Georgia In The Big House? Not So Much

The Michigan Daily reports this doozy of a rumor:
Some sources tell me that the Athletic Department is looking into a home game against the University of Georgia in 2010, one that would also bring the Wolverines to Athens in 2011.
Whaaaa? A quick check of Georgia's future schedules reveals an open date in 2010 but the opening week of the season is currently filled by Louisiana Lafayette. UGA's other nonconference games that year are @ Colorado and @ Georgia Tech. In 2011, Georgia's schedule is already complete, with home games against Louisville, GT and a couple of cupcakes lined up.
To add Michigan, Georgia would have to…
- accept three nonconference road games against legit opponents in 2010,
- accept three nonconference home games against legit opponents in 2011,
- move the Louisiana Lafayette game, and
- cancel an existing 2011 game.
The former two would be unusual for any college football team not named USC. The latter two cost money. The athletic department can "look into" a home-and-home with Georgia all they want, but UGA is an poor fit for a home-and-home over the next couple years. They are not likely to go for it; if they do they're likely to demand exorbitant terms that Michigan will balk at.

is that the athletic department contacted a big-time team about a home and home. (Of course, that is if the rumor is true).
Georgia may be a logistic impossibility, but if the athletic department really contacted them, then they might be contacting other teams which Brian suggested on his Boise St. Post(6/19):

Any of those would be awesome. Also it's funny Brian sort of suggested Georgia had an opening, and now that there's a rumor out there it could be Georgia he destroys it.

what if the return game isn't in 2011? we've done that before haven't we (Oregon 2007)? then they only have to move one game. Still they'd be looking at three legit non-conference road games plus the SEC schedule in 2010, but maybe if they're planning a 2011 national championship run they want their equally talented and inexperienced 2009 freshman 4 star QB to get a good deal of seasoning in 2010.

depends on your definition of transition. I'd call going from a 3 year starter and the #1 pick in the NFL draft to a true freshman at quarterback a transition.

The one-year game between 2010 and 2012 wouldn't be that bad for either team, since it would give them a marque game on the calendar for next year while also whetting the appetites for fans in 2012, when both teams could be MNC competitors. Seems like a win-win to me.

As an FYI.... Georgia plays at Georgia Tech in Atlanta this upcoming season (2009) and in 2011.
Georgia hosts Georgia Tech in Athens in 2010.
