[Bill Rapai]

I can't do better describing the alternating waves of euphoria and loathing this hockey season imposes on the fan than this guy who asked a question on twitter:

I was feeling pretty Indiana as Michigan looked set to drop Sunday's game. Three minutes later I was feeling pretty Baylor as 3-5 turned into 6-5.

The scoreline is everything. If you're up this is one of the most electric Michigan offenses since Brendan Morrison. If you're down this is just another late Berenson team that waddles around wasting its talent with mind-bending defensive breakdowns. Last weekend was a high-amplitude sine wave oscillating from one state to the other.

In the aftermath of an okay weekend we can see that both things are true. Michigan's top line of Motte-Compher-Connor is putting up numbers Michigan hasn't seen since Red's hair was actually red. Connor (18-18-36) is second nationally in PPG. Compher (7-25-32) is fifth. Motte (18-10-28) is tied for thirteenth. Motte and Connor are tied for the national lead in goals per game. If this keeps up someone is going to have to dig through the history books to see where those guys stack up.

Meanwhile someone tweeted out that it was "incredible" that Steve Racine had only given up five goals, and was entirely correct.

That is one period! One period of hockey on skates and everything! Michigan skates five NHL draft picks on defense! Steve Racine has a .906 save percentage and he's kind of a hero!

Michigan was outshot 27-16 in that second period, fell behind by two goals, and proceeded to not allow Ohio State a shot until they had run off four consecutive goals in the first ten minutes of the third. So I dunno man.

So far they've managed to make it work, and as the season progresses their schedule looks less and less like an albatross. Each game Dartmouth wins both helps Michigan's tourney chances and slightly reframes how impressive Michigan's record is. With everything going right—about which more later—Michigan has a very good record against a reasonable schedule. Their RPI SOS is 20th and the rest of the season is split 50/50 between good teams and bad.

They're probably going to make it. Unless they don't. During the second intermission last night I was sure they weren't. I mean, anything can happen at any time. But they've built themselves a buffer here, and seem to be outracing their mistakes. Big Twelve Hockey is now a thing, and it lives in Ann Arbor.

Get in and anything can happen. This used to be a curse; now it feels like hope. Michigan switches between behemoth and bust multiple times a weekend. Indiana or Baylor? Ask again later.

Bullets

Why did that even happen? For all the rivalry stuff that gets tossed around, OSU games aren't unusually chippy most of the time. The 8-6 series finisher was exceptionally clean throughout, largely because everybody was too busy scoring to hit people. Then all hell breaks loose in the aftermath, including an ugly incident where Cutler Martin punched a defenseless guy on the ice in full view of the world:

I can't imagine Martin is going to be available for an important Penn State series after that. There was a bunch of other extracurriculars that might ensnare another player or two as well. All of it came seemingly out of nowhere.

I don't know what to make of the defense. When you're as bad as Michigan was this weekend it's not anything that is traceable to one player, or even the defense corps as a whole. Michigan has breakdowns all game every game from wingers, centers, and defensemen. I kind of thought things were getting fixed during the MSU series, but that was probably just MSU being very bad at hockey.

I do wish we'd held on to Andrew Copp. In retrospect Larkin was never going to stick around since he's an NHL all-star. Copp also went direct to the NHL but has 4 points in 41 games; his defensive abilities would be very welcome on this team.

OSU does not feel like a bad team. The contrast between OSU and MSU couldn't have been greater despite their similar records. Michigan spent half of the Friday game unable to get a clean zone exit because of the OSU forecheck. The Buckeyes are also super aggressive on penalty kills. They made a lot of mistakes in an attempt to control the game; contrast that with MSU's incredibly passive style. One of those styles has upside.

For big stretches of both games OSU took the game to Michigan; Michigan fought back and tilted the ice the other way after settling down and devising adjustments to what OSU was doing. The Buckeyes are very young this year; if they finish the year as strongly as they've played over the last month they could be a team to keep an eye on next year.

Man, Dan Dickerson is good. I'm not really a baseball person but I've heard bits and pieces of Tigers games for years because I'm often tuned to WTKA. Dickerson is their play by play guy, and while he's good it doesn't leap out at you because baseball is a slow, leisurely sport. Dickerson comes off as a very professional but standard baseball guy.

Hearing him do the games this weekend was a revelation. He was outstanding at a completely different variety of sport, one with a ton of things happening one after the other.

Here is a thought: Michigan needs a real play by play guy. Jim Brandstatter is a miscast color guy and I think everyone knows it; Michigan should add Dickerson to the booth. September might be tough but making it work would be good for everyone.

I thought Manny Legace was also good. He does the thing that goalies (in any sport) do where they focus a bit too much on the guy between the pipes, but he had a lot of interesting technical hockey things he related intelligibly.

