Michigan has hired former 49ers/UCLA offensive coordinator Michael Johnson in some capacity:

Michigan has all nine of their assistant coach spots filled so Johnson is an analyst until such time as the NCAA approves a tenth assistant coach, which is expected to happen in the near future. Sam issued a gut feeling that a guy matching Johnson's description would be coming in to help coach the WRs, which he's done on and off in the NFL.

Johnson's son, Michael Johnson Jr, happens to be 247's #1 dual-threat QB in the 2019 class. Johnson was until recently his son's coach. This is either good or bad for Michigan's chances with him depending on how this "individual associated with a prospect" legislation works out and what role Johnson actually fills.

If Johnson is the tenth assistant then Michigan can definitely recruit his son because the legislation only applies to non-coaching jobs. If he's a staffer, the legislation stipulates that you can't hire a guy for a two year period before the prospect's projected enrollment. Johnson Jr is more than two years from enrolling, so Michigan might be fine. There is some disagreement about this from our law-talking guy.

FWIW, Johnson was Jim Harbaugh's QB coach for a brief period when both were with the Chargers.

Gotta love the butthurt coming from all the other fan bases. They don't even care to see that the guy is an NFL vet and great coach.

As a law-talking guy myself, I would suggest that even if this hire went afoul of the proposed legislation, it wouldn't necessarily apply retroactively. Since they hired him before it takes effect, I think Michigan could be fine there. But that assumes the NCAA follows any semblance of logic in its decisions/rulemaking which we all know is not a safe assumption.

What does "recruiting" mean in this case? They can't stop the kid from going to the school where his dad works, and presumably they can't stop the dad from speaking to his own son. What if the kid solicites the coaches for more info on the school, are they barred from replying? I could see something like no OVs, but short of that it's going to be pretty tough to enforce something like this.

"But that assumes the NCAA follows any semblance of logic..."  I'll make the Toby Zeigler bet with you (i.e. right now, all the money in my pocket vs. all the money in your pocket) that the NCAA will find a way to make this retroactive.

Miami booster says he paid money to and threw "parties" for (that resembled Roman Bacchanalia, but I digress...) recruits, and the NCAA finds a way to botch the investigation.  SI publishes a how-to article from a self-described bag man (who does not identify his school or its conference, but the references to waffle houses are pretty suggestive), and SEC recruits flash wads of cash on Twitter shortly after committing, and the NCAA sees nothing to investigate.  Oregon pays big bucks for bogus "scouting reports" to a handler who is friends with a 5-star that signs with the Ducks, and the NCAA shrugs.

But, Jim Harbough hires the parents and former coaches of recruits (all of who are demonstrably excellent at their jobs, both prior to being hired and subsequently at Michigan), and oh my God, think of the children! [cynical laughter]

However, if you want to indulge in speculation about eleventy-dimension chess... Maybe this is a big fat distraction to draw the NCAA/SEC's attention away from what Coach Harbaugh is really pursuing.  Yeah the kid is an awesome (for a high school sophmore) dual threat QB. I don't see Harbough going in that direction, especially since even Urban Meyer is drifting away from spread to run offense.  No, I don't know what he's really after.  If it was obvious enough for a self-appointed loudmouth like me to figure out, then that's not it.  This idea is solipsistic as hell, but it amuses me in badlands of the off season.

Baumgardner said that because he's hired now, it would be over 2 years before his son enrolls, if he enrolls in the summer. That would mean the new rule doesn't apply.

It is funny that this has to be explained everytime there is any mention of spread concepts. It does seem that Harbaugh is exploring the idea of having some more mobile QB's in the future though. He is a smart enough coach to have noticed what a running threat from the QB spot does for a college offense, and he has some experience after making a run to the Super Bowl with Kaepernick. I like it.

It is funny. People hear "spread," and automatically assume we are going full on up-tempo spread option. What people fail to realize is that spread isn't really a type of offense. It's a formation type. You can run all types of offenses out of the spread formations. Us going to more of a spread doesn't mean we have to get dual-threat QBs. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning were tearing defenses apart in spread offenses and they're two of the most immobile QBs around. You can run a spread offense just as effectively with a Wilton Speight as you can with a Denard Robinson.

I think Harbaugh is always looking for QB's who are like he was - guys who can throw very accurately, are smart, and can also run for a first down when needed.   Mobility is a huge plus for a QB, especially at the college level.  Having a QB who can occasionally do a designed run or can take off on broken plays or when the receivers can't get open is a big advantage for the offense.

I really want to see UM take the NCAA to court over some of these rules if they pass. Seriously get into nefarious waters of employment law if the NCAA says a guy can't take a job for which he is qualified for because of who his son is.

I appreciate the anger and I agree the rule seems to be pretty stupid, especially in this case, but the parent/coach isn't so much being denied access to employment as much as his son is being denied access to a specific school. Would the father have legal standing to bring a case or would his son be the one who is legally harmed by the rule and would thus have standing? Would both have standing? MGoLawyers, any thoughts?

The combination of college and NFL pedigree with OC experience will further separate this staff in game management and recruiting. Great management approach: Drevno leaves for HC job in a yr, Pep has the OC wheel for 2 yrs before a HC job, then Johnson's turn, and so on - a rolling succession plan with some fierce competition amongst highly skilled guys to jump ahead in line. If his son chooses UM, that's a nice bonus.

So just watched Jr's highlight Hudl film and I feel like our chances with DTR just went way down. That was very impressive to my untrained eye.

coup, I take it as a strong indication that he's NOT stooping to the use of bagmen and other SEC-style recruiting techniques.  That this is actually a hire that makes objective sense is just frosting on the cake.

They make a post about how Jim hires a High school coach to get his son. 60% of the replies are from people saying how our coaching staff is made up of High school coaches now and how they yap about how great their staff is with NFL coaches.

A couple things , Michigan has One former high school coach  on our staff coaching a position group lurkers.  Greg, Jim, Pep, Brian, Drev, Zordich all coached or played in the NFL . Heck the younger Harbaugh was on the Ravens staff for a minute. They have One failed NFL  head coach who was run out of the NFL for being awful on their staff . Go ahead and compare Harbaugh's record vs Greg's and tell me who was "fired" . The new hire was garbage for the Eagles by the way guys... GMatt was 100x the coordinator that guy was in the NFL.

The other thing that makes me laugh about their fans is they say something like " After Harbaugh is 0-4 against  OSU  he will run back to the NFL"  I know their state doesnt know a good NFL team but the NFL is the best of the best. They arent going to take a coach who is not winning in College guys. Try harder please.
