Greg Mattison Staying On
Bryan Fuller
247 is reporting that three different recruits have been contacted by Greg Mattison in his capacity as a Michigan assistant coach within the last day. It's not clear what his role is, but we're going to guess he ends up as a DL or LB coach with either a co-DC or associate head coach title and put him on the assistant board in ink:
OFFENSE | Coach | confidence | DEFENSE | Coach | confidence |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
OC | Tim Drevno | lock | DC | DJ Durkin | lock |
QB | Jim Harbaugh | lock | DL | Durkin | lock |
RB | Ty Wheatley | probable | LB | Greg Mattison | lock |
WR | Tim Morton | probable | OLB/DE | Roy Manning | probable |
OL | ??? | ??? | DB | Greg Jackson | none |
TE | Vince Marrow | maybe | ST | ??? | none |
Drevno may take on the offensive line by himself or Michigan may add a dedicated OL coach. Sam says Michigan is reaching out to OL coaches($), including Oklahoma's. Adding an OL coach would either mean that Michigan goes with just four guys on D or Marrow isn't added—I doubt that anyone would go without an RB or WR coach.

Do you really think Wheatley and Morton are probable to come in as positional coaches, considering they were positional coaches in the NFL this past season? Both would seem to be taking a step backwards on the career arc, Wheatley especially, as Drevno would be be certainly coordinating the run game.
I could still see the possibility of Morton coming on with the title of "passing game coordinator" but I'm thinking Wheatley may have stopped being at all likely once Drevno was hired.

would still be possibilities.

Not so sure about Wheatley coming to be running back coach. I could be wrong, but I thought he said during the season that he was interested in being OC only. Thoughts change tho. Could be as simple as a phone call from JH and the loyaly to UM to bring him onboard.

not make a lateral move. OC is not the only possibility for that.

people do make these kind of moves all the time... Drevno and Mattison are both examples, Charlie Weis left the Chiefs for a college OC gig, etc. There are a lot of lateral moves or demotions in football... Colorado just lost a coordinator to UNLV.

Harbaugh is an amazing coach in his own right, but he's doing a great job of surrounding himself with great football minds. The future is bright, my friends.

Wheatley could be Assistant HC and RB coach.

are we going to make every assistant an assistant head coach as well? Wheatley's resume doesn't merit it (yet).

He was a ver good recruiter, and will keep som e continuity in transitioning to a new coaching staff. As was mentioned as well, he can help Harbaugh get to know some of the players, their strengths/weaknesses, etc. Should be a top notch staff.
I too am wondering about who will be the SC Coach. Very important for winter conditioning, which gets underway shortly. Either Billy DeLorbe or Kevin Tolbert would be fine with me.

Brian,
Have you actually heard anything which would indicate Wheatley as a probable addition to the staff? I said this in another post, but I have a family member who is actually personal friends with Wheatley, and he said in the past that he wasn't really interested in coming here if Harbaugh is coach.
I know it would be very convenient based on circumstances, but every piece of inside info I have says it's rather unlikely.

Wheatley may be a little more flexible now that he is out of a job in Buffalo.

not going to get picked up pretty quickly? He opted out so I assume he has some options and would likely just take Wheatley with him to the next job.

I'm one of the few people that isn't gaga about Mattison coming back. I realize he has some strengths but I don't think he's that great. I'm assuming he thought Countess could play press man coverage. He almost always went to the prevent defense right before the half. I got tired of watching UM's defense make the opponents QB look like they were all big ten, when against most teams they were at best average.

This is a mistake. Probably a well-intentioned one. But still. Harbaugh's changes will be an implied rebuke to the Hoke era and Mattison will be sitting there to make everyone feel terrible about it. He will be a magnet to every malcontent who loved Brady. No doubt, he will handle it all professionally. But a clean sweep is needed. Since Mattison is the single guy who most strongly supported Hoke, he was the last member of Hoke's staff who is needed hanging around this program. I love the guy and all, and we are paying him. But this kind of thing never works out very well. It's just too much humiliation to ask a guy to absorb. And a younger Durkin is coming in to change things from how Mattison did them, with Mattison on his staff? Won't work out well.
