I would love some more insider insight on this topic, but was Gutierrez simply unable to beat out Navarre or did the coaching staff simply not trust a decision to push out an experienced QB? I know Gutz was to have his chance in '04 and was dealt a cruel hand. He just seemed to me that he could have been a pretty good player for us and be able to win the starting job in '03 with a second year under his belt. Obviously he did not, but I think about all the teeth gnashing with Navarre and wonder if it could have been different.
In regards to Henne and getting his lost starting job back there, well Henne was pretty damn good and I can't fault Gutz for not being able to beat him out. Maybe it was the way it worked out for him or an anti-Navarre bias, but I always wanted to see what he could have done with significant game experience.
