Michigan State 57 Michigan 56, Michigan 10-10 (3-5 Big Ten)

So, Michigan has been a pretty good team since the start of conference play. They look like a borderline NCAA squad. Except, uh, the season started in November, not January. Trying to dig out of a 6-5 hole before kicking off a single conference game, then throwing up all over themselves at Indiana, was something this team was never going to be able to do. The MSM articles have been harping on this point for weeks, but we've come to a point where the lack of leadership and the resulting inability to play urgently enough to show that an NCAA bid is something this team really wants, is bringing this team down.

Under different circumstances, a 1-point loss to Michigan State might be something of a moral victory. If Michigan had taken care of the non-conference schedule with only one or two losses like they should have, or not blown games against Indiana and Northwestern, or been able to steal the road win that they probably should have had against Wisconsin, I may be in a better mood. But those things didn't happen, and now this season is lost. An NIT bid is the best-case scenario.

I've gotten this far into the post without even talking about what happened in the game, because it really was that important for this season alone, much less the long-term implications of a Michigan basketball team that might be able to - gasp! - play with the Spartans. The Wolverines needed this game. They probably had this game, and it slipped away. Where last year's team was probably a bit lucky and a lot more grit gritterstein walkon-y, this team seems hollow, and we're beyond the point that the 2009-10 can be fixed.

The Wolverines played their asses off, forced turnovers, even got a few rebounds, and answered MSU runs. The Spartans shots the lights out (when they actually got shots), didn't let Michigan get good shots, and played a physical game. It transpired a lot like you'd expect, and Michigan simply couldn't hold onto a late lead. All credit goes to Kalin Lucas, who has ice flowing through his veins.

BULLETS

  • The last actual play Michigan ran was drawn up to get Manny all the way to the hoop. He couldn't get it there (and wasn't going to get a call), so he dished to Stu, who set up DeShawn with a good shot. Can't fault the X-and-O design.
  • Similarly, the out of bounds play was drawn up very well, and Michigan had a chance to win the game. I actually didn't think the no-call was egregious, but when I see things like this:
    peedimsu.jpg
@umhoops Legit complaint -- it's a foul, though one that's hardly ever called in that situation. Truthfully, if I was a M fan, I'd be upset. [from LVS of The Only Colors]
    ...this morning, it's really frustrating.
  • Great work by Michigan's guards holding onto the ball, which they've had a bit of trouble with in the past few games. Only Stu Douglass (3) and Zack Novak (1) had any turnovers.
  • The shooting regressed again. Darn. I think a lot of it was good defense by MSU, but there were some open looks that missed, and did so badly. This team needs another confidence booster, and fast.
  • Beilein said in the postgame presser that Manny coming off the bench was tactical, not punitive. I sort of liked the way it played out, too. I wouldn't be surprised if you see that type of starting lineup in a couple big games in the future.
  • Apparently it didn't come through on the telecast, but the Spartan fans were really damn loud in there. It's the duty of Michigan fans to be louder and not let that happen, and frankly, the M fans embarrassed themselves last night. It was almost as pathetic as the 2007 Ohio State football game. Shame on you.

Postgame Quotes

"Let's just have him come off the bench, and go in and be Manny out there." John Beilein, on Manny Harris not starting the game.

"If I was the other team, I wouldn't have wanted it called." DeShawn Sims, with the night's "duh" moment, on the last play of the game.

"Take a day off tomorrow, clear our mind, and Thursday we'll get ready for Iowa." Zack Novak, on how to shake off this game and move on.

"We've still gotta believe and continue to work hard to get better. At any time, we can make a run." Manny Harris, on the team's mental state.

In these last 10 games, I feel like we should start winning." Darius Morris, on how the tean's improvement will show on the court.

Michigan has a nice 3-day layoff (for the first time in 2 weeks) before inviting the Iowa Hawkeyes into Crisler Arena. Iowa is, like, terrible, so it would be very fitting for Michigan to choke this game away and cause mass suicides in the general Washtenaw County region.

it will almost certainly require 4 wins, rather than 3. It will be a neutral floor (unless Purdue or Indiana are playing; no matter what the conference may say, it's a home-court environment for them), which is sometimes an advantage, except that it's of course not Michigan's home court, and Michigan's non-home record is not full of quality wins. The opening-round game would not be one, but it would likely be MSU or Wisconsin next, and then assorted top-tier Big Ten teams after that. Home-court wins, yes. Four neutral-site or road games in four games? It would be nice, but I think they need to show more ability to make me believe it can happen.

