Jerald Robinson to stay on Offense

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4308313&name=Midwest_R...

A few interesting tidbits from ESPN Midwest Recruiting blogger:

1) Jerald Robinson has picked up quite a few offers since committing, but nothing for us to really sweat about.

2) "At first the Michigan coaches were talking about defense," Robinson said. "But after they saw me at their camp (in June) they said they want me to play wide receiver." I know several posters felt that he would be moved to the defensive side of the ball, but I guess that might just be put to rest.

Good post, it'll be interesting to see who we get to play safety, then. Recruiting gurus, who are we looking at besides Latwan Anderson to play safety? Safety and defensive tackle are my two biggest concerns for the future (it's always safety with Michigan).

For those wondering like I was, those other offers are "Michigan State, Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, Syracuse, Pitt, Cincinnati and a few others." That' a pretty good group. Someone else has mentioned that Ohio State was interested in him early in the process, too

Interesting catch-22 here. We're worried that we're recruiting players no one else good wants, then worried if they get those offers they might decommit. Talk about never being able to be happy.

I'm not directing this at you WTB, just noting the slight cognitive dissonance here.

I wondered why people thought JRob would play S at UM, then I saw his defensive stats in that article: 7 picks is pretty darn good.

Still, considering that he averaged nearly 23 yards per catch with 7 TD's and the staff liked him at camp (I recall Sam Webb waxing poetic about JRob's camp performance as well) I am pretty excited about his potential at SE.

Apparently at camp this year, according to Sam Webb, Robinson was dominant at wide receiver. Sam Webb also stated that he made Cullen Christian, the #3 CB recruit in the nation, look silly more often than not. Webb has stated a few times that he thinks Robinson is most likely a better receiving prospect than (gasp) Ricardo Miller. He stays on offense for sure.

As for M. Rob, yes he is one of the best safeties in the nation, but the staff is looking at him with OLB in mind. We will see when he gets on campus, but either way he is such a freak athlete that having the luxury to decide where he plays is not the worst thing in the world.

Yeah, I agree. Just like you probably wouldn't want your QB spending part of his time mentally preparing to play cornerback, you probably don't want your safety taking reps at WR or RB. That's probably one of the big reasons. I was just trying to think of whether it's happened recently or not.

but Urlacher played a S/LB hybrid and also spent some time at WR/FB and kick returner while at New Mexico. Thats all i got off the top of my head.

It just seems like other teams have good safeties, but yet when we try to recruit safeties, they turn into linebackers. How does this keep happening?

We recruit large safeties, for some reason. Other teams recruit CBs to play safety. We recruit safeties to play safety...and they end up at LB.

osu has had some pretty darn good safeties. Maybe we should just see who they recruit and try to go after those guys. Worked with Vlad so far, definitely heard some positive things about him. It'd be nice to watch a game and not cringe everytime I see a pass 15 yards downfield right in the middle.

So, you're saying there's a chance that Troy Woolfolk will be a good safety?

I'm not sure about Woolfolk. I think he could be serviceable, but not a star. He's never done anything that makes me think he'll suck.

But Carr's staff didn't bring him in to be a safety. They brought him in to be a corner, and Rodriguez switched him. Other staffs look at a high school cornerback and say, "He'd make a good safety."

RichRod's coaching staff put Ryan Munday in the NFL as a draft pick. Whether or not Woolfolk can hack it, think about that previous sentence.

Not directed at you Magnus, just noting this for everyone.

That's why I'm still giving our DB coaches a pass for the time being even after last year's not good play. I thought Mundy was forever a lost cause and somehow Rich Rod's staff made him a functional defensive player.
