Van Slyke and Woolfolk are out for the year, so no surprises there, and Ferrara was unlikely to contribute. We had a pretty good idea Carvin Johnson was going to be out for 3-6 weeks, so that's not a surprise, though he may be more valuable to the defense than his -4 in this week's UFR might indicate. Toussaint was a "maybe" earlier in the week, so hopefully he'll be back to get a few touches against UMass and Bowling Green before the Big Ten schedule gets going.
As for the two guys who are varying degrees of "maybe," this is a reversal from Rodriguez's statements earlier in the week. If either can go, they'd be good additions to the receiving corps, but there is enough depth at the position (at least with Odoms on the outside and maybe a couple more 2-TE sets) that they'll only go if they're really needed.

Nothing too crazy in there which is good.
Wish Van Slyke didn't go out for the year especially with Emilien gone.
Carvin Johnson didn't have a great game and I have to imagine Thomas Gordon will give us something similar at the very least.
Love to see Hemingway and Roundtree out there, but as you mentioned there is enough depth (Odoms, Stonum, Robinson, Jackson, Stokes) that it won't be a killer.
Toussaint gets a meh largely because Shaw and Smith looked great against UConn.

I agree that Thomas Gordon will at least give similar results that Carvin did. They are both unknowns. I don't think Thomas Gordon did anything horrible during the UConn game.

I don't know that I would go so far as to say the Smith and Shaw looked "great" against UConn. Their YPC averages were pretty "meh" even before the final drive.

All things bring equal, if Gordon brings the same thing as Johnson right now I'd like to see Johnson get a medical redshirt.

One wonders if Junior Hemmingway will ever be healthy.

I'm starting to have the same fears for Fitzie. I think he may be Minor/Brown 2.0.
September 10th, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
Because he's had 2 injuries ever, neither of which (so far) has taken longer than expected to heal?
September 9th, 2010 at 6:21 PM ^
Geez... Roundtree is a tough guy. Hope he plays (and plays well).

Hopefully we can have someone with hands catching the punts. i swear my butt never puckers as much as it does when we're returning a punt.
What about Josh Furman at DB/S? Haven't heard much about him? I'm assuming he's redshirting?

I really hope Fitz gets to play once big ten schedule starts... hard to imagine going up against a DL like Iowa's or Wisconsin with people like Vincent Smith IMO

Hemingway's ability to get injured is something to behold......or despise.

If a tree falls in the forest...it falls on Junior Hemingway who just happened to be camping that day.

It seems like Fitzgerald has a nagging injury. Always a little worrisome in the knee. These knees that feel good one day but in too much pain to play the next often need some kind of scope to clean them out and in the worst case scenario microfracture surgery. I hope it's a sprain or a bad bruise or something but after two games being ruled out I fear there might be something underlying going on here.

I think Stevie Y had it done, but way towards the end of his career. Football player on ice?

if the internets are to be believed. Reggie Bush, Darren Sharper, Marques Colston ... oh yeah, and some non-Saints as well. Kellen Winslow, for one.
Also, some older guys who never really recovered ... but then, they were older guys. But anyway, yeah, it looks like it's possible and you can come back from it.

The knee injury is a sprain, which is new as of last week(ish - maybe more like 2-3 weeks).
I think it's not anything to be worried about in the long-term... yet.

That makes sense. I remember hearing he was in and out of training camp with minor injuries. Maybe there's some other physical issues going on as well.

Hopefully Junior is able to play at some point this year.
September 9th, 2010 at 8:57 PM ^
I see he is out 3 - 6 weeks but does he just rest his knee or is there just PT involved to restrenghten the knee?
September 9th, 2010 at 10:46 PM ^
I think Roundtree is a pretty cool guy, eh coughs up blood and doesn't afraid of anything.
