Iowa 14, Michigan 13 Comment Count

Ace

A Murphy's Law game.

Any number of individual plays could've changed the outcome. Most of the ones that come to mind involve Wilton Speight, who had his worst game of the year, then had injury added to insult at the end.

Speight wasn't alone in his struggles, however. Jehu Chesson missed a chance to bail his quarterback out, instead getting a third-down pass ripped from his hands by Manny Rugamba, costing the Wolverines a chance to put the game away. Khalid Hill missed an assignment that led to an early safety and lost a fumble returning the opening kickoff of the second half. Chris Evans was the only running back who could consistently get anything going. The playcalling, personnel usage, and late-game clock management will be nitpicked to death this week, and not without justification.

While the defense played well on the whole, they couldn't contain Akrum Wadley, who accounted for 167 yards on 28 touches. And, yes, there were multiple questionable calls by the notorious officiating crew led by John O'Neill.

"Not every little thing is going to go our team's way," said Jim Harbaugh. "To win, you've got to make it go your way. We didn't."

Michigan still has everything to play for, but they've lost all margin for error if they want to keep their Big Ten title and playoff dreams alive. Before they even get that far, though, they have to figure out what went wrong tonight. This game should not have been close, let alone a loss, but a number of underwhelming performances occurred in conjunction at the wrong time. There's no sugarcoating tonight.

Guys, it's really hard to go undefeated in a season. LIke, really, really hard. Do you guys know how many times the almighty Nick Saban has gone undefeated at Bama?  Once. Once. Urban Meyer has lost at least one game every year at OSU except his first season (when they couldn't go to the postseason anyway).

Let's put it another way: Guess how many of the last ten national champions were undefeated. Would you believe it's three? We're talking about the best college football team in the country each year...and only three of the last 10 of those teams were undefeated after it was all said and done.

This is why the games are played. Not every game is going to go by the script of who's better than who on paper.

The team isn't garbage, and y'all are really starting to get on my nerves with the weak ass "OSU is going to pound us" shit. Everything seemed to go Iowa's way tonight, and yet they only won by a point. Michigan looked off all night...and yet were one first down away from escaping with the W. Shit happens. Move on. We'll find out who this team really is soon. But the loss tonight doesn't change anything. Yet.

What has bothered me, because they've been exposed even in the wins, are some key issues that don't appear to have been addressed successfully through the course of the season:

  • An OLine that cannot dominate
  • RBs that are not NFL caliber (unlike RBs from OSU, MSU, Iowa, PSU, who are)
  • LBs, not named Peppers, who look lost and usually fail to make key plays
  • An average QB with limited vision and decision-making skills

UofM is a good team, and much imporved over what we've seen during the previous 10 years, but they're not an elite team.

Unfortunately, in the Iowa game, all of these shortcomings seemed to be more pronounced at the same time.

Goes to CompleteLunacy for the complete sanity in that post.

If people can't stomach the occaisonal loss it's hard to see how they enjoy college football.

College football can and does go every which way.  I watched Auburn/Georgia yesterday to see if Auburn might be capable of taking down 'Bama - doubtful, but not impossible...meanwhile #2 team gives up 40 pts at home against Narduzzi's unranked Pitt... the next 2 weeks will be emotion charged and stuff will happen.

Gotta move on.

This game confirms something that I have been worried about since last year.

There are a stunning number of similarities between Jim Harbaugh and the coach that he succeeded.

Both had mirage first seasons that looked amazing at the end when really it was just extraordinary luck that prevented a team with talent from the previous coach having a lackluster season due to the current one. Brady had luck in games such as the Notre Dame home game and Harbaugh had tremendous luck not losing on the road to a shitty Minnesota and shitty Indiana team.

Really, in hindsight, if not for that extraordinary luck, Michigan would have went 7-5 last year. Not as stunning as our memory has revised it, huh? We got absolutely killed at home to Ohio State and got bailed out by playing an overrated Florida in our bowl game.

To start of this year, we had 7 home games and our only two road games were against teams who only reason any of them will have a B1G win this season is because they played each other earlier today. Sure, 9-0 and a #2 ranking in the AP poll looked impressive. Our recruiting class looked impressive. But it was all a fucking mirage. Like Hoke, we can beat nobodies at home, but once we go on the road, we absolutely suck. That's why Harbaugh almost lost  - and should have lost - to a bad Minnesota and Indiana teams last year.

