Jake Rudock Transferring, Michigan An Option
There's been a lot of chatter about this from the Iowa side of things, but this is the first time I've seen anyone Report it:
QB Jake Rudock, who started 2 yrs at #Iowa, is transferring. He will visit #Michigan next wk,source told @FOXSports. As a grad, is elig. now
— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) March 11, 2015
Rudock was yanked around late last year as Iowa debated going with CJ Beathard, then eventually tried him. A typical post-game quote from Rudock last year:
"I wish I didn't throw a pick in the red zone," the Iowa quarterback said after a 37-34 loss in overtime.
/pulls collar
Rudock was hardly alone as a struggling member of Iowa's offense under Greg Davis, though. And… like… despite being thoroughly benched late, Rudock was the third-most efficient passer in the Big Ten(!) last year. I need that youtube clip of me losing my mind over some BIG TEN(!) fact right now, because that is a very very BIG TEN(!) fact.
But I mean, there it is: 60% completions, 11:3 TD-INT, 7.6 YPA. Numbers that look amazing next to Devin Gardner's 60%, 5:9, 6.3, let alone Shane Morris's career numbers. While being coached by a guy who is a bit less good at football coaching than Jim Harbaugh is. And he's available for deployment this fall. As a no-downside grad transfer. I'll take it.
I've heard that Michigan is indeed Rudock's desired destination. Unless Harbaugh tries to play catch with him, it's probably happening.

Benny Hill was probably 20 years ahead of his time for conservative U.S. audiences - he was in the right country though; the British audience could take his "racy" stuff in an earlier era. And I bet there are a lot of gifs from his shows that Google Adsense would get mad at Brian about as well.
But yeah the average dude under 30 won't know who he is I assume.

Does the Big10 transfer rule (about not accepting scholarships if you transfer within the conference) not apply to grad transfers? Or would he be paying his own way this year? And if he is paying his own way, does that mean he doesn't count against the scholarship counts?
I have a lot of questions about this, apparently.

Now, there's the understatement of the decade.

Rudock is nothing special but again it is all relative. The Big 10 was horrid with Qb play last year with Hackenberg and Devin falling far short of expectations. Hack obviously had a 2013 UM type OL and Devin...well regressed. Gary Nova was the 3rd best QB in many measures (probably not efficiency but in a lot of other measures) in a piece I did in November - which tells you what you need to know. Basically it was "any human from OSU", Connor Cook, and Welp for this conference.
While Hogan is the better player beggers can't be choosers and for a 1 year stop gap he would be very welcome as a game manager type who has tons of experiennce and while can't throw with the velocity / distance of Morris can throw with accuracy which is what matters if you have to choose between the 2 skill sets. The low INT rate is also pleasing. He will bring a level of comfort - won't wow us but in year 1 of a Harbaugh run based offense it's a solid solution to what seems like a mess right now.
March 11th, 2015 at 11:19 AM ^
Agree. I think a 16 TD and 5 INT QB could get this team to 10 wins this year. I also think Harbaugh is in a "win now" mentality. If that means bringing in a one and done guy to get there, so be it.
March 11th, 2015 at 11:27 AM ^
Just reading between the lines for 2 years about what they say about Shane I just dont think he will ever start for UM. He seems to lack the things Devin did in reading defenses and accuracy, although Devin had the legs to offset that and in a different era with a different OL I think his destiny would have been different. With Shane you read a lot of things over time that add up to a guy who is not anywhere near the rating. It is what it is, if true.
On the other thread I hear about "upsetting Shane" and "retarding development" of other QBs and I am like what? Not upsetting Shane is what got us to this stage - Hoke didnt get a 2012 QB to appease him apparently. And how do other teams have SR starters that dont "retard development" of their true and RS freshmen?
This is a perfect get and gives us a known quantity. If he throws 7 INTs this year vs the 14-18 a first year starter will probably throw that's 2-3 wins right there. UM was horrid in one of the most important stats in football - turnover margin. Both the offense and defense's fault - this will help fix the issue for the offense and hopefully Durkin can help fix the issue with the defense in that regard.
It's a 1 year rental and we can consider it the 2012 QB we never recruited if he came. He won't make anyone's heart flutter but after years of "excitement" out of the QB position, a year of boring would be fine by me until Harbaugh gets his real horses in the game down the road.

