Hello Jerald Robinson!

By TomVH — February 8th, 2009 at 11:35 PM — 83 comments

Jerald Robinson is a 2010 wide receiver, from Canton, Ohio. He has just informed me that he will be committing to the University of Michigan today. Robinson plays receiver in a spread offense very similar to Michigan's. Take a look at his highlight video, and the conversation we had.

TOM: So you’re committing to Michigan, what stood out the most?

JERALD: I always had a feel for Michigan. OSU was my top school at one point, but I realized that Michigan is about to be in a good stage. I like the fans, and the atmosphere was nice too. I went to a game, and it was a lot of fun. I got the offer from them, and I talked to my family about it, and they thought it would be a good idea.

TOM: What positions do you play right now?

JERALD: I play receiver and safety. I like receiver more, and that’s what the coaches are talking to me. I play the X receiver, so they want me there.

TOM: Have you talked to any Michigan commits, or players?

JERALD: I talked to Ricardo Miller today, he texted me. We had a conversation, and I wasn’t sure when I was going to commit. I talked to Justin Turner today too. Ricardo told me the atmosphere, and the fans are crazy. The coaches treat you real good, and that made a good impression on me.

TOM: Did you just want to get your recruitment out of the way, or is this more of you’re committed, and see what happens?

JERALD: In some other peoples point of view they might want to look around, but I’m just committing. There are no other schools I’m going to be looking at. My recruitment is done after this, and I just can’t wait to be a Wolverine.

TOM: Are there any other recruits in your class you talk to?

JERALD: I talked to Jewone Snow, he’s offered by Michigan State already. I talk to Jamel Turner, but that’s it really.

TOM: What camps and combines will you be going to this summer?

JERALD: I’m going to the Michigan camp for sure, but I’m not sure about any other combines. There’s no reason to go to any really.

TOM: What are you most excited about for college, and Michigan?

JERALD: I’m excited to meet new people, and to be out of the state of Ohio. I want to get out of Ohio and experience new things. Justin Turner told me that you meet a whole different family, and you can start a new life. That’s what I think I need.

TOM: Where are you ranked with the recruiting services, and the coaches?

JERALD: I know I’m in the Rivals 250 to watch. But the coaches, just Michigan has offered, but everyone else was talking about spring offers. Coach Rodriguez told me once he started watching my film; he wanted me to pick Michigan. He offered on the spot. We run the spread too, so I fit into what he does.

Wow

If we land Jeremy, Ricardo, and this kid all in one year that is amazing WR depth.

OK, our WR class in 2010 is officially completely SICK. Love it.

Also, this:

Cool...

WR spots in 2010 is looking great. Not to sound negative but It'll be interesting to see if this kid really decides NOT to look at other schools.

Nothing like completely

Nothing like completely eliminating having to recruit one major position before recruiting even really begins for '10. Can't beat that!

WOOO! This means RR can focus

WOOO! This means RR can focus entirely on other positions now (cough LB, LB, LB).

HOWEVA, I almost hate to see 3 guys commit this early. I can see the temptation to decommit and take officials once they hear about all their friends' cross country trips.

!!!!

This is an awesome pick up. I've heard good things about this guy.

It also says something about his confidence to be committing with two other great WRs already on board. He is a competitor and exactly the kind of guy RR needs on the team.

Welcome.

The position being taken is not to be mistaken for attempted education or righteous accusation, only a description, just an observation of the pitiful condition of our degeneration.

Cool

I'd be most worried about Robinson de-committing over Jackson or Miller.

The other kids at least have ties to the school with Jackson's dad being a coach and Miller's mother being a UM alum.

It's time to focus on DTs and LBs for this class.

I know everything is subject to change,

but look at what he is saying - wanting to get out of OH and see new things, saying his recruitment is over, etc. There's no reason to go that far in your statements unless you are pretty set in your decision.

I get it

I don't blame him for wanting to get out of Ohio - but there are a lot of good schools out there.

We're talking about a 17 yr old kid and we've seen a number of them change their minds after telling us they were solid (Newsome, Beaver, etc, etc).

Robinson might take one look at the depth chart in 8 or 9 months and realize that his best opportunity to play might be to go somewhere else. You just never know with these kids. Nothing is certain until they sign that LOI.

Besides, Michigan is loaded at WR right now.

My point is simply that Robinson is more likely to de-commit because he doesn't already have strong ties to the school that Jackson and Miller do.

Not trying to knock the kid. I just wouldn't be shocked to see him change his mind.

I don't know about loaded.

I don't know about loaded. Once Greg Mathews graduates, the battle for the X and Z positions will begin. As of right now the front runners looks to be Stonum and Stokes, though Clemons does have a chance.

It's possible that may not work out, so having Miller, Robinson, and Jackson will be fine. It'll work out if one or two of these guys red-shirt. Everyone will see the field.

I was including Milller and Jackson

with that "loaded" comment.

