Hello: Roy Manning, LB Coach Comment Count

Roy Manning has broken news that Roy Manning is the Jerry Montgomery replacement guy on his twitter:

Let's check that most recent tweet.

Wow this cat on American Idol just killed it..

Excellent.

Manning's brief history as a position coach was covered in Friday's UV. He was a backup who emerged into as starting role as a senior, played well enough to get drafted late and have a brief practice-squad NFL career, and then turned to coaching. After a GA stop at Michigan, Manning headed to Cincinnati in the same capacity, got hired as defensive position coach the next year, was left behind when Butch Jones went to Tennessee, and was hired at Northern Illinois as a running backs coach.

Montgomery was the Beyonce of this staff and Manning seems to fill a similar role as the young energetic dude who does not love Hall and Oates. That goes double when a team wants to hire you to be the RB coach, which is usually where "guy who just recruits his ass off" goes on any staff. Triple when you have absolutely no history as a RB coach.

Note that Manning's coming in as an OLB coach. That indicates a bit of a shift from the previous setup with the three DL coaches. I presume this means Hoke will continue with the nose tackles, Mattison will take the SDEs and 3techs, and Manning will be in charge of both the SAMs and WDEs. That's more of an even distribution than before.

First of all, welcome back!

Currently, Fred Jackson is the point person for Detroit / Flint / Tri-Cities recruiting.  With Roy's Saginaw roots, does he take over the in-state role, and let Fred return to his previous Louisiana / Texas territory?  Michigan was shut out in 2013 south of the mason/dixon.

So he handles only the MIKE? No additional roles like ST or recruiting coord? Suspect more shuffling of responsibilities still to come. Good to have Roy back on staff and he will surely recruit like a machine. Congrats to him.

This is awesome. Energetic alum with SE Michigan ties. I hope this isn't taken the wrong way (no politics) but hiring a young, black coach was important. Our staff is fairly old and white. Mattison and Hoke are known as unbelievable recruiters but how much can they really relate to some of the kids we're after?

However, his youth and recent NFL playing experience are more unique to our staff. Besides, many of the top national recruiters are white because credibility isn't based on race with these "Millenials". It's encouraging to see Hoke hiring guys from a wide swath of backgrounds, ages, etc and hopefully Roy is more entrenched at UM than Jerry.

He was in my top two of who I thought would be a fantastic fit. I also kind of hoped perhaps Cato June with his NFL experience and currently being a HS head coach might be a strong option. Both young men who have played in the NFL. I would love to have either of them and I'm happy Roy is back in town.
