Friday Recruitin' Evidently Doesn't Need A Spring Game

Big-Time Visit Weekend Remains Big-Time Visit Weekend

Frankly, I wasn't expecting to write this post today once Michigan cancelled its spring game, but the recruiting process cares not for spring weather, and the coaches have ensured this is still a major visit weekend.

TMI's Sam Webb has a comprehensive, free rundown of this weekend's visitors. I'll hit on the highlights, including all of the official visitors—remember, this is the first year since the rule change that allows OVs in the spring.

The headliner is five-star OH DE Zach Harrison, who will spend Saturday on campus before heading home Sunday, per 247's Bill Kurelic. This will be an unofficial visit for Harrison, whose recruitment is shaping up to be a Midwest battle with Ohio State currently holding all 12 of his crystal ball picks. Michigan and Penn State are chasing the Buckeyes. The Wolverine's Brandon Brown is hearing Michigan is at least making things interesting:

"It was a two-horse race for a while with Ohio State and Penn State but Michigan has probably made it a three-horse race in recent weeks," a source close to the situation said. "I don't think anyone else has a realistic shot, though he'll still list Clemson and Notre Dame."

This weekend's visit will be important for making up ground on the Buckeyes, who are still the presumed favorite.

While this isn't setting up to be a carpal tunnel weekend, Sam has sounded a potential commitment watch—albeit without a gut feeling—for four-star FL CB Te'Cory Couch, a very soft Tennessee commit who's expected to wind up at either Michigan or Miami (YTM). He told 247's Andrew Ivins those two schools are the ones he's most focused on, and he's certainly hearing the right things from the Wolverine coaches:

"I just want to see what it's like there how the players live and stuff like that," he said when asked about the Wolverines. "I just want to see what they do on a day-to-day basis and the education. I'm talking a lot with [defensive coordinator Don Brown]. He loves me. He tells me that I'm the No. 1 corner on his board all the time."

A decision could come soon. While Sam didn't issue that gut feeling, he put in a Crystal Ball pick for Michigan, which is pretty close.

[Hit THE JUMP for more on weekend visitors.]

The Officials

Michigan is expected host three official visitors in addition to Couch and quarterback commit Cade McNamara.

Four-star SC TE Luke Deal is taking a number of officials in advance of his May 25th commitment. Clemson has all three crystal ball picks for Deal but this one feels far from over. He's already taken an official to NC State, and in addition to Michigan, he'll take OVs to Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Auburn before his announcement—all in a week's time. We'll see how things shake out after his marathon visit week.

Two of Couch's high school teammates, four-star WR John Dunmore and four-star S Keontra Smith (a Kentucky commit) will accompany him on official visits. Neither has mentioned Michigan much, if at all, through the course of their recruitments, and Dunmore is expected to wind up at Florida State. Maybe that'll change after seeing campus, but Couch looks like by far the most realistic option of the Chaminade-Madonna Prep trio.

Notable Unofficials

Sam mentioned hearing some rumblings that four-star OG commit Nolan Rumler might be wavering in his commitment, but since Ed Warinner replaced Tim Drevno, that doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. Rumler tweeted this in anticipation of his weekend visit:

100% committed https://t.co/6mb4Peztws

— Nolan Rumler (@steamboat_70) April 13, 2018

I don't think we have much to worry about there. Rumler is a Michigan lifer.

Michigan could bolster their O-line class by putting in more work with in-state three-star OL Karsen Barnhart. While Michigan State was the early favorite, Michigan has shown increased interest, and 247's Allen Trieu—who currently has a pick in for MSU—told Sam he believes the Wolverines have "at least made things even." At 6'4", 282, Barnhart probably projects to the interior of the line even though he's currently listed, like most high school linemen, as a tackle.

The biggest uncommitted name to take an unofficial is top-100 Rhose Island OT Xavier Truss. If you saw Rhode Island and thought, "I wonder if he played with Kwity Paye," the answer is, yes, of course he did. From TMI's Josh Newkirk:

“I’m talking to pretty much everybody,” Truss said of U-M. “Coach (Jim) Harbaugh and coach Don Brown I talk to. I probably talk to coach Brown the most from Michigan because he recruited Kwity Paye from my school, he was class of ’17. So while he was in the recruiting process to Michigan, Don Brown the defensive coordinator came to talk to him and kind of got interested in me.”

There's plenty of competition for Truss, who has a who's-who list of power programs on his offer sheet and plans to check out Auburn, Georgia, Clemson, and Ohio State before enrolling early. Even for an elite prospect with elite options, though, you have to like Michigan's chances with Don Brown going hard after an East Coast kid.

For the rest of this weekend's visitors, make sure you click over to Sam's overview.

East Coast is his area.

He played a major role in landing Tarik Black. He's got a ton of connections there from recruiting that region for so long. There's almost always more than one coach working on a guy, too, especially a big-time prospect—Jay Harbaugh also recruited Black, for instance.

