AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PEOPLE OF EARTH

Citizens of the planet, I come before you today to make an announcement. That announcement is: I do not give a microdamn about the things 1) Rich Rodriguez or 2) Michigan alumni such as Desmond Howard have to say about Michigan and Rich Rodriguez, respectively.

My interest levels are declining into femtodamn levels. On message boards I now flip past entire threads in which the same tired debates are brought forth with the speed and determination I ignore threads about politics on the internet. Let that sink in. Yeah. That's right. I have as much interest in this topic as I do Herman Cain.

So I don't want to dedicate yet more time to a guy who was fired a year ago except to talk about the things that made his offense very effective and his defense very ineffective. Those things affect Michigan's fortunes on the field and are interesting examples of the ever-evolving college football metagame. Also interesting, if slightly depressing, is the pickle Rodriguez's last couple recruiting classes have left Michigan in, especially on both lines.

Talking about other aspects of Rich Rodriguez's tenure makes me want to claw at my face. But I will do this for you, like I will eat a lemon if Yuri Wright picks Colorado over Michigan. So here is a handy chart for you to follow.

--------------------

EVENT: Rich Rodriguez has said something.

1. Is it about Michigan? If yes, go to 2. If no, go to 3.

2. Is it really about Michigan or is it a paranoid delusion? If paranoid delusion, go to 3. If still about Michigan, go to 4.

3. Don't care.

4. Still don't care. However, this incident is further evidence that Rodriguez is deservedly bitter about his three year tenure at Michigan and impolitic about discussing it.

Yes, it is further evidence that Rodriguez's maturity level and ability to play "the game" are low. Yes, it reminds me how nice it is to have a guy like Brady Hoke, who says all the correct things in all the generic ways possible. Yes—

What? Where am I? Why am I upside down in some sort of river valley? Why is there a bridge above/below me?

Hmmm.

I was probably bungee jumping at the time in an effort to prevent the inevitable—this is the level of my dedication to you, reader—but this topic was still massively boring enough to result in nappy times. I apologize. I'm so, so happy to be talking about this, no, serious—

--------------------

EVENT: A program alum or Lloyd Carr has said something.

1. Is it about Rich Rodriguez? If yes, go to 2. If no, go to 3.

2. Is it really about Rich Rodriguez or is it more of a rapturous thing about Brady Hoke that sets the lack of support given during the Rodriguez tenure in stark relief? If rapturous thing, go to 3. If actually about Rodriguez, go to 4.

3. Yes, that is annoying but let's just suck it up because it's in the best interests of the program.

4. Yes, it is extremely disappointing that certain program alumni appear to be jerks. What can you do, though?

To take one example, when you're so dim and callous as to deride Rodriguez as "Cherry Coke"—probably meant "New Coke"—in front of 60-70 players who were recruited by Rodriguez, are the living embodiment of that change, and went 10-2 and reached the Sugar Bowl, well… that's hopeless. Anyone who would trash-talk Denard, even indirectly, is never going to Get It.

It's further evidence that several recent program alums' maturity levels are low. It reminds me of how nice it was to have Bo around. There's nothing to do about it but wait. Eventually the Rodriguez recruits will be out of the program and the Rodriguez years far enough in the—

Right, this again. Upside down in a river valley.

---------------------

If I can remain conscious long enough to respond to these things in the future, all future events will be filed "3" or "4". This, people of Earth, is my sacrifice for your well-being. Let it not be in vain. File these things 3 or 4 and live your lives without Rodriguez-Michigan-induced narcolepsy. You, too, can live—

Sincerely,
An upside-down Brian Cook who would greatly appreciate being reeled in now

PS. Many of you have passed out in front of your computers and are in danger of entering an infinite loop wherein you wake up, forget what you were reading, begin reading again, and fall asleep. In an effort to prevent the thousands of deaths that may result, here is an animated GIF of some levitating cats.

Hopefully this will catch the newly-awakened reader's eye sufficiently to prevent them from entering a fatal boredom loop.