While sitting in the student section I was actually pretty impressed with the noise level at the game. While the Spartans did appear to be loud I actually came to realize that it was our fans that were the propegating the "Go Green, Go White" cheer. Because as a student, when I hear this cheer it is my natural instinct to reply with "Can't Read, Can't Write" just to remind little brother of his inferiority. So I think half of the reason the MSU cheers seemed so loud was because Michigan fans were cheering along with them, but changing the words.

Were you also a part of the "embarrassment," as you call it? In the upper level the Sparties were loud, because that's where all their seats were. In the lower level I'm sure they could not even be heard. And, as someone mentioned above, the only time MSU fans were easily heard throughout was during Michigan FT attempts, because why in the hell would an M fan make noise when their own team was at the line?

Don't necessarily agree about how loud Sparty fans were....of course you could hear them during free throws, because no Michigan fans were cheering, but from low in the student section, I obviously could not hear any Sparty fans during game play, and thought that the students were as loud as the UCONN game... As Tim mentioned, the people I talked to who watched the game on t.v. said it was very loud and could not hear any State fans...Also, Spartan fans sure are not creative-the only thing I ever heard was the go green-go white chant

The only time the Spartans were really loud was during U of M free throws.... and it's not like we can drown them out with louder cheers, cuz you're supposed to stay quiet during free throws. I think that's why they weren't drowned out IMHO. Other than that I thought M was louder easily

I wish people would stop with "Go Green Go White." The way I was told was "Smoke Green! Snort White!" To me, that's a lot funnier plus it can't be confused with actually cheering for MSU.

I just don't know what I'm doing anymore. I need to get away. Here's what happened: earlier in the thread, a gentleman whose name escapes me seemed to say that he heard UM fans chanting "Go green go white" presumably for people to respond "Can't read, can't write." That's all fine, it's a great anti-MSU cheer. When I was a freshman, my roommate taught me the cheer as "Smoke green, snort white, can't read, can't write." I don't know if it's a variation or the original way, but there it is. Go Blue! (Don't ask why, it just seems right. Amen.)

What I want to know is why Manny gets thrown out of a game for what looked like the exact type of elbow the MSU player got an offensive foul? Kudos to ESPN for having the Manny incident ready pretty quick to compare. I watched the game on TV and the crowd seemed pretty loud (for Crisler) to me. Twice in the closing minutes Michigan came down the floor with the lead and the ball and couldn't score....frustrating!!

On DeShawn's postgame quote: I think he was just acknowledging that while it was probably a foul, he can understand why it was not called and that he didn't hold any resentment. Not a "duh" moment, actually a show of humility and sportsmanship.

I disagree about Spartans fans being loud. It's a given that a big rival's fans are going to be loud in your arena no matter how many of them there are. For example, the last four minutes of the UM-MSU football game last year, you could only hear M fans. The State fans were dead quiet. So yes, much of the noise was very situational but overall this was the loudest game this year at Crisler -- much louder than the UConn game, even. I don't think there's any merit in saying "shame on you for not being loud" because it was loud as hell the entire game. State fans were only loud during like 4 baskets in the second half, and free throws. That's it.

with heart and emotion. When you play a better team, all you can hope for is a chance to win and Michigan had that chance. As a Michigan Fan, I'm proud of this teams effort last night.

There will be a time when our beloved Wolverines will win the B10 (or B14) Championship and the NC, but not yet. They played toe to toe with sparty. The did not get the call they needed. Just like the time when sparty ruined our #1 football ranking in 1990 on a ref's blown call. Or the time sparty's time keeper quickly pushed the button to stop the clock E. Lansing to thwart our B10 Championship in football. They need times like these. Because in the grand scheme of things and despite the ref's blindness, Michigan is still better and will produce more winning than sparty can imagine. Their time is ending. The pendulum is swinging back in our favor.