Michigan has better talent than Iowa. We are a better team. But the coaches absolutely fucked this team and the fans over. Smith couldn't run the ball all night, yet he had most of the carries. Ty Isaac had 1 fucking carry all night. The pitch never worked, but we kept doing it. Jabrill hasn't had a dominate game at offense since Rutgers, yet we kept trying it (his faux Heisman campaign has done so much damage to this team). Speight couldn't hit a pass over 15 yards all game, yet we kept trying it. An absolute clusterfuck of a performance. Despite all of this, however, we actually had the ball with less than 2 minutes to go and the lead. It was at this point that Harbaugh decided to pull of his trick of the night and revert right back into Bo - who never won a national title and lost countless big games because instead of putting away a team when he had the lead, he would go ultra conservative and let them stick around long enough to win the game at the end.

This is how Michigan lost when we were undefeated in 1985 at Iowa. I have heard the anger in my dad's voice when he describes how Bo cost Michigan so many games. Same with Lloyd. Harbaugh was supposed to be different. But deep in our own territory, he runs the ball with Smith, runs the ball with Jabrill, and then has Speight throw the ball dozens of yards down the field on the sideline - a low percentage throw even when Speight doesn't suck - and we got three-and-out again. A line drive shitty punt by Allen and a phantom face mask and our supposed awesome defense collapsing later, and we fucking lost to Iowa. At least Iowa was the number one team in the country in 1985. This team was 5 and fucking 4. And yet Harbaugh couldn't beat them.

Just like with Hoke, Harbaugh can't coach on the road. He can't beat inferior teams on the road. Like Hoke, his first season and a half were completely fradulent based on luck. Now we will get killed at Ohio State and once again dissolve into irrelevance - except for being made fun of nationally.

Maybe Harbaugh should - you know - instead of calling into radio shows to talk about Spongebob and instead of going to baseball games and instead of buying gimmicky glasses and instead of going to political rallies, maybe he should prepare for the next fucking game.

We have a coach who would rather be a celebrity than a coach. And it bit us in the ass tonight and will again in two weeks (hell, we'll probably lose next week, too).

I can't believe I actually cared about this team. What a fucking joke.

I would say he has some valid points though it's way too early in Jim's tenure to draw these conclusions. I know the Harbaughs and they are fierce competitors. Jim doesn't like to lose and he'll try to turn things around. Heck, I think he's enabled many of these kids to play beyond their level of expectations. Still, I appreciate the concern of celebrity issue and while many of the great coaches shy away from it others do not. The bottom line is results and for that we'll just have to wait and see.

So much this. Harbaugh goes full Lloyd at the end of games. Hoping things may change when Harbaugh can recruit a better QB but I am not holding my breath.

Step away from the ledge. While most of your post is just emotional butt hurt, I do think the peppers situation needs to be looked at. Either get creative with his offensive plays or use him as a decoy. Teams know about him trying to hit the edge.

Harbaugh is a huge improvement in the last two joke coaches we had here. Yeah, he was way ahead of schedule by grooming Hoke players who could not play worth a shit in 2014, into B1G contenders and a possible playoff team. I'm excited that we control our own destiny to the B1G championship and playoffs. Even if OSU beats us it will still be a great year for Harbaugh, taking a team of Hoke recruits and transforming them into a damn good team. One bad game is not going to cause me to think anything less of Harbaugh. He is an excellent coach!  And I'm excited that he is our coach! I've finally enjoyed watching Michigan football again for the past two seasons.

I gave it 2-3 minutes and it appears to be just a song with no discernable theme. Unless that is a super-deep metaphor for our offensive gameplan...

I might have gone with Phil Collins

Just as i thought it was goin alright
I found out how wrong when i thought i was right
Its always the same its just a shame thats all

I'll try and look at it like this...

Even back in Bo's heyday, Michigan would forever lose a damn game like this with all sorts of weird shit....this was a littl too weird and a little too ugly but a small part of me is glad it's out of the way...

Well, I'm lying...but I am trying to find a possible silver lining.

This loss is mostlye on Harbaugh:

* Too much hype allowed to seep in gave team big heads.  Heisman talk etc. BS

* WAY too many trick plays and formations on offense disrupts the flow of the offense.  That is a fact.

* Defense lacks speed on the edge...killed them.  They also do not tackle well.

I hate to say it, but Michigan (and this goes back through the previous administration) has been a terrible road team. Consider last year, where we needed big late game comebacks to beat Minnesota and Indiana. Hoke basically didn't have a notable (not neutral site) road win his entire time here. I don't know what it is, but most of my painful memories of Michigan involve them in white.

Shut the fuck up. So sick of fans who think players and coaches from the past who wore the same uniforms have anything to do with what happens today just because they were both a part of your fan experience.

