there would be as much competetion to OSU as Minnesota has in hockey from Mankato, St Cloud, Bmidji and Duluth - which is to say, very little), but there are a lot of great players in Ohio, who when they dont get OSU offers go to M or other B10 schools.
