Henne and the Dolphins

Something not discussed in the previous thread...

Going into the season, I thought even with Pennington in their stable, it might be in the Dolphin's long term interest to get Henne as much experience as possible...

Pennington had a pretty good regular season, but throughout the season, I kept thinking "sooner or later, the real Pennington is going to show up".

Would you have given Henne more priority, even if there were to be some bump in the road, with the idea that here is a rookie who's potential is still unknown (and might be very good) - or go with Pennington, who did great through the season, only to wash out yet again when it counted?

Pennington is a solid QB, who is blasted because he played in a tough NY media. He's not a star but he's better than Henne right now and he's got a few years in him still. It will be tough for Henne to beat him out in the next few seasons because Parcells doesn't like to rock the boat much at QB.

That Flacco guy isn't too bad either. Matt Ryan, even better. Obviously, they were both the exception to the rule. Depends on the situation. In the NFL, you generally play for the playoffs until mathematically eliminated. For the Lions, that starts with opening day.

I largely agree with your assessment of Pennington. However, Pennington has had more than his share of injury problems, which in my opinion has prevented him from living up to his potential. Assuming that both Henne and Pennington are on the Dolphins for the next two years together, I suspect Henne will get at least 2-3 games worth of playing time, possibly more if Pennington hurts his shoulder again.

Where's Charlie Bauman when you need him?

I have to say I don't follow the Dolphins too closely...At the beginning of the season I assumed that Henne would play some, but once you have a shot at the playoffs I don't think you can risk not putting your best foot forward every game.

This is what you do if you drafted an NFL rookie quarterback:

Check the back of his jersey. Does it say "Manning"?

Playing Henne over Penningtone probably would have lead to at least one loss and missing the playoffs. Dolphins had not been to the playoffs since about 1999 or 2000. Making the playoffs and winning the division was an important goal in their rebuilding process and it was important to revitalize their fan base. They have some responsiblity to the other players and the fans to try and win when they are playing comeptitive ball.

Over his career, Pennington, though lacking in arm strength, has gotten by with a very high completion percentage. Henne will do well to learn from him for a while.

While it won't be easy to beat him out, Pennington has a history of injury problems. So, Henne should eventually get a chance to hit the field. If Henne focuses on becoming a better QB, field experience will come on its own.

I am a huge Dolphins fan, and I can tell you we are all shocked (in a positive way, of course) that Pennington was so productive this year. I definately believed that Henne was going to step into the starting lineup at some point this season, but Pennington's main thing was that he never turned the ball over this season, allowing a team with a mediocre offense and an above-average defense to win games. This all obviously disappeared in the playoffs, but I am in favor of Pennington starting until he starts making mistakes which he generally avoided this year.

Yeah, but I mean, he had to throw against Ed Reed. That's just not fair. I'm not sure he collapsed in the playoffs. Matt Ryan got to play Atlanta. I think he's a solid QB, not amazing, but he's getting the job done. It's amazing what you can do with a good line. Something NY did not have before Pennington left. Lets remember NY brought in Damien Woody and Alan Faneca to beef up that line. Wasn't D'brickshaw hurt the year before too? (why do i care so much about Pennington. I think I'm just bored and rambling.)
