Hoke Statement On Morris Comment Count

For what it's worth:

“The safety of our student-athletes is always our top priority. We generally never discuss the specifics of a student-athlete's medical care, but Shane Morris was removed from yesterday's game against Minnesota after further aggravating an injury to his leg that he sustained earlier in the contest. He was evaluated by our experienced athletic trainers and team physicians, and we're confident proper medical decisions were made.

The University of Michigan has a distinguished group of Certified Athletic Trainers and team physicians who are responsible for determining whether or not a player is physically able to play. Our coaches have no influence or authority to make determinations if or when an injured player returns to competition. The health and welfare of our student-athletes is and will continue to be a top priority.”

From wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concussion

"Concussion may be caused by impact forces, in which the head strikes or is struck by something, or impulsive forces, in which the head moves without itself being subject to blunt trauma (for example, when the chest hits something and the head snaps forward).

At the minimum, the contact was at or just below Shane's chin, which immediately snapped his head backwards, and then his head hit the field hard again when he fell. These physical impacts are classic causes of concussions.

If Brandon forced the MMB to wear "I'm Thinking Arby's" hats and do a halftime tribute to Kraft, it would be 100 times more acceptable than this. This is insulting to everyone, and it was done with foresight and intention! I'm normally a fan of patience but this weekend is the final straw.

The lack of the word "concussion" in this statement is pretty telling. It seems there are three questions with corresponding answers that should influence what happens next. I hope they get asked in the pressed tomorrow, even though it's doubtful we'll get answers.

1) Was Shane given a concussion test or tests?

2) If so, when?

3) What were the results?

When considering Hoke's future, we shouldn't limit consideration to the team's performance and this incident. The Gibbons incident might be at least as troubling. Hoke might be able to make plausible excuses about non-disclosure on that because of legal reasons, but there is no legitimate excuse for his "family matter" explanation, which was clearly disingenuous, insulting to the alleged victim, and communicated an unacceptable insensitivity to the scourge of college sexual assault.

"Potential signs of concussion?
if any of the following signs are observed after a direct or indirect blow to the head, the athlete should stop participation, be evaluated by a medical profes- sional and should not be permitted to return to sport the same day if a concussion is suspected."

“The quality of our pizzas is always our top priority. We generally never discuss the specifics of the pizza-making process, but a pepperoni stuffed crust pizza was removed from the Ann Arbor franchise on Saturday after the cheese and pepperoni all kind of ran together and said pizza was hardly discernible as such. It was evaluated by our experienced minimum-wage pizza chefs as well a kid with braces, and we're confident proper culinary decisions were made.

The Domino’s pizza franchise has a distinguished group of Certified Pizza Makers and kids with braces who are responsible for determining whether or not a pizza is ready to be served. Our CEO has no influence or authority to make determinations if or when a pizza returns to the dining area. The quality and discernibility of our pepperoni stuffed crust pizzas is and will continue to be a top priority.”

Um, Shane almost passed out on the field... all the players were screaming to the coaches to pull him out.

This whole "did they really have an idea" nonsense is just that -- NONSENSE.

Your comments are not getting deleted because they are "questioning what happened," They are getting deleted because you guys spouting off about how they didn't know obviously have not taken twenty minutes out of your life to do some actual fucking research before spouting off on the board.

Let me help Hoke out here.  Here's what he SHOULD'VE said:

"First let me begin by apologizing to Shane and his family for what happened yesterday.  My job as a head coach begins and ends by protecting the health and well-being of my players and I failed in that mission yesterday.  While we didnt believe that Shane had a concussion we should've erred on the side of caution and not had him a play past the vicious, illegal hit he took to the head.  We are taking a long, hard look at our protocol and procedures regarding head injuries to ensure that there will be no future incidents such as occurred in yesterday's game.  I am grateful that Shane took no further hits to his head and believe strongly he will emerge from this situation a stronger and better player.  As will I as a coach."

If this was the actual reason why they pulled him, they would have done it three plays earlier, when it was clear that Morris' plant foot was destroyed, rendering him physically incapable of throwing a pass.

As angelique points out, Hoke doesnt even mention the word concussion, and Hoke, or whoever wrote this for him, completely missed the point.

Morris' "medical evaluation" lasted around 120 seconds, and probably less. He was on the sideline for a while while still having his fucking helmet on.

Can someone- anyone- please ask specifically if this was administered on the sideline. Does Hoke know it exists? If he says it was, logical follow up would be, how was it completed so fast?

than this statement.  But come on, does anyone really think Hoke wrote this?  Most likely a handful of lawyers and compliance officers drew this up, Hoke looked at it, basically said "ok" signed off on it, and then went back to what he was doing. . . The fort isn't going to do/say/infer/ anything that would suggest the slightest sense of impropriety but they are also not going to release anything that would suggest anything that would seem damning either.

Not that it really matters, but I'm surprised that not a lot of people are looking at blaming bellomy during all this.  The primary qb was injured, Gardner had to come out for a play, you mean to tell me he was literally a snap away from having to go into the game, and he couldn't even find the right helmet??? Seriously, he's been in the program for several years.  There is no excuse for him to be so disengaged.  But then again, I suppose that can fall on coaching too.

this whole thing is turning into a farce of a sham.

I know it's redundant to jump on the hate train, but are you fucking kidding me.  Do you actually expect the team physicians to usurp the coach's authority in taking out a player for medical examination WHILE the player is in the game on a running clock?  When a player OBVIOUSLY needs medical attention but is waving off sideline orders to come out of the game, it is ABSOLUTELY the coach's responsibility to take action.  It is beyond absurd to think a team physician would call a timeout, or rush onto the field to force a player to come out, I doubt that's even possible for a team physician to do.

Man, I've supported Hoke in giving him one more year to figure this out, even in the aftermath of the Utah game, but to abdicate yourself of responsibility when you CLEARLY made an act of gross negligence in front of hundreds of thousands of fans and millions of television viewers is beyond reprehensible.  The only thing Hoke could've done to possibly save a tiny bit of face in this tire fire would be to take full accountability and sincerely apologize to Shane Morris's family.  Instead he chose the complete opposite route.

Unbelievable.

How many thousands of football games have been played? How many times have you seen medical staff run out on the field while the clock is running and no player is on the ground? Not once in the history of the game has medical staff run out and stopped play without first beeing prompted by others.

And for some reason you think this falls on the medical staff?

They released a statement in Hoke's name with the phrase "Our coaches"? I'll tell you what happened: the lawyers wrote that shit for Brandon to release, and Brandon refused to put his name on the controversy so Hoke takes the heat. Brandon should fire whoever's responsible for the concussion protocol or for not following the concussion protocol or whatever happened. But this is just ridiculous. A canned statement written by lawyers to be released by an administrator, and Brandon makes Hoke put his name on it. Preposterous.

NB: I am ready for Hoke to go after that decision, too. The incompetent game management has become dangerous to student-athletes. But this statement was written for Brandon.