Pairwise check

A shootout doesn't matter to the pairwise so Michigan gets a win and a tie out of the weekend. Michigan slides up to 7th in the rankings. I am pleasantly surprised by this. I thought it would be tough for Michigan to move up much unless they had good weekends against PSU and Minnesota.

Why is this less grim than I was projecting early in the season?

  • OSU won its tourney. Wins over BC and Cornell (8-0!) are inexplicable. They also give OSU a huge boost. Whereas before they were hanging out in MSU territory in RPI they're 38th now, ie, worth beating.
  • BU has done well. They're 12th in RPI, which give Michigan a quality win bump in addition to helping them out with SOS.
  • So has Dartmouth. They've won 5 of 6 and are just inside the top 20.
  • Robert Morris is beating up on Atlantic Hockey. They're 21st in RPI, just a hair away from the quality win bump, and should continue that—they have a +32 goal differential in conference.
  • The Big Ten is heavily stratified. Both PSU and Minnesota are in the top twenty while OSU, MSU, and Wisconsin cannot buy wins against the top of the league. This helps all three teams with at-large hopes thanks to QWB.

Everything that could go right for Michigan's RPI has over the past few weeks, which has moved Michigan off the bubble despite not having opponents who provide much traction.

Rooting interests remain obvious: for PSU and Minnesota and all of Michigan's nonconference opponents. You should double down on hating MSU—not that you have a problem with that—because they are so low in RPI that soon wins against them will not even count in Michigan's calculations, at which point MSU losses boost the rest of the Big Ten while not impacting M.

On the defense... eesh. There are times where it just looks like a tire fire in terms of giving up zone entries. If I had access to the data I would love to see Ohio State's percentage of carries into the zone vs dump ins, because it seems like the blue line was surrendered very easily this game. (I was in the end zone yesterday so harder to tell).

Backchecking forwards are essentially absent on this team and that's where Copp would have been great to retain, even if he wasn't that dynamic offensively. Compher might be ok, Motte has some speed to be a pest.... other than that it doesn't seem like they have guys that can lock down on defense. The middling-to-bad penalty kill stats are also symptoms of this issue. Racine isn't a bad goalie by any means and it's been great having him back since Nagelvoort struggled, but he's not getting the help he deserves.

I will say though...overall this team is a blast to watch. I don't know how many mini-van chants we've been able to do this year off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure we're past 5 now at home. It's hard to ever feel out of a game.

is awesome.  I have nothing against Mario Impemba, but I would much rather have him on FSD for the Tigers.  Furthermore, I believe Dan has broadcast some high school football in years past on FSD for the State Championship and he was on point with those as well.  I would very much support him doing Michigan Football.

I would gladly welcome a baseball guy like Dickerson to the booth for Michigan football play by play. I love Brandstatter but he's hard to follow sometimes.

Virginia Tech just replaced their long time PBP guy with John Laaser (previously the radio guy for Double A Richmond Spiders). Laaser has a baseball voice but comes across as very professional and tactful.  Baseball guys have an ability to say everything they need to without being wordy or getting caught up in their opinions.

Brandstatter doesn't do a very good job at painting the picture, ie. formation, personnel ewtc and then he doesn't describe the action as the play is occurring.

The other problem is simply his voice. Everything comes off in the same tone and there's not much variety in cadence.  He sounds breathless a lot of the time.

Dickerson or Ken Daniel on Red Wings are the best in town. Brandy on PBP was always a stopgap measure, and now that things "feel" like we will be relevant in football it is time to get a real professional PBP guy in the booth. Brandy's been great but at times I worry for his heart when he gets so worked up. Plenty of younger former players who would love that gig. Maybe even Brian Griese.

in regards to Brandy's PBP work, he's still pretty damn good as a color man.  But do we have room in the booth for co-color men (assuming neither Brandy nor Dierdorf is ready yet to retire)?

Dan Dickerson would be a wonderful replacement as the PBP guy.  He's got a great delivery regardless of the sport he's broadcasting and is a real professional.  And yet he's enough of a "homer" that I think nearly everyone would be satisfied if he took over.

Equally likely to score a bajillion points a game and rack up huge fantasy points, but not sure if we're truly elite (Baylor) or just a team who looks good but isn't in that upper echelon (Wazzu).

Dan Dickerson did some play by play for Michigan football early in 1997. That was when Frank Beckmann was finishing up a season for the Tigers. Dickerson has some good excited calls of both the Colorado and Notre Dame games that year. Beckmann didn't come back until the 37-0 drubbing of Indiana.

Is it Billy Powers? If this defense was average we'd be an elite team this year. The scoring is insane. I'm not too worried when we're down a couple of goals and have more than 5 minutes left on the clock.

