Hello: Csont'e York

Our long regional nightmare is over, as Michigan has finally* netted commitment #18 in the class of 2013. Scout's Allen Trieu broke the news this afternoon that Harper Woods (MI) Chandler Park Academy WR Csont'e York—first name pronounced "Son-Tay", according to Sam Webb—pledged to Michigan after receiving an offer yesterday while on an unofficial visit to Ann Arbor. York becomes the second receiver in the class, joining Jaron Dukes, and his stock is on the rise after a couple standout camp performances in recent weeks.

GURU RATINGS

Scout Rivals ESPN 24/7 Sports
3*, #67 WR NR WR NR WR 3*, 88, #69 WR

As you can see, York is currently flying under the radar—ESPN didn't even have him in their recruiting database until today—with only Scout and 247 even bothering to rank him. Chandler Park isn't exactly a football powerhouse, however, playing in Michigan's Class B in the Charter School Conference, so he fits the profile of a sleeper recruit. Every service but Scout lists York at 6'3", with his weight at 185-190 pounds (Scout says 6'2", 180).

As mentioned above, York really burst onto the scene in recent weeks, earning offers from Michigan, Cincinnati, and Syracuse within the last 48 hours by excelling on the camp circuit. He was #5 on Barton Simmons's list of top performers at last weekend's Columbus NFTC, where he took home wide receiver MVP honors [EDIT: Sorry, misunderstood Sam Webb's Tweet; he said York was deserving of MVP honors, but they actually went to OH WR Gary Brown]:

The 6-2 prospect took countless reps, winning most of them and showing great ball skills, route-running and mismatch size. York has impressed us in several different settings and he deserves a lot more college interest than he is receiving.

Simmons wasn't the only scout lauding York after last weekend, as he also made Scout's Bob Lichtenfels's top ten ($):

York made everything look so easy that we started to take it for granted. By the end of the camp his circus catches were looking routine. He is very smooth in and out of his breaks. Possesses very good ball skills and gets separation from the defender. He uses his body well to shield defenders from the ball. Smooth, gliding type of runner. Not sure how good his top end speed is, but he is very tough to cover on the short to intermediate routes.

As you'll see on his film, York's ability to go up and catch the football is excellent; while it's an easy comparison to make, he's certainly reminiscent of a slightly taller, skinnier Junior Hemingway. Rivals's Josh Helmholdt scouted York at April's NLA 7-on-7 in Pittsburgh, where once again he was amongst the top prospects ($):

There were several big wide receivers making spectacular catches downfield on Sunday, and maybe none as interesting as York. At 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, York is a great-looking, big wide receiver. His size gives him the ability to be physical with cornerbacks at the line of scrimmage, then go downfield and outmuscle them for the football. He made several spectacular grabs along the sideline and in the end zone, showing outstanding body control and a great pair of hands.

While I don't expect Michigan's passing game to continue to rely so much on the jump ball post-Denard, it's good to know that York could thrive in such an offense. He's also got the size and strength to be a very solid possession receiver. Allen Trieu has a free assessment on York's Scout profile:

Long, lean receiver who does a great job of tracking the football, adjusting to passes in the area and controlling his body to make tough and acrobatic catches. Has great hands and leaping ability. He's not a 4.4 guy, but has a solid burst and can create separation both underneath and downfield. He's not one who will give you a ton after the catch, but he has all the tools to be a productive college receiver.

York's strengths are listed as Body Control, Hands and Concentration, and Size, while his areas for improvement are Elusiveness with Catch and Speed. He sounds pretty similar to Dukes in terms of style of play; this coaching staff seems to have a specific type of receiver in mind unless they're track-star fast like Devon Allen or just plain elite like Laquon Treadwell.

OFFERS

York only held offers from Bowling Green and Toledo before Michigan, Cincinnati, and Syracuse joined the fray this week. Again, sleeper status here.

STATS

A quick Google search didn't turn up any stats. I'll update if I come across any, though judging by his film he scored a whole bunch of touchdowns.

FAKE 40 TIME

None of the sites list a 40 time, FAKE or otherwise. ScoutingMichigan has a profile for York with a self-reported 40 time of 4.52 (thanks to ScoutExile for pointing this out). If that's a hand-time it's in the right range given the scouting reports. If it's electronic, that probably merits a three FAKEs out of five.

