I don't think this really changes things. We assume Charlie is making comporable money at ND (this is purely speculative because it is a private university and this information is not released). Also, Urban's buyout clause is still only half a million which not too large of a sum (see RichRod). Florida left the buyout at this amount because they say they only want coaches who want to coach at Florida to be there. I think that down the road a couple of years if ND wants Urban and he wants to coach there then it will still happen.

Notre Dame has a bevy of options. Gruden, Kelly, Skip Holtz, Turner Gill, Pat Fitzgerald, Jeff Jagodzinski... there are any number of coaches who would relish the opportunity.
I actually think Jagodzinski would be an excellent choice, he's Catholic and is a good head coach.

It would be funny to watch someone who complains about other teams' schedules so often coach a team with one of the easiest schedules out there. If ND gets back to elite level, they really should beat everyone on their schedule except USC and UM pretty handily.
They do schedule an occasional third or even fourth difficult game, but they are brilliant at scheduling mid-level teams from bigger conferences. Occasional upsets notwithstanding, the MSUs, Purdues, Wazoos, and Pitts of the world look good on paper, but are a step or two shy of being able to beat a true top-ten team most years.
That allows ND not only to pad their record, but avoid injuries save their energy for the few elite teams they schedule.
Harbaugh will have a chance to beat ND on Nov 28. It should be an entertaining week leading up to the game considering that Weis and Harbaugh might be the two most obnoxious coaches in the game right now if they weren't so grossly overshadowed by Lane Kiffin.

that Meyer's buyout is $600,000. Considering what Notre Dame would be paying to Weis if they fired him, and considering what they paid to Ty Willingham, a number ten times that amount would be no impediment to getting Urban Meyer in South Bend.

I don't think money would be an object for either of the parties involved. I hope he doesn't move to South Bend anytime soon because I wouldn't want to play a Meyer team every year. Not that I think Gruden is any less of a coach but I wouldn't mind seeing him at ND. I think he would make an excellent college football coach.

Here we all are complaining about having to play an Urban Meyer team every year should he coach at ND, when just a week ago we were complaining about not scheduling elite teams once or twice a year. If Meyer comes to ND, wouldn't that solve everyone's problem? We would get to play an elite team every year (granted it would be the same team repetitively) to help us get better and we could still schedule all 4 home OOC games to keep the administration happy. In my opinion, this is the solution to everyone's problem.
Disclaimer: I too would dread the thought of having to play Meyer every year, but it would make us a better program in the end.

I would go with Skip Holtz. He seems to be a pretty good coach, although ECU sort of imploded last year following the NC State game but they did win CUSA, and obviously he has legacy as Lou Holtz's son.
Jagz isn't coming back to the college game. Apparently he really didn't like recruiting and just wasn't that happy. When he and BC parted ways, it seemed to be rather mutual even though BC's reason for firing him sounded ridiculous.
It sounds like Pope Urban just isn't coming to ND. His teams would be insane. He and RR seem to be buddies (strange because Creyer seems to rub everyone the wrong way and RR actually seems liked by other coaches for his spread offense clinics) and this would definitely make the rivalry more interesting.

They will call Meyer and ask if he is interested in the job and Meyer will hang up the phone and get back to coaching his Gators. Meyer is in the perfect spot to recruit the best and most sought after recruits in the nation. I know what you are going to say "ND has the ability to recruit nationally but so does UF. Meyer would be a crazy man if he was to leave UF. The bad thing is he is what early 40's so he has a long time to keep the Gators on top of the world.

I'd be thrilled if Meyer wound up at ND. I get this impression that most of us can't stand the guy. One of the things that made UM/ND a great rivalry was our utter contempt for Lou Holtz. Every time he opens his mouth on ESPN it just gets my blood boiling again. We tease the large entity known as Charlie Weis... but is he as hate-able? I could see us enjoying some extreme satisfaction over beating a Meyer-coached ND team. I don't know about all of you, but the best thing about winning the 2008 Cap One bowl (after defeating His Holiness St Timothy, of course) was taking down Urban Meyer a notch. Wouldn't it be fun to have regular opportunities to do that?

I think Meyer will consider ND whenever they remove Weiss, but my guess is that he'll stay in Florida because (a) he's treated as a God there already, (b) far easier to recruit there with more in-state talent as well as a more lax admissions standard (and I know this is oft-repeated, but it should be noted that Meyer has complained before that recruiting at ND would limit his ability to nab kids he can get at Florida), and (c) the pressure to win at ND would be so great that when he struggled, and he would, he would lose some of his luster. At Florida, he has won enough that he could have a couple of bad seasons and nobody would bat an eye; if he struggled in his first year or two at ND (like RR at UM), the fans would be out for blood because he doesn't have the goodwill built up yet. Look at Weiss - he won the first few years he was there, and that certainly has helped mute the past few seasons of mediocrity.

I agree with the people rooting for Meyer at ND. Want a premier OOC opponent every year? This is the way to get there.
Furthermore, we should be hoping the good Big Ten coaches at less prestigious programs stick around, too. Illinois is a realistic top 25 team every year, if Zook sticks around. I hope Dantonio is as good as he thinks he is, and that he stays with Sparty. This is a *good thing* for the Big Ten's national rep. If we can't beat these programs when they're decent, we don't deserve a New Years Day bowl anyway.
