[Ed. A- I couldn’t make it to Indiana this past weekend but luckily Ace and David were willing and able. David pulled out the kind of move you’d expect from a wily veteran and got my recorder on the table right in front of the mic, which matters a ton to me and none to you. But hey, here’s a post for you to read with words that were said, then recorded with excellent clarity, and finally transcribed with… hands? Yes, hands and typing and such.]

Can you talk about Karan Higdon today, especially on those big plays?

“Yeah, he was phenomenal. I don’t know how many yards he got after contact but they were tough yards, and had some plays that looked like they were going to be a tackle for loss or a one-yard gain or no gain that he found a way to get four or five out of. More than a few. Lot of yards—I think more than 200 in the game—and cracked the big one for us and didn’t get trapped behind the line thought, I don’t know, if at all, maybe a couple times. But yeah, big boost from Karan Higdon today.”

Defense had been on the field a lot and when they faced goal-to-go from the two and had two negative plays and couldn’t come up much bigger. Talk about how those guys dug down deep were able to dig down deep.

“Yeah, I really thought our whole team did. Put our best people on it, our players and out coaches, and asked them to find a way and knew that we were going to have to dig down deep to do it. The goal-line stand was a great opportunity for us to keep them out of the end zone and win the ball game and responded with the tackle for loss and the incompletion, interception, and the quarterback option run up the middle so it was a great four plays for us.”

Was there a point in the game when you realized that Karan was going to be the guy to carry you through on offense or was that always the plan going in?

“Yeah, I mean, Karan started the game and we leaned on him heavy. I thought Chris [Evans] and Ty [Isaac] both added some good plays there. Nice to see Kareem Walker get a shot and produce; might be more carries for him in the future. We’ve got a long way to go. We’re very humble about this, and we’ll move on to a big road game next week, but this was a big game for our team. And mistakes were made but I think it’s something we can really grow from.”

[After THE JUMP: “We were grinding some meat out there today” is a way better phrase than “It was tough sledding”]

Can you talk about the level to which Lavert Hill elevated his game and his play today.

“It’s been pretty high all season. It really has. Lavert’s been a really good player for us; I was gonna say ‘steady’ but he’s been better than steady. He’s been playing at a really high level. Had some great defenses on the ball, pass breakups and interceptions and tight coverage. Really good, really good. That’s why we brought him here!”

And then the punt from Brad [Robbins], had you asked him to kick away from him on that last one or did you just decide to take a chance there?

“No, he was supposed to kick it to the opposite boundary that he did. Wound up in the middle of the field. You could see they had a wall set up. From my view, looked like he kicked the laces, too, which… there’s a lot of young guys out there and he’s one of them, and he’s doing a phenomenal job and the other guys are doing a phenomenal job.

“I mean, Donovan [Peoples-Jones] had some punt returns that… they’re close, you know. But he came through as well and is somebody that if you look up and down the roster, Aubrey Solomon and Michael Dwumfour getting in there when it was crunch time and doing a heck of a job and many others. Guys like Rashan and Chase Winovich and Mike McCray and Lavert, who’s really young too, those guys have been really steady. Playing with great effort. I think that’s where it all starts. You’re seeing that the effort is really there, and it was last week. There’s mistakes made and we’ve just got to grow from them and get them corrected.

“Knew what we were in for today. We really did. We knew we were in for a football fight; last time we were in here went to double overtime, this time it goes to overtime. Indiana’s got a veteran ball club and played very well, as they always do.”

Sixteen penalties today, some were costly. How concerning is that?

“Yeah, those are some of the things we’ve got to grow. We’ve got to grow and improve on. Just keep coaching it, just keep talking about it and learning from it. Been around young ball clubs before and that’s—it’s a process, and that’s one. We’ve got to become a more disciplined football team. We know it, we see it, we’re coaching it, we’re talking about it, and we’re going to keep taking strides. But when guys dig down, you feel like you’ve got a heck of a chance.”

Do you feel like that’s the way this team is going to have to win games throught the year, scrap out close games, rather than last year putting up 40, 50 points a game given how young you are and learning on the go?

“Well, I mean, when you’re—no it doesn’t have to be that way. We can grow and we can learn and you know that you will. I mean, I put myself back when I was a true freshman or a sophomore, redshirt freshman, or even a sophomore, redshirt sophomore, a junior, practically a junior in school, wasn’t a finished product by any means. I don’t think I even could have gone out there as a true freshman like some of these guys are.

“They’ve got something special. If you can dig down, dig deep, and stay in the moment, not look for a soft shoulder to cry on or an excuse to be made while you’re in the moment then that’s something special.”