VIDEO

Junior highlights:

Jump balls and touchdowns aplenty.

PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE

The evidence is flimsy indeed, but York appears to fall into the same general category as Dukes: solid floor given his good size and hands, limited star potential due to a lack of top-end speed. Like Dukes, York will have every opportunity to see the field when he steps on campus thanks to Michigan's depth, as the only scholarship receivers on the roster will be Jeremy Jackson, Jeremy Gallon, Jerald Robinson, Drew Dileo, and this year's freshmen, Amara Darboh and Jehu Chesson. The only remotely proven commodity among that group is Gallon, who will be a senior when York is a true freshman. Given York's current under-the-radar status, it's foolish to attempt to project beyond him having a shot to see the field. Luckily, I should be able to see him play at least once this fall and get a better feel for how he performs in a game situation.

UPSHOT FOR THE REST OF THE CLASS

Michigan now has two receivers in the class, and they'll almost certainly take one more—Treadwell is the prohibitive favorite to take that last spot. After that, Michigan should have room for 4-5 more players, and the biggest area of need is at defensive tackle. Strongside DE is also a priority, and the Wolverines could also make a push for more help in the secondary. The last couple spots will likely be filled by the best players available, as Michigan now has that luxury after filling most of their major needs very early in the process.

------------------------
*Tongue-in-cheek, obviously. Michigan could take one commit per month from this point forward and have a full class before the regular season is over.

Definitely good to take 1 a year across the board. I know Magnus just could not believe we weren't gonna take a qb last year. But you never can tell who'se going to redshirt and who's going to move where either, especially with a new staff using established players. I've been worried about NT's for a while now, mostly. I'm believing BWC will be the monster we all dreamed he would be, but he's gone next year so it's Pipkins and Ash or bust. Everywhere else we have 4+ deep for now, except right down the middle.

Yeah, I know. Just where we have him I don't know. Wherever we need him I guess, but I still worry. Right now Black is preferred inside to him, maybe he develops and Black moves outside some, or maybe one of the young Ends really blossoms and they share the rotation.

It's more that of our best four DTs on the roster right now, three of them are nose tackles, Black being the other. It looks like Godin and/or Wormley will be a 3-tech behind Black after this fall, but in the meantime the coaches want someone with experience behind him, so it's Q.

Not taking a quarterback in 2012 is one of the things that might be preventing Michigan from moving Gardner to wide receiver.  If you've got Denard, Bellomy, and Freshman Guy at quarterback, you have a little bit more freedom.  Then if Bellomy or Morris is ready to start in 2013, he's got a go-to receiver.

I still think it was a mistake not to take a QB in 2012.  It's taking a very big risk and preventing some position flexibility.

Why take a #3 QB...

Dennis Norfleet and Willie Henry should actually PLAY in the Michigan careers.

Why take some random kid who isn't going to beat out Bellomy or Shane Morris?

Give me guys who are going to make an impact vs. a POTENTIAL #2 QB after Bellomy graduates.

Gardner can still play WR, Bellomy is capable.

And most of all, having some #3 kid like Austin Appleby doesn't change Gardner's status for this year anyway...are you really going to play a true freshman Appleby over WR - Devin Gardner if it came down to it? No. No one would.

There's no telling if Bellomy beats out Gardner for the #2 spot, Appleby or Brian Blackburn sure as hell weren't going to play over Devin as the #3 QB this season.

It's not about beating anyone out.  It's about having an insurance policy, having someone to quarterback the scout team, etc.

We go five-deep at weakside linebacker, but only three-deep at the most important position on the field.  Kaleb Ringer isn't going to beat out Joe Bolden or James Ross, so why recruit him?

Dennis Norfleet was completely unnecessary.  He was a luxury.  You can find other guys to return punts.  Don't get me wrong - I think he's going to be good at what he does.  But you can't convince me that getting a punt returner is more important than getting a quarterback when you're thin at QB.

It might not hurt Michigan...but it might hurt Michigan.

You're worried about the scout team over someone who will actually see the field?

Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. But why can't walk-on Brian Cleary run the Scout team along with Russell Bellomy?