It's the Tom Brady situation all over again. For all the bluster about "QB competition", Devin Gardner's job was never in danger and Shane was always heir apparent. Now he finally faces real competition. And that's not a bad thing.
Shane has to decide who Shane is. Shane can be the next Tom Brady, having an epiphany by the threat of losing the job and going nuts with prep. Or he can give up and get out of town. This isn't a knock on him, or doubting him, or picking on him. It's just to say that Harbaugh is creating the best environment to push Shane to the limit of his talent, but the rest is up to Shane.
March 11th, 2015 at 11:45 AM ^
I think Harbaugh is solving the QB situation with volume, and that's it. He knows from experience that many don't pan out. A 16:5 QB is nice but if he sets foot on this campus he'll be just another QB until Harbaugh decides otherwise.
That's not really disagreeing with you though. He'd have a head start in winning the job. What I actually disagree on is Harbaugh's "win now" mentality. Early reports are that he's completely dismantling the previous system, all the way down to letting players try out for other positions. When the dust settles I think the pieces won't move nearly as much as format would allow, but the extent of the project is such that I think he's willing to lose a few games early if it means sustained success down the road.
Which isn't to say he's giving up on any particular game; note Stanford's upset of USC his first year. But contrast his style to Borges, who basically treated the spread offense he inherited like a leaky boat until he ran out of duct tape.
I also think Harbaugh is in a "win now" mentality.
I think Harbaugh is in a "win always" mentality.
See: Tag, laser-powered variations on.

he'll be the only guy on our team so far who has actually shown some level of success being a Big Ten QB. Everyone else is just hope.

was at a UM Club lunch with Sam & Ira yesterday, on this topic, there is a Big Ten rule that you lose a year of eligibility transferring WITHIN THE CONFERENCE.
So, as of now, there is no answer whether that applies to grad school transfers.
Though, if he has an Iowa degree, he is not really transferring.
There is no NCAA bar to him playing immediately for us.
Except that it's not really a "transfer" when it comes to grad school, right? You''ve gotten your degree, you graduate, you select another institution for graduate school. You wouldn't say that you graduated from Michigan with a B.A. and then transferred to Duke for law school.

But at some point, when our 85 man roster is 5 to 10 percent QBs, I have to wonder if we're stockpiling too many. (I suppose we should probably expect a transfer or two at the end of this season from those who don't earn a spot in the 2 deep.)

Rudock would be gone in a year, so it's not like he matters much to that total. If it's the difference between bringing him it and awarding a leftover scholarship to a walk-on, it seems like a no-brainer.

I'm in.
I want this guy, because even if he never plays a down we can probably redshirt one or two more Frosh QBs.
March 11th, 2015 at 11:40 AM ^
him become the dominant QB in the conference just to stick it to the haters. That would be awesome. In the meantime, a known quantity, a decent QB, experienced. What's not to like?
March 11th, 2015 at 11:53 AM ^
DG was experienced when he was thrown into Nuss' scheme and that was a disaster.
So, I'm not putting much stock in his game experience. Nor do I think Harbaugh puts much value in it. He just needs bodies at QB to sort out. The one who can execute (ugh) the scheme will win out. At the very least, this guy puts added pressure on the others, and that's fine by me.
Calling Gardner "experienced" minimizes how jacked around that poor guy was:
Year 0: QB (medical redshirt) for RichRod
Year 1: QB for Borges
Year 2: Wide receiver then QB for Borges
Year 3: QB for Borges
Year 4: QB for Nussmeier
He never had two full seasons in a row in the same role for the same offensive coordinator at Michigan. The fact that he was functional at all is a testament to his adaptability.
March 11th, 2015 at 11:52 AM ^
it will be interesting to see what Harbaugh does with Shane. Does he play backup? If he needs more time to assimilate the system, would Harbaugh even consider a redshirt, and have him poised to compete in a year with a fuller knowledge of what Harbaugh needs a QB to do? Would Speight or Malzone show enough to be the backup this year and allow the redshirt? Or is it just too late to even consider this? Given the hype and how Morris was screwed by events (HS senior year lost to mono, no redshirt, thrown to the wolves), is there enough raw talent there to take a step back and see if you can get two good years from him after 2015? Or is he just a guy with a great arm who lacks some of the other things you need in a QB?
I would give Speight the garbage time snaps and redshirt Morris unless Rudock gets hurt. He was not ready to contribute at the end of last season. Maybe with an extra year in the program, he'll be able to contribute in 2016 and 2017.
Now if Rudock gets hurt, the best available guy should play even if it means burning a redshirt.
