Grant Mullins To Cal Comment Count

Ace

Shortly after wrapping up a visit to Michigan, Columbia grad transfer Grant Mullins announced his commitment to Cal for his senior season. The combo guard was also considering Syracuse.

This leaves Michigan with an open scholarship for next season, and unless another grad transfer candidate emerges out of the blue, it's likely John Beilein will use it on a late-rising 2016 prospect—or, like he did last year, leave the scholarship open, which seems like the least-desirable route.

Sam Webb reported last week that Michigan was showing interest in four-star WI F Kostas Antetokuonmpo, but there hasn't been any word on him since then. The coaches checked in on IMG Academy three-star F Aleem Ford last week; he committed to Wisconsin shortly thereafter. Unless the coaches can get Antetokuonmpo to campus, they might be scrambling for other options.

Those other options almost certainly won't include Spike Albrecht, who's already visited Purdue and plans to see Wichita State and Syracuse. Even if Michigan decides they're willing to sacrifice some early development for Xavier Simpson to bring Albrecht back, the Wolverines won't represent Spike's best opportunity to play the most minutes.

Dawkins took 123 over the last 2 years in Big 10 play - and he hit 49% of those. 189 3PA is a good sample size for his 2-year career.

For context Duncan Robinson took 105 3s in Big Ten play this year.  Nik Stauskas took 182 his freshman year.

hating and Beilein defending both welcome - What is the most likely reason why Beilein would let Spike go only to be doggedly pursuing somebody to fill this last scholarship? Spike wanted to go?  Spike injury a lingering one?  Simpson really is that good?  John Beilein all of the sudden is a raging psychopath with unexplained Criminal Minds hatred for fifth year seniors?

Cuonzo Martin couldn't coach himself out of a cardboard box. He's done less with more talent in the last 5 years than most other big time coaches. Those Tennessee teams had an underrated amount of talent and his Cal team this past year had plenty too. He turned all of that into two NCAA wins.

If it's 5 Spikes at a time and the team-of-spikes gets 6 fouls each to Hack-a-Drum, my money is on The Spikes.  They'd get some steals and charges mixed in between getting dunked on too.

Drummond's a great athlete but The Drums won't be able to cover The Spikes passing, driving, and shooting.  Too much ground to cover on the perimeter.

Team hitting 40% on 3s > Team hitting 40% on FTs

Lol you clearly don't know what you're talking about if you think not winning in the tournament this season w/ Cal had anything to do with Cuonzo's ability to coach. You know what he did have a lot to do with? The highest seed in school history.

Unless it's his fault that Cal's senior leader broke his hand 2 days beforehand, their hottest player couldn't play due to back spasms, and their lottery pick freshman slumped hard in the last 3 games. Or maybe it's his fault that an assistant coach was fired 4 days before the NCAA tourney game for sexual harassment. Seriously, everything that could have gone wrong did, that's why Cal lost. Not because of Cuonzo.

I would like to be a fly on the wall on his recruiting trips.  Program like Michigan should be killing it.  Especially after that 3 year run he had.

There is no denying his offensive schemes are off the wall.  He is an offensive savant.  His players even appear much better than they actually are because of his system.

But his recruting and defensive coaching are severely lacking.

Im on the fence here.  I like the comfort of knowing this program is and will be squeaky clean. And at times, this team is such a joy to watch.  At other times, is so damn frustrating though.

I am close to giving up on the 'do it the right way 100%' theory, and getting a dude like Harbaugh here, who will ambitiously recruit and do it as close to bending the rules but not breaking them as possible.  FROM ABUSE COMES CONTROL AND SUBS!

The problem with Beilein is that he ties his own hands behind is back. it's already hard enough going up against programs who break the rules, but his refusal to go into some gray areas as well as his ridiculous offer policy is killing this program on the recruiting trail.

Warde needs to have a long conversation with this guy. He has more resources at his disposal than almost any coach in the country.

"Killing the program". As in have you not watched the last two years of basketball? He failed miserably to turn that final 4 run into any kind of recruiting success.  Did you know Minnesota and Penn State have higher ranked classes coming in than Michigan does next year?!

NCAA sanctions killed the program.  Ellerbe's inept coaching killed the program.  2 bad recruiting classes in a row is a major blow to the progam.

Beilein (and his recruiting) have been a big reason for the rise of the program over the last decade - the opposite of being dead.

Results actually matter. The class being more highly ranked does not necesarrily equaly better results on the court. If Minnesota has a higher ranked class, it still has to be coached by Richard Pitino, so it will likely be a win for Michigan.

Basketball recruiting has officially become a clusterfuck. No ifs ands or buts about it.

Next year is a big one for Beilein.

When Beilein identifies talent and gets it, it tends to work out, regardless of starz.

Davis and Teske were early offers that both fit exactly what Beilien should be going out and getting at the 5 (players with legit size and/or strength who can finish inside off the pick and roll, block shots, rebound).  No more undersized hybrids who might be able to hit a 15 footer but will be shoved around and dunked on.

Watson's profile is similar to Hardaway. He wasn't a late add like Levert.

Simpson is your next Morris-Burke-Walton.

Walton-Irvin-Donnal was much higher rated but I'd bet this class is more successful.

14 and 15 were not only rated poorly but they were not the guys beilein tried to get.  They were option D types.  This class is option B types.

Wagner and Wilson most certainly were.  The list of guys who rejected Beilein before those guys were contacted is very long.

Chatman - might have been a Plan A guy, but he was tight-lipped about his recruitment so it's hard to tell.

Doyle - was a Plan B or C guy but he was recruited early enough that you can't call him Plan D.

I disagree.  What plan A big man were we recruiting before Wagner?  He was a top 40 recruit.  Wilson was a top 100 recruit.  These aren't plan D guys.  Plan B maybe, but they were solid recruits.  The plan D guys were MAAR and Dawkins (oddly enough these turned out to be the most productive players from that class).  It was just poor talent evaluation.
