Hoke Statement On Morris Comment Count

For what it's worth:

“The safety of our student-athletes is always our top priority. We generally never discuss the specifics of a student-athlete's medical care, but Shane Morris was removed from yesterday's game against Minnesota after further aggravating an injury to his leg that he sustained earlier in the contest. He was evaluated by our experienced athletic trainers and team physicians, and we're confident proper medical decisions were made.

The University of Michigan has a distinguished group of Certified Athletic Trainers and team physicians who are responsible for determining whether or not a player is physically able to play. Our coaches have no influence or authority to make determinations if or when an injured player returns to competition. The health and welfare of our student-athletes is and will continue to be a top priority.”

Attributed this statement to Hoke and Mr. Cook's previous post, he believes Hoke is an idiot. Yes, Mr. Cook should be at the press conference tomorrow to confirm the same.

Sweeping the issue under the rug always works...This is looking more like Penn State's administration more everyday. I cannot believe Michigan is now sweeping an apparent concussion under the rug.

I've been wondering why Shane continually had his head down after that hit. He didn't put his head down when he injured the ankle the first time. Then it dawned on me... He was most likely avoiding looking up to avoid the bright sunlight. Aversion to light is a major symptom of concussion, along with tearing up, as another fan pointed out Shane was crying coming off the field. This athletic department is a joke run by idiots.

I unfollowed michigan athletics on all my social media accounts. Everyone e should do the same and boycott football for the rest of the season

I honestly don't know why stuff like this gets posted anymore; the crowd has spoken, and no evidence or argument to the contrary will change that.  I do believe that the University's athletic and training staff dropped the ball here, but people looking to put all the blame on Hoke will never be happy with any spreading or (gasp) different interpretations.

I think I'm just going to stay away from this site for a bit.  I want Hoke gone, but I'm not going to join this lynchmob that wants to kicking him out with the faux moral highground that everyone is trying to grasp onto.  Hoke should be fired because the team is 2-3 and looks turrible in every loss; he's not a monster trying to destroy people's lives.

What evidence to the contrary?  All of the blame is being put on Hoke because he has said repeatedly that he is in charge.  Over and over he has told us that he is responsible for everything that goes on with the team.  On this point, he is almost 100% correct.  Outside of a kid doing something stupid while away from the team, he is responsible for everything.

I'm starting to get a kick out of seeing you get so worked up about this.  You must love acting better than people on the internet.  Especially funny that you called me sanctimonious while pointing out how I don't "get it" while you do.

That's not what people are saying. I don't think Hoke wants to intentionally ruin people's lives. The issue is that he seems to be either incompetent, negligent, or both. Hoke and Brandon should just resign tomorrow in a joint press conference this season be damned. At least we would have an excuse for what looks to be a sub .500 record this season. Minnesota is not good. As you know they completed ONE FUCKING PASS against SAN JOSE STATE. I don't mean to tell at you I'm just tired of this athletic department and want them to do something right for once.

don't leave BB, you're one of the standout writers here and many more people enjoy your weekly diary posts, you can tell by the comments.  You can't argue with a mob once mob mentality gets going; I got downvoted for simply questioning if the written procedure for concussions is clear, if the intent is clear, does the writing accomplish the purpose and if not, should it be amended?

Don't leave, BB.  Every day when I log in there are moments when I feel like quitting this blog and finding a new football home.  The difference is, no one would miss me, you would be missed. I could cancel my account and still read your posts!

Fuck you BrandOn.

This is the safety of a student, and they're bullshitting about it.

Like I said in the other thread, I'm not watching the game next week. I'm gonna watch Michigan Hockey, instead.

I cannot believe how soft people have gotten. Wanting to fire hoke cause he left Shane Morris in after a hit?

All football players play injured. You guys weren't complaining when Gardner played injured during Ohio State. They dude had no ribs left and a destroyed foot.

But all of a sudden Morris plays a lil hurt we have to "protect" him. Actually protecting him would be not playing this violent game. Gardner plays hurt he's a warrior. Morris plays hurt then Hoke is some maniacally evil being. Maybe a black dude being hurt just doesn't phase ya'll as much.

It hasn't hit the press or become part of public consciousness, but scientists have been doing research on traumatic brain injury and foresee a possible "concussion crisis."  It's a good thing this event didn't happen in the context of a larger debate about head injuries and player safety.

Then the dep't would really have a shitshow on its hands.