We may disagree on the term - but I think most of us would agree that WR is the deepest position on the team - and by a significant margin.

If you're talking strictly

If you're talking strictly about outside receivers, I disagree. If you want to include Robinson, Miller, and Jackson, you have to get rid of Matthews, the only really established receiver in the bunch. While you can say the three above plus Stonum, Hemingway, and Stokes (EDIT: and Roundtree) makes a pretty awesome group, you have to remember that WR is the only 2010 position group with a commit. The OL is really deep (9 scholarship players will have Freshman status this year, plus Schilling, Ferrera, and Molk are only juniors/sophomores), as are the running backs and quarterbacks assuming more commits come from the 2010 class.

The whole offense is beginning to become stacked with depth, and besides the questions marks at quarterback, I think that outside receivers are the thinnest group on that side of the ball.

Edit: I forgot Roundtree. But still, I think that the OL, slot, and running back are deeper groups

Running back is not deeper.

Running back is not deeper. After this year, we only have Shaw, Cox, and Troussiant as natural running backs. Teric Jones and Smith are a mix between RB's and slot guys. We will need 2-3 running backs in this class, imo.

Nick Hill will be one. Lamb and/or Clay will hopefully be the others.

I think both Smith and Jones

I think both Smith and Jones will see more time at running back than slot receiver. Assuming Gallon qualifies, the slot will have Odoms, Robinson, Feagin, and Gallon to play a position that will usually only have one player on the field at a time. Running backs get hurt often, and I think that Smith and Jones will stay there for depth purposes.

As I said before, you also have to add in hypothetical recruits at these positions for 2010 since receiver is the only one that has any commits at this point. Assuming we add at least two OL and a running back, I say those positions plus the slot are deeper than outside receiver.

Clearly RR is selling Michigan well to recruits. Getting an Ohio guy is huge. All RR has to do is produce on the field next year and we will be set to make a big comeback in 2010.

Please just make it to 6 wins in 09!

the fact that the 2010 class

the fact that the 2010 class is now 3 WRs and 0 everything else reminds me of the E3W picture from last year showing the detroit lions new set with 9 WRs. we can do it now, but we'll like..win games.
also, if all 3 of them are on the 250 watchlist (and assuming they stay in the 250) that should mean we already have 3 4* WRs for 2010. im shifting to the 7 year plan so i can see these guys all play

Keep in mind

if there is a logjam at WR, any of these kids (or 08 or 09 kids) could be moved around to other positions. RR is recruiting athleticism, and perhaps the main benefit is that they aren't only able to play one position.

The position being taken is not to be mistaken for attempted education or righteous accusation, only a description, just an observation of the pitiful condition of our degeneration.

But but but.....

...sorry to be the lone voice of reason here but WHAT IF OSU offers? Let's see how committed he is then. I am not speculating at all that the kid is dishonest but it's early and he's from Ohio and he has had interest in OSU. And we ALL know how recruiting has changed. Verbals are pretty much meaningless these days.

It's good to be excited about

It's good to be excited about the 3 guys. But I think it must be tempered until they take some visits and reaffirm their commitment.

I was reading the buckeyeplanet recruiting, and was kind of surprised he committed so quick. He was really high on OSU 3 months ago.

Well, I still think it's kind of sweet he committed. As long as a receiver has talent, he will have a chance to contribute at WR university.

Ricardo for President!

It can't be said enough! It seems like he has a hand in every recruit that commits or Tom talks to. Why send the coaches on the road to recruit? Just send Ricardo!

Can't wait for RR's 2010 Signing Day presser

"X is another great guy we got coming in. Ricardo Miller was the lead recruiter on him."

Watch out Chris Singletary...

Ricardo is about to take over your job as Michigan Recruiting Coordinator.

Oh wait, never mind. Ricardo will be busy being a superstar wearing his No.1 jersey, and then excel in the NFL. You're really lucky Singletary, you dodged the bullet by a hair.

TomVH

If he is going to announce tomorrow, does this mean you know something Rich Rod does not?

Does this mean Rodriguez will

Does this mean Rodriguez will stop recruiting Chris Dunkley? DeJoshua Johnson is a slot receiver, is that correct?

I haven't seen too many DT, LB on the 2010 radar yet. But it is pretty early in the process.

You don't turn down elite

You don't turn down elite talent like those names you just mentioned. We can find schollies to fit everybody in. I have a feeling this is going to be a big, big class.

I agree with you, but I'm

I agree with you, but I'm just not sure the recruits will be happy to have an excess of players at their position. I know they don't mind competition, but at the same time they probably don't like overloading. I meant to say that if RR keeps going after WRs, it might make the already committed recruits think a little harder.

hmmm

I like how he said, "...Michigan is about to be in a good stage."

I hope that's a meme that gets spread hard and fast among recruits... wanna be a part of the glory days at the big house? Get on board now.