I'm so upset about this game. The lines both looked bad.
I had a bad feeling all week about this game. I always sensed that my old boss and old roommate at UM were bad luck for us. So out of the blue last week I get a call from my old boss. Then I have an exchange with my old roommate as he's a veteran. Oh and Playing at night on the road seemed like a bad situation.

Noticed McCray still taking some awful angles in this game. TFLs are great, but sometimes you've got to give up 5 yards, tip your cap, and live to play another down.

It seemed like one of those games where players were slightly off and it repeatedly led to poor results.  There were many times when things almost connected, but just didn't.

It's been a rough week in general.

Hopefully, things get better.

The offense wasn't clicking. The play calling was way too cute for 2 quarters. Speight picked a hell of a day to have his worst game (and appears to be injured now). Every deep ball was over or underthrown. The deep bombs were all 2-3 yards long.

The defense was gashed repeatedly on the ground and Don Brown got RPS'd at the worst possible moments by a complete failure of an OC. Speaking of OCs, holy shit what was that from Jed Fisch?

Just disappointing all around. At every single level there was more than enough failures to go around. OC/DC/Head coach/players. At least it's a team loss.

they weren't focused, and it showed. too many missed blocking assignments and tackles. In theory they can win out and make the playoff, but it's more likely that we'll get another Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl rematch with Florida.

I love the deep dive into the "fancystats" every week on the podcasts, and I understand how alluring and frequently useful they are. But I do find myself cringing sometimes at how Brian and Ace tend to dismiss the unquantifiable role emotion plays in football. A road game at your in-state rival that lives and dies only for the game against you should give you at least a little pause that they might overperform expectations. A night game at a historical Michigan graveyard (Kinnick) should give you pause and some concerns about a trap game after so many easy wins. The preview of Iowa on this week's MGoRadio was beyond dismissive, it dripped with contempt for the opponent's right to even be seen on the same field as Michigan.

Fancystats are great, but they have no idea what to do with emotional situations, so they ignore them or just do a rule-of-thumb "three points for being the home team."

It's the second time in less than a week that some very, very, very smart people (who I hoped to all hell were right) fall in love with advanced statistics and mathmatical modeling only to have their analysis shockingly upended by the power of human emotions and randomness. If you ever read "The Black Swan," you'll find many examples of quants falling in love with numbers and thinking they can predict the likelihood of a rare event. They can't. Unexpected results happen a lot more than most people expect, and fancystats are also fancy blinders that cause bias.

If you've ever played a down of organized tackle football in your life, you know emotion matters. A lot. So does a lucky bounce here and there. Put those together and it's hard to ever dimiss a road opponent's chances.

That's completely false and fatalistic. Is OSU an elite team? They lost to PSU! Is Clemson an elite team? They lost to fucking Pitt! This game turned in four plays. First, the TD over turn (correct call IMO). The tiniest of toe drags and it's a totally different ballgame. Second, the punt that pinned us deep in our own zone. Third, the series while pinned deep -- I liked the pass on 1st, but when it wasn't completed it MUST be sneak, sneak, punt. Letting Iowa tee off on a 3 yard deep hand off is terrible. Two points and the ball gives Iowa hope, and brings a crowd who was ready to quite down life. Lastly, Hill's fumble. Ok, up two, getting the ball ... Doh! I love Hill, but that really hurt. CFB proves every week that you cannot give an outmatched opponent hope, especially on the road at night. I don't care who you are (see OSU v PSU this year) if you don't close them out you WILL pay the price. But, to close them out you've got to execute, to hit that deep pass when it's wide open, to make that tackle, and to open that hole. We didn't. Not because we're not a good team, but because we just didn't take advantage of the plays that were there and let Iowa hang around and grow in confidence.

Agree with most of this but I don't know about this one:

I liked the pass on 1st, but when it wasn't completed it MUST be sneak, sneak, punt.
Have you ever actually seen something like that? QB sneaks on 2nd and 10 and 3rd and long? That's giving up the ball, just without surrendering two points. (And punting from your own endzone, given our situation, probably meant giving them the ball on our side of the 50.)

I don't know what else to say except that I am sad. I really thought this was going to be a special year for Michigan football and now, after this result, it feels like the team wasn't as good as I thought it was. Yes, everything is still in front of us. But a victory over Ohio St. feels like a pipe dream at this point. Speight couldn't hit a deep pass. Our lines (on both sides) got their asses kicked. And no one, among the calvalcade of experienced seniors that littler this roster, could make a big play to put the game away. Just a bummer performance. Not much else to say.