At most schools, each member

At most schools, each member of the staff has a specific region or area they’re designated to recruit, regardless of position. Position coaches often recruit players in their own region as well, but there’s situations like Don Brown in the northeast and Partridge in Jersey where their familiarity with the coaches in the area and their own success in the region is just as much, if not a larger, sell.

Te'Cory Couch

how could he NOT love Don Brown?

I mean seriously, I listen to a Don Brown press conference, and I'd run through a cinder block wall for the man.  If he was recruiting me?

I'd eat a bowl of nails for breakfast....without any milk!!!

I could see Barnhart

I could see Barnhart committing this weekend. I expect Couch may wait a while deciding between Miami and Michigan. Oh lawd please let us get Truss. He looks like an absolute beast. Also it's nice to hear positive recruiting news with Harrison visiting. Even with the storm, it looks like it'll be a good recruiting weekend.

hmm

Am I the only one that finds it very encouraging that Zach Harrison is going to be at UofM instead of (home state) OSU's Spring Game? Or is he possibly seeing both since OSU just announced they're moving it to earlier in the day?

In reality, a spring game is just another practice. These kids can go on any visit at any time and they will more than likely sit in on a practice. I don’t think going to our practice on a particular day means anything, as I’m sure he’s seen a few OSU practices already.

Not a normal practice

Except OSU is charging $5 a ticket and sold out and they are bringing in current and former NFL players to meet recruits. They are clearly trying to make it a big recruiting event and not a normal practice.

This is gonna be a really

This is gonna be a really good class on defense, a great one if they can hold onto Herron or add a guy like Harrison. They're obviously coming from behind but huge to get him on campus with no spring game and OSU hosting theirs.

If Michigan has the kind of offensive resurgance we can reasonably hope for I think more skill names will come into play; it won't match the D/OL 'crootin but the ceiling there has to be higher than the bleak (and accurate) current state of things Brian outlined this week.

Reasonable offensive ceiling to me is probably strong run game with occasional big play PA thrown in; Shea's mobility in the red zone with the Black/DPJ/Nico/Zentry/McKeon/Wheatley/Eubanks giant squad is tantalizing too. I might have a bad case of the Spring Hopes.

I'm curious about Herron

There was rumblings and bunch of CBs for Herron flipping to Stanford a while ago, but he still hasn't pulled the trigger and officialy flipped. I'm interested to see if we can get him back on campus and try to sure up his commitment because he's definitely a super talented and apparently a super smart kid

I'm saying Rumler was an anomaly.  Sure we beat OSU for him (so far) but when a kid lists his goals as an 8th grader and one of them is to play football for UM, you have a big leg up right out of the gate.

But the question was when was the LAST time, and the answer is Rumler (so far)

We have 2 Heisman trophy winners from ohio, and if they grew up M fans, my only question is how do we get MORE M fans to raise athletic young men there?!

You guys kill me with that.

You guys kill me with that.  So what, we just shouldn't even bother?  Hell why bother recruiting top recruits at all?  They're all slaves to the south and the SEC.  Let's just sign a bunch of low 3 stars and go 5-7 every year.  You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Yeah, yeah, Gretzky misspoke.  You get the point.  If you don't shoot, you can't score.

I actually agree

But the Harrison kid is going to OSU. There's no point in hyping up the Michigan faithful on this one. If he were a receiver or QB, I'd say we had a chance but he's a DE from Ohio (close proximity to Columbus) and they've been producing alot of NFL talent at that position.

Not sure it was the last but I think Dymonte Thomas fits the criteria.

Whiffs

Are 50 whiffs in Ohio worth it to get Howard and Woodson?

Obviously

I’d whiff on 50 Ohio kids if the next two were Woodson and Howard

Is that a real question? I would think the obvious answer is yes.

Howard and Woodson. Probably

Howard and Woodson. Probably the two greatest Ohio HS players of all time. Certainly the two smartest!

Well, sure.

But Sam's is originally sourced and he actually double-checked to see who's still coming up after the spring game cancellation.

Watching Zach Harrison's video

I have a feeling I may regret that 4 minute investment.  I just saw James Hudson on defense and Nick Eubanks on offense - and it was the same person.  That guy looks insane - not just his physical stature, but his quickness, speed, hands, athleticism, and just plain awesomeoness.  I hope against hope that we do not have to play against that guy 3 times; would be much more fun to watch him play 45 times or so as a Wolverine.  Thanks Ace, for the great article.  I can only hate myself for clicking on that video - images now burned in my mind forever.

Though it's probably Five to One he goes elsewhere,

The Door's open for John Dunmore to Light our Fire and make us all Love Him Madly, especially if he were to Break on Through for quality playing time on our receiving corps, which is already deep in talent.

At 6'3" but only 170lbs, though, he'll need to eat more than just his drumsticks to get a little more meat on his bones.
