Hello: Shawn Conway

GBW is reporting Michigan has commit #3, and per Jim Stefani's Twitter feed, it's instate sleeper WR Shawn Conway.

Informative update coming later. Discuss amongst yourselves in the meantime, while you take a look at his highlight.

I think that we can all agree that any prospect's reported 40 time is fake in an absolute sense. What I mean is, no Conway doesn't run the 40 in 4.5 seconds. But, 40 times are still somewhat useful to try to figure out what prospects are faster than other prospects.

If we can assume (and it's a big assumption) that in general, all 40 times are approximately as fake as any other 40 time, then we can say that a prospect with a 4.5 40 is faster than one with a 4.6 40.

Thus, I think that 40 times can be useful not to tell us absolute speed but relative speed.

As for your earlier posts, yes, you're right that as a DI prospect he should be getting better separation and that does worry me somewhat. Hopefully he can improve on that in the 1.5 years that he has left in high school.

but 4.5 on this guy looks a little too faked. not necessarily "faked" but mistakes made due to human error(hand time, etc.) make it seem so. and ur assuming a little too much if ur gonna say their 40 times are faked the same way. say one coach stops time generally too early. another coach stops time generally too late. u can have the same kid run a 4.4 and a 4.6 compared to his actual 4.5. a 4.4 is a hell of a lot different than 4.6.

No caps, tons of comments on a recruiting topic and the occasional personal insult thrown in for good measure.

This fits EmO's M.O. to a tee.

And just so you know, MGoBlog isn't your average football blog. People come here to get away from the mindless, text message type garbage that's on MLive, CBS and other football blogs.

I'm pretty sure it's because Scout and Rivals are slowly trying to rank kids all the way down to 5th grade. So, since he hasn't cracked the Top 300 yet it means that he just wasn't showing the football dedication necessary while also learning how to do long division. The kids obviously need to get their priorities straight.

Michigan has 3 commits for 2011, one of which was just named to the first-team at the Army All-American combine. Our last recruiting class was around 12th nationally and 2nd best in the Big Ten. It included top talent like Devin Gardner, Demar Dorsey, Cullen Christian, Marvin Robinson, Austin White, and Jibreel Black. We have three top-100 receivers on the roster currently in Stonum, Stokes, and Gallon, two of which were recruited by Rich Rodriguez.

Conelius was offered early and commited early. He rose throughout his recruitment.

This kid was a Cass Tech body. He is not an unknown to the coaching staff.

Yes Michigan is not Texas, and we didn't go to a bowl game...again. The recruit needs a good firm look post signing and in context to the entire class.

take a sleeper now and see how he pans out in his senior year. obviously this kid has some great upside with the big frame, hands, and leaping ability. his intangibles: toughness, winning every jump ball possible are huge upside.ur not gonna find a guy late in the recruiting process who is a sleeper who still can pan out nicely.

Some of you worry way too much about stars on a HS junior. He is big athletic, and the coaches think highly of him, what's not too like. I don't give a rats ass what rivals and scout think.

I see some jump balls and fades in this kids future. Looks like he could be a good red zone reciever and he has a little bit of shiftyness. Its way too early to be beating the coaches up for sleepers lets wait this out.

Is he going to be a 1st round pick? Probably not. But with his height, jumping ability, toughness, and outstanding hands, he could play day one on 3rd downs and in the red zone even with his average wheels.

And there's no way one of the top recievers (i.e. Arnett) will shy away because of this commitment, he's not an obvious threat. You need at least two WR's in each class, this is a nice solid signing and we still have room for the five star.

Giddy up.

I can understand where everyone on this board is coming from and I can't decide which side I'm on yet

Side A: The coaches are the Pros at recruiting and obviously they know what's best for the future of Michigan football. They spend countless hours trying to find the best talent in the nation to come and play for the Wolverines. If they offered this kid and accepted his commitment, well obviously he must be good. From looking at the film he has great hands and is pretty good with the jump ball. He's still young and may have his coming out party during his Sr. year and we will see everyone offer him.

Side B: The University of Michigan is one of the most historic college football programs of all time. We should only be accepting commitments from the best recruits in the nation. We have a very limited number of spots this year and they should be reserved for the very best athletes in the nation. The coaches can't afford to be filling up valuable spaces so early in the game. Michigan shouldn't have a ton of 3 star talent and a few 4 star men.

Again, I'm torn between the two camps. I guess I just have to have faith in coach Rod.

Side B assumes that they know this kid is a 3-star talent (at best), which they don't, Especially from a 4 minute highlight video.

The coaches thought this kid was worthy of a committable offer (more rare than it seems at this point in the year, with the number of "offers" out there), so they obviously think he's good enough to play.

Looking forward to seeing him in person - I live about 1/4 mile from Seaholm. As Stephani mentions, the team has not been that good lately, but they play in the second division of OAA, which is a pretty good football conference. Conway had 11 catches for 217 yards and 3 touchdowns in 5 games last year.
