Jim McElwain Is Totally Over It Comment Count

Ace

ESPN asked a number of coaches to give their quick takes on Jim Harbaugh. Diplomatic terms such as interesting, amusing character, eccentric, and, uh, interesting again are put forth. I cannot get enough of everything about Kevin Wilson's answer:

The clear winner, for a given definition of the term, is Florida's Jim McElwain, who definitely does not see Jehu Chesson all alone in the end zone every time he closes eyes. Definitely not.

Definitely not.

Anyone have an opinion on the bizarre media coverage given to Jim Harbaugh? Their fawning is wild and, I'm sure, driving every other coach in the country crazy. I mean I love it, but just curious to know if anyone thinks its weird how much of this Harbaugh obsession is just derived for click bait and whatnot.

Yeah, I kind of find it weird at this point. He's pushing conventional and traditional boundaries I suppose but not doing anything outlandish or illegal. And he is who he is. I would think the media attention would have faded at this point. He hasn't acted any different than he has at any other point in his life. There's not a lot new to see here.

He's always the source of new stuff. And, unlike most other great coaches, he is entertaining. Belichek and Saban are impenetrable. Meyer is a decent interview, but he's pretty vanilla. Harbaugh has been doing unexpected stuff ("What's your deal?") since his first college stint, carried it into the NFL, and then shockingly brought it back to Michigan. He makes news.

It's all a sideshow to me. I care about wins. Fortunately, he seems equippd to do that.

I agree with you totally. It just seems so weird to me. He's not the first intense coach. Their football coaches. They're all intense. The attention just seems so contrived on the media's side. I hate too that non-Michigan fans also think that it's Michigan fans stirring this pot up. I don't care if he climbs a tree or does a rap video. I just want to see results on the field.

And if the guy happens to drop some dope lines about the B-1-G I'm cool with that too.

The biggest thing for me is that the talking heads say I'm tired of always talking about Jim Harbaugh and his antics 24/7 when they (the media) are the ones choosing to follow his every move. They spin him as desperate for attention when it's obvious he couldn't care less, even if he does embrace it. They are crating the circus, Harbaugh being himself and doing his job. I wish they would just admit it.. Jim Harbaugh is an exceptional coach and fascinating, eccentric, entertaining person and they can't get enough of him. They act as if Harbaugh is forcing them to talk about him.

It bothers me to see all these professionals who don't respect someone who excels in their profession.

The only equivalent coach they spoke to was Urban, and seemed to give a serious response. I suspect Harbaugh would have done the same.

Whenever there's a changing of the guard, people tend to hold on to the present a little tighter. One need go no further than Larry, Magic and Michael announcing "There's a new sheriff in town," before all camps started disagreeing with one another. Every honest fan knew there were three great bb players, but only one fan base, those following Michael, dared tell the truth. It happens in every sport, be it player, manager/coach, et. al. After the denial the agreement becomes consensus until the next, best thing arrives.

What has he done to earn their respect yet. Malzhan doesn't owe him anything, McElwain is still in shock from the ass kicking (and his answer wasn't disrespectful but if he didn't glow about him at least it's based on something. He actually met him. Maybe JH rubbed him the wrong way before or after the game, I'm sure he wasn't just being a dick about the question. Petrino on the other hand is a piece of shit who has no right to weigh in on anyone and should be really careful about opening his mouth. He's a total shitbag.

I have a suspicion that Harbaugh and Meyer respect each other as competitors. Meyer's answer was the classiest of the bunch.

Compare with the no comments and such from guys like Petrino and Malzahn. Harbaugh is in their heads. He's not in Meyer's head; he's just going to need to beat them straight up.

McElwain's response is priceless. He's actually twitching. Looks like Herbert Lom from the Pink Panther series.

Best comment of the thread.

On another note, I know that Harbaugh can be a bit of an odd duck, but sometimes I see the media just going NUTS and over-reacting to things that aren't really that crazy.  He tries to connect with the kids so he climbs a tree or does the dab.  He's very intense--what coach at that level isn't?

It's not like Harbaugh is eating glue sticks, wearing a bra on his head, and claiming that he's Joan of Arc.