We also have other walk-ons with more experience, are they completely inept to run the scout team? Would a true freshman Appleby or Blackburn be a tremendous upgrade? Personally, I don't think so.

Again, what does having a kid like Austin Appleby or Brian Blackburn bring you THIS year?

And is that player going to bring you something incoming freshman preferred walk-on Brian Cleary or one of the upperclassmen walk-on's cannot?

If we were talking Gunner Kiel or one of the elite guys, sure it would help you (although it may hurt you with Morris)...but we're not, this is taking "a" QB. And that fact is, after we went hard after Kiel and Mauk there really wasn't anything out there other than Appleby or Blackburn or someone of that caliber. That's not depth or scout team or anything other than a body in a true freshman season. It's not anything more than what we already have.

True, but we need a cool name for the #1.  So far Braylon is the most exciting, because the competition (Derrick, Anthony, David) is weak.

OT but tough break about the Wanderers this year. Im a big fan of Berra and Eggert Jonsson because I've always like the Hearts, and Fletcher is Scotlands best striker but he never gets any national team call ups even though they're hurting for a center forward. They need a reliable center of midfield, but I'm thinking it'll be a short stay in the Championship.

Not a huge fan of Berra. But I'm not sure anybody knows hte true ability of anybody on our defense. Not sure if they are bad individually or bad collectively. Didn't get to see alot of Eggert, but I know not many of the fans on the Wolves board I post on are fans of him. Love Fletcher. He'd have double the goals if he had more skilled guys around him. Hoping we are able to keep him, but I'm not optimistic.

It is definitely going to be an interesting offseason for us. Really unsure of how much of a problem personnel was, or if it was mostly tactics. I could see the new manager clean house or I could see him only making some minor adjustments. Relegation has been imminent for awhile, so I have come to accept it. I'm looking forward to a more even playing field next year, but not looking forward to only being able to see a few games.

They really liked Berra in Edinburgh, put a decent tag on him too, but you saw what coaching change and environment did to Torres this year. They're better than this season showed, as are a few others on the squad. Jonnson was just a good utility player. Did all the dirty work. Defensive midfield, Center back, Fullback. Starts for Iceland now with Gudjonsson and Swanseas Gylfi Sigurdsson and the lot. They were both made team captains before as a testament to their character.

The lack of love for Johnson may be a result of us expecting a big addition at the open of the transfer market and then we added a guy that most had never heard of. Word on him was that he was a Stephen Ward type - versatile, hard nosed and hustle. But he never got much run this year.

Our defense is a mess and it very well might have been tactics. No matter what we mixed and matched back there, we had terrible results. Even Bassong (who was a decent player at Newcastle and Tottenham) and Roger Johnson (did well when teamed with Scott Dann at Birm City) looked bad. Although RJ's problems run a little deeper than poor play.

Well the good news is you do have quality players. Hopefully they can be best used or properly motivated. Team chemistry is really tough to build, and mixing and matching can take a toll on its own. I have hope at least that the summer off, and the lighter competition will give them what they need to regroup and jump back into the top flight.

"He was a Michigan State guy, he wanted to go to Michigan State, and as soon as we walked in the door, they said, ‘we know you’re a State guy, but we guarantee when you leave you’ll be a Michigan guy,’" said Chandler Park coach John Jergovich, who accompanied York on the visit.

. . .

“As soon as I called them, I was like, 'You were right, you changed me, I’m not a State guy, I’m a Wolverine,'” York said.

The 18th commitment in the loaded 2013 class is the second receiver in the class, joining Jaron Dukes of Columbus, Ohio.

The extended tour of “every inch of Michigan’s campus,” as Jergovich described it, was enough to keep York up all night pondering the decision. His other offers were from smaller programs but he’s started to emerge at the summer workout camps.

“I was really surprised when they offered,” York said. “They said I’ve been under their radar and some of them said in my highlights I made it look too easy, they had to see me in a camp. I’ve been showing out in these camps.”

Really the 1 WR and 2 DT (preferably, 2 NG types) are all we really NEED. After that just take the best player available. Hopefully we turn most of our attention to Treadwell, Poggi and Vanderdoes...if we get 2, we're sitting pretty.

More than anything I just want a dominant beast in the middle on defense. I want a top 15 NFL draft pick at NG to come through Michigan.