Nothing good can come of it. We all have our disappointments from those three years. Some are legit, some are manufactured, some are fleeting, and some are deeply personal. But while jumping up and down on RichRod might seem cathartic, it isn't that simple.

You can laugh about how bad the defense was, but in doing so you belittle the blood and sweat of Brandon Graham and Ryan Van Bergen and Mike Martin. You can mock the slot ninjas, but it's tough to say that when there's a tough-as-nails Billy Goat sitting right next to you. And when you suggest that the last few years weren't "Michigan Football," in a room with the Dilithium-clad embodiment of Those Who Stay, it makes me really, really sad.

I wonder if the current team felt slighted by Howard's remarks.

On one hand, I certainly think they have a right to feel slighted. But I kind of think that being the good soldiers that they are, they have bought into the new coaching staff's belief in what Michigan football is. And if they have, they must realize that the last 3 years haven't been Michigan football, at least by the new (old) standards. I've read a lot of quotes from Roh, Martin, and RVB about how Michigan defense is all about excellence, etc. If they really believe this, I don't think they should feel slighted. Rather, they probably feel proud of their accomplishments.

This is all conjecture, mind you, but I have a little knowledge on the psychology of collegiate athletes, so it seems reasonable (to me anyways). Most likely, however, are mixed emotions about Howard's comments. Pride of being accepted as Michigan Men by the Michigan Men they sought to emulate, but a lingering sense of resentment towards the same Michigan Men for abandoning them during their time of need.

They say winning heals all wounds, and I hope that is the case here. Hopefully, the new and the old teams can all come together around the 132's success.

I think the "Michigan Man" and "Michigan Football" terms are sometimes misused or misunderstood. RR wasn't perfect, but I consider him a Michigan Man. He did some stupid things, but I think he put the athletes first and did his best. He acted honorably. The Mad Magicians played Michigan football, long before Bo and 3-yards. Michigan football isn't inconsistent with a Spread offense. Respecting RR and appreciating his efforts is in no way inconsistent with respecting Hoke and being immensely grateful for what he's done. I think that's one more thing Howard missed.

I don't think Howard (or anyone else, really) has a problem with Rodriguez's tactics. Sure, there are a few people that don't like the spread at all, but to put it plainly, they are stupid. I really don't think the spread is the issue here. I think, plainly and simply, that the losing is the issue. Going 15-22 (6-18 in B1G) is what got Rodriguez fired, and what got people to turn on him. Hoke has run the spread this year, and no one has complained. He's won.

As for the terms "Michigan Man" and "Michigan Football" being misused, I disagree, insofar as when we are talking about former players. They are the people who made those terms mean what they mean, and, if nothing else, they know what the words mean when talking amongst themselves. The rest of us are just outsiders trying to decipher some kind of jargon.

I think you are right when you say that respecting Rodriguez is not incompatible with respecting Hoke. I do think Rodriguez'z efforts should be commended. But in his business, effort means far less than results. And because he fell short in that department, I think you've gone too far in saying Howard (or anyone) should be "immensely grateful". Respectful, certainly; grateful, probably; immensely grateful, almost certainly not.

I know I'm kind of an asshole for talking about Rodriguez in a thread about a moratorium on discussions about him, but it seems apropos in light of Howard's comments and my fascination with what the players of the 132 must be feeling while we argue over "Michigan Man".

Hopefully moderators will show no mercy towards those that want to rehash old Rodriguez-related arguments... including me.

Though it's probably a good time to update the MGoBoard FAQ with this information, along with revised information regarding the new moderation system. ( bringing back the points system would accomplish the same thing... wishful thinking I know)

I think Rodriguez has changed the tide on the rivalry.  Hell people in Arizona are starting to believe him.  Never since 2010 I would have thought that.  Selling different Michigan road jerseys is a good start.

These comments go to the heart of what is dividing fans still about Michigan.  There have been lessons learned.  Bring on the Sugar Bowl.

Especially the hurt butts comment above.  I loves me some Elno.