Yeah, I guess that’s what I was asking, that at this present time they’re going to need that and not be able to--

“We can grow. We can grow, Dan. And our best people will be on it. We’re putting our best people on it, Dan. Our players and our coaches and we’ll forge ahead.”

What did you see from John this week in practice and his demeanor in the game today. Guessing he wasn’t maybe where you’d like him to be. What did you see from John overall?

“Well, I mean, we’ll have to really look at it, really look at the tape before I go into comment on that on how much was there. He had some opportunities, not a lot. We were grinding some meat out there today. It wasn’t the plan to throw it 25 times or 30 times or 20 times. But had some opportunities. Made some plays. Pulled off a Houdini play and overthrew an open go route to Donovan. Just got to look at it before I say anything.”

You’ve talked a little bit about the callous building. All these guys are young; is this a callous game?

“It’s a process. It’s a good one, though. They like being around each other, I can tell you that. They like practicing hard and they like playing hard. They like leaving it all out there on the field. Those are really good things to have, so we’ll keep forging on.”

You put Juwann Bushell-Beatty in at right tackle. What does he do to the chemistry of the offensive line?

“Again, got to look at the tape, really. Must have been good when we rushed the ball for as many yards as we did today. We’ll look. Had to be some really good play up front. So… good. They fight. I’ll tell you what they do: they fight. You really love that when you have a ball club that’s like that.”

I usually agree with most of Brian's analysis but i recall reading the season preview and thinking that he was WAY under-valuing the impact of losing senior receivers like Darboh and Chessen and replacing them with true freshmen and sophomores. Plugging in a 4 or even 5 star recruit looks great on paper, but until that 4-5* kid learns how the play the game - a process that takes a few years, especially at receiver - he isn't going to anything approaching an upgrade. This is the reason that a school like Wisconsin is steady and pretty good year after year after year. While they don't recruit the talent to hang with the like of Bama, OSU or Clemson, they are consistently top 15 and competing for division titles because they are able to redshirt their players, let them develop and generally field teams consisting largely of upper class men. The importance of this can't be overstated and appears to be lost on a huge portion of our fan base.

Lets look at heisman runners and which year of recruiting forms the core of a successful team in 2017

Top six

Saquon Barkley RB Penn State Jr. 9 2 1 0 0 56
Bryce Love RB Stanford Jr. 3 8 1 0 0 50
Baker Mayfield QB Oklahoma Sr. 0 1 7 4 0 33
Luke Falk QB Washington State Sr. 0 1 1 4 2 17
Rashaad Penny RB San Diego State Sr. 0 0 2 1 7 15
Lamar Jackson QB Louisville Jr. 0 0 0 1 0 2

The same for O line, receivers etc etc.

Yea. 2015 recruits.

How was M's 2015 class again?

....dies inside.

To me, what is most upsetting about all of this is that based upon this analysis, while next year should be better, it will still not be great.  We will still be really young.  Our top receivers project to be the massive haul from this year (which will be a combination of redshirt freshmen and true sophs) and grant perry.  That's still super young.  On the OL, we are still going to be very young, as well (and not all that deep).  Our only positions at which we will have some upperclassmen in key roles will be RB (Higdon will be a true junior, as will Evans) and TE (Gentry, TW JR., Eubanks and the rest will be upperclassmen).  It's better than this year, but far from ideal.  To me, the biggest question is will we have Wilton Speight (a senior, with a ton of experience, who has shown the ability to play smart and well), a Junior Peters (who knows - tons of sprint hype, but apparently not even close to ready and almost zero game experience) or a redshirt freshman D.McCaffrey (potential for miles, but freshmen QBs scare me).

JT Barret would be gone after 10 years at OSU.

Barkley is gone.

I am more upset about MSU than any other team. PSU got generational RB Which is their offense and opens up their pass to Gesekie etc. OSU. Loaded. MSU? How are they this "good" even if lucky. Annoying^max

I really think we are seeing seeds of good OL development finally, specially if we repeat runnign performance this weekend. I think we turn a corner.

often 4 and 5 stars in football leave early. Imagine if everyone stayed that could from last year.

Setting up a pro-style team requires players to develop football IQ. Right now we have have young players and an experienced group of coaches that are working on it. It is a rebuilding year and expectations need to be kept real.

Anyone that advocates Harbaugh leave is a troll, a fool, or both.

I have said it before and will say it again.  I see a coach who has a vision and is going to build this team the way he wants.  He has been given free reign to do so.  The Harbaugh train is rolling.  You can come along for the ride or get the hell off.