Dickerson is terrific for the Tigers. I think he's actually underrated, even though he seems universally loved locally. One of the few guys I find it really worthwhile to mute the tv for. Doesn't surprise me that he does well in other sports. Brandy is in a tough spot. I think he has worked hard at PbP and has grown in it (the little that I've heard) but he's just not suited to the job. That's ok; some guys just aren't. I think Chris Fowler is just a guy in the booth, for example, despite being the best in the business as a host. Dickerson would be worth trying if he were available, but in practice he has a job that takes precedence and could theoretically occupy him for 2/3 of football season. This hockey weekend reminds me that at this time last year Michigan looked like they could take on the world. Then they got smoked at Minnesota (I took my daughter to that one, alas) and dropped games they should have won, and needed to win out at the Joe in front of hundreds of fans to go to the tourney. After this weekend, it kinda feels like the same team. But wow are the wins exciting to watch.

I know he loves Michigan, but he's pretty brutal. Radio play-by-play is much more difficult than TV. You have to pretty much paint the picture for people and speak very quickly, clearly, and have it all make sense. He was fine as a color guy but radio pbp takes true talent. If Michigan has a bad TV crew (like Pam Ward) I'll flip on the radio while watching the TV on mute. I like hearing the passion but it leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm surprised Dickerson hasn't gotten offers from the national networks (maybe he has and just isn't interested) he's that good. I would definitely put a call in if I'm UM, maybe he can work something out with the Tigers (long shot but why not). A 3 man booth was Dickerson on pbp and Brandy/Dierdorff would be amazing.

I am making $79/hour working from home. I never thought that it was legitimate but my best friend is earning $10 thousand a month by working online, that was really surprings for me, she recommended me to try it. You will lose nothing, just try it out on the following website. ►►►► www.pay-buzz.com

You brought up the Dickerson/Brandy thing.  Brandy is a good guy and a great ambassador for the program and school but meh at PbP.  For whatever reason I've found myself in places during a few big games recently where I have had to settle for the audio stream, and the PbP has definitely taken a downgrade of sorts.  Would love to see Dickerson in the booth.  I have liked the addition Dan Dierdorf has made though, so I'd hate to see him leave if Brandy went back to color.

"Jim Brandstatter is a miscast color guy and I think everyone knows it."  As shown by the comments to your post, it seems everyone actually does agree that Dickerson (or someone like him) would be a step, or two, up from Brandy.

However, considering how long it took them to replace Frank Beckmann (who was on the job, IMHO, at least 5 years too long), what are the chances Brandy will actually get replaced? Has anyone in the Athletic Dept actually voiced these sentiments, even in private? Or is it just fans, who don't actually have much of a say in these things?

I hope it happens. Heck, even make a 3-man booth, if you must, with Brandy and Dierdorf as color commenators. But Brandy is not in the right role and it shoud be fixed. U of M has too great a history to have had a mediocre radio broadcast for close to a decade now.

Dickerson is outstanding.  Ask any Tiger fan and they will rave about him for 10 minutes.  I would definitely take hiim in the Michigan football booth as long as he only misses a handful of Tigers games (Obviously Saturdays and maybe Sundays when either the Tigers or Wolverines are away for the weekend).  .

Regarding Brandstatter, I love the dude as a color guy, both for the Lions and back when Bechkmann was doing football, but he is struggling as PBP.  Do they do 3 person booths in radio?  I feel like Dickerson and Brandstatter have good chemistry, but its a problem to have 2 color annourcers and no pbp.

My glasses must be more blue-tinted than most others here, but when I watched the scrum after the game, I see Kearney move his head forward to shout something in Martin's face, and Cutler blasted him for it. Yeah, Kearney is under the ref at the time, and Martin is supposed to laugh it off in that case, but that was the literal askin' for it, so Cutler gave him what he asked for. A suspension but not so terribly cheap a shot, as I see it. Kearney was looking right at it, leaning up into it, actually, to deliver whatever expletives he had in mind to deliver. Hope they were worth the price. The one game suspension seems about right to me. Does anyone know if it's US under18, which I hope but doubt, or is PSU game one?

Dickerson does the Lions too, no? And I swear I heard him doing radio for one of nfl playoffs this weekend -- was our Lions PBP guy anyway, that I am sure. And that's Dickerson too, right?

with this statement:

There are two board posts where the punch and over all chippy play of the game was discussed.  Opinions ranged from "he deserved it" to "not cool".

if there is any way to make it work. As someone who grew up with Ernie Harwell, I feel blessed to also have had DD for PbP on the Tigers (even though their styles were/are very different). I have lived in a number of different places and also was an early adopter of satellite radio which has given me the chance on long car trips to listen to a wide variety of announcers over the years. Dan Dickerson is the best!