Head trauma and concussions are COMPLETELY different than musculoskeletal extremity injuries, YOU FUCKING IDIOT.

If one cannot bear sufficient weight on his planting leg then they are at FURTHER risk for injury. It's called the functional movement screen. Down 30-7, Morris should have been pulled for the high ankle as well. Gardner vs Ohio State was different, non one knew Gardner broke his toe. But you can tape and brace a toe with a stiff insert, not a high ankle. NFL players sit out with high ankles all the time if they can't bear weight. Idiot.

how many times did Gardner get wrecked last year and get up slow? no one was worried about doing concussion checks on Gardner after everytime he got his soul rattled by a LB on a free run. also, given a lot of the talk about Gardner's foot injury lately, your emphasis on musculoskeletal is kinda funny.

There's a different between a leg/foot injury and a head injury. With Gardner, he was obviously limping and in pain, but there was no real way to know if the foot was actually broken without x-rays, and as he could walk and wanted to play, they let him play. I'm sure someone was monitoring the swelling, but that's pretty much that.

With Morris, he was visibly shaken up after taking a shot to the head, and would've fallen to the ground if Braden hadn't held him up. This is in addition to his frequent blinking. This at least merits an evaluation for a possible concussion, but instead they let him stay in the game. If he'd just had a limp (which he had much earlier in the game), no one would have a problem with him staying in the game.

(pre note: ryebreadboy I appreciate the informative and substantive nature of your response compared to some of the other's i've gotten)

How do you guys know he had a concussion? Do you even know if he has one? These hits happen all the time and people stay in. He didn't seem delirious to me. He just seemed like he was in pain.

I understand the concern, I was concerned too. My only issue is that this level of outrage is way overblown. They took him out like 4 plays later. They might've thought he got the wind knocked out of him. I just think it's way too much outrage for such little information and even in the worse case it was a couple of plays. He seemed perfectly coherent to me. People act like he was woozy and spinning. He seemed there mentally, just limpin'.

It doesn't matter whether or not he has a concussion. He showed obvious signs of having one and should have been taken out of the game at that moment. He wasn't. It's Hoke's responsibility to protect his players and he didn't. Not only is his incompetence hindering the team's ability to play games, it's resulting in his players being put in harm's way. So yes, absolutely, he should no longer be affiliated with the university. It shouldn't even be controversial.

NCAA Bylaw 3.2.4.18:

"An active member institution shall have a concussion management plan for its student-athletes. The plan shall include, but is not limited to, A process that ensures a student-athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion shall be removed from athletics activities and evaluated by a medical staff member."

I assert that Shane Morris plainly exhibited signs and behaviors consistent with a concussion, was allowed to participate in two plays after doing so, in clear violation of the University concussion management plan.

Alton

That's the point.  I'm not a doctor, and neither are the people responsible for implementing that aspect of the University of Michigan Concussion Management Plan.  The people responsible are Brady Hoke and his colleagues on the bench and in the pressbox.  Not the medical staff, who may be available on the bench but don't really have the ability to communicate in real time with the coaches.  The University of Michigan Concussion Management Plan is meant for idiots like me and Mr. Hoke.

If you see somebody who needs support to stand up after a blow to the head, for example, that is a sign consistent with a concussion.  It is not proof of a concussion (that's for medical staff to decide), but it is proof that the University of Michigan Concussion Management Plan needs to be implemented, and an examination by a medical staff member must take place as the next step.

are committing suicide due to depression and constant headaches, and they are donating their brains to science so the concussion issue can be further studied. I don't hear any stories about former players committing suicide over broken bones. Bones heal. Brain damage can be a permanent, debillitating condition. That's why people are upset. Race has nothing to do with it.

JilesDauz

This is also my issue. The problem with playiers committing suicide is due to the repeated average hits they get over the course of a career. Not due to the 1 or 2 really bad hits they had in a couple of games. People in civilian life get pretty bad concussions but don't suffer from the same affect. People are saying they are outraged cause it 'seemed' like he had a concussion,  but those extra plays, even if he was hit again, would have had negligable affects on his long term career. It's the repeated hits, not the 1 bad one that's the issue.

On the contrary, playing on an injured ankle/leg could have possible life long impact on his quality of life. (9 years ago I started running on a bad hamstring too soon and I still feel pain when I drive sometimes).

I don't see how leaving him in does more damage towards his long term health. Whereas I think leaving him in with his ankle injury was more egregious because that could lead to further aggravation.