O line is rounding out to average+ and if we bust out 150 yards + ( I am pretty sre we will) against PSU then thats real progress. Something that coaches have worked hard on and have improved.

Do we really think passing O would not be improved? (may be by next year but improvement nonetheless?) Don't think so.

Future is bright. Keep getting better.

His more restrained sideline presence this year may lead some to speculate on broader meanings when maybe he's just being more careful.  Which is being smart.  That's a penalty he won't risk, and also doesn't provide camera fodder.  For the life of me I can' think of their coaches name... anyway when we scored, his meltdown was captured and replayed.

Odds are we are over matched this weekend but I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out.  We have been a favorite all season.   Sometimes it is way easier to be the underdog.  Pretty much all the media is going to talk all week how we are going to get rolled.  I hope these kids come out with a huge chip on their shoulders.  We will probably need a few wrinkles and a turnover or two but should be interesting if nothing else.

Why doesn't someone have the balls to ask JH about the poor QB play and their lack of progress?  JOK and WS are not "young guys"; they're  into their 3rd year with JH and we've not seen them "grow and improve".  What gives? Is it poor QB coaching?

MinWhisky

October 16th, 2017 at 11:17 AM ^

Coach, the QB play at UofM has been less than stellar this year.  We haven't seen JOK and WS "grow and improve".  They're not "young guys" and this is their 3rd season under this staff, so why haven't we seen them improve? And, how will this be addressed moving forward?  Will we see Brandon Peters and/or Dylan McCaffrey on the field this year so they have a chance to "grow and improve" before 2018 starts?

understand what you are getting at, but I think at this point most of the press realizes that they are not going to get an answer to that question.  Harbaugh answers what he wants, sometimes the "answer" to the question that he gives is not even related to the question that was asked.  So I think they are adaping and beginning to ask questions that they think he will give some feedback on so they have something to write.

Here's are some choices for how Harbaugh or just about any experienced coach would answer:

1.  Next question

2.  That's a terrible question and I'm not even going to respond.

3.  Well, MinWhisky, I disagree with your premise that our QBs haven't grown and impoved.  They have.  Are there errors? Sure, but not all of those are on the QB.  On an interception, for example, you are quick to blame the QB, but it could equally be a receiver not running the proper route.  But, as coaches, we watch these guys day in and day our in practice, and we watch and rewatch every single snap of the games over and over and let me tell you, these guys are improving every day.  JOK made some really good throws today and he also made a few that he would probably like to have back.  He also made some really great, smart reads.  And I see his confidence improving every day, and along with that, I expect big things from him.  Great guy.  Hard working guy.  Good work ethic.

our receivers vs their secondary. The running game should be productive if there are only 7 and occasionally 8in the box. TEs and WRs need to get open enough for relatively easy throws for JOK. Chewing up the clock and winning on field position will give the D a tight enough window to limit PSU scoring. If the D plays 40 min, then a win is hard to fathom.

His presser persona is basically a less-prickly Nick Saban (although sometimes he can be as prickly). None of these coaches want to tell the media anything.

The honeymoon is over with the fans and he knows it.

Third place in the Big Ten East is the best he can hope for (and this year it could be 4th place in the Big Ten East).

Soon as a juicy NFL offer hits, he's gone.

He always leaves. Always. Don't neg for me stating the truth, just move on.

to close out the game. Geezes, Go for plays that will produce that first down.

Even throw the bomb.  End these games by putting the DAGGER In. Not Hoping the opposition does not execute. How many times?  Why No question to this effect.

"Coach, with that last offensive possession when you ran Higdon three times, why didn't you go trips right and chuck it deep?  You know if the receiver comes down with it, you win the game".

Seriously man?!  I get what you're saying, but a "bomb"?  We threw against MSU in 2015 and Iowa last year and Darboh couldn't come with either.  Harbaugh took passing out of the offense when we were up 20-10 in the 4th qtr.  That was clear.  I'm not sure he was going to throw in OT either.

He has taken a verbal beating this week so I did want to point out something positive.  That 3rd down play where he escaped from what looked to be a sure sack and found DPJ in between 2 defenders for the completion was a helluva play.  Similar to the escape and throw to Grant Perry against Purdue.

Is it just me or it seems like all Michigan’s haters are afraid Jim Harbaugh will stay in Michigan for a long time? In general, they appear to be whishing he’ll go to the NFL. So much for confidence in their own team. Go Blue!

jamesjosephharbaugh

My interpretation: Harbaugh had a bit more spring in his step afternoon a win, but also felt like the game plan worked, players improved on the areas of focus, and maybe, just maybe he sees enough to build from that he might have a shot at PSU
