New Commit LA S Carvin Johnson

Last week: Rummel knocks off Shaw 18-17.

Breaud was terrific, taking many huge hits, particularly from a human missile named Carvin Johnson and by linebacker Chris Randle. Johnson, who earlier this week committed to Michigan, returned a punt 69-yards for a score on a brilliant effort but the play was called back for a block in the back by Rummel.

This week: Rummel (10-0) v. Captain Shreve in Round 1 of the State Playoffs.

MI QB Devin Gardner

Last week: Inkster defeats Redford Thurston 50-28 in Round 2 of the State Playoffs. Article 2.

Gardner was 6-of-11 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran 11 times for 120 yards and three more touchdowns.

"He played one of the better games of the year for me," Inkster coach Greg Carter said. "He took the game over. Every time Redford Thurston (8-3) would score, he would lead the team down to answer."

Paul was there (albeit a little late), so enjoy some video from the second quarter on:

CityBallers was also there, and they provide video as well.

This week: Inkster (7-3) @ Southgate Anderson in Round 3 of the State Playoffs.

MI RB Austin White

Last week: Stevenson falls to Detroit Catholic Central 0-38.

Senior Austin White, who has committed to play at the University of Michigan next season, finished the game with 75 yards on 10 carries for the Spartans, but was unable to use his speed to break a big run against the very solid Shamrocks defense.

...except for a 30-yarder, which I would call "big." I was there, so enjoy some video:

As you can see, Stevenson employed some direct-snap shotgun stuff for White, including throwing a pass. I hadn't seen them use that before this year, and I wonder if this was its debut. If so, I question the logic of installing something completely new for a big playoff game. I also question the logic of only giving your running back the ball 10 times when he averages 7.5 yards each carry, but whateva.

TX RB Tony Drake

Last week: Skyline pounds Sunset 56-0. Drake had just two carries, but they spanned 102 yards, and both made it into the end zone:

Tony Drake ran up the middle 79 yards untouched with 4:50 remaining to give Skyline a 7-0 lead. Drake scored on a 23-yard run on Skyline’s next play to make it 14-0 with 2:37 remaining.

Then he got taken out of the game and Skyline won the end.

TX RB Stephen Hopkins

Last week: Game preview:

Give me Marcus RB Stephen Hopkins to not want his spectacular career to come to an end just quite yet and a Marcus win. Prediction: Marcus 27, Hebron 23.

In reality, Marcus pounds out a 35-28 win over Hebron. Hopkins ran 28 times for 171 yards and touchdowns of 37 ad 22 yards. Article 2:

Marcus running back Stephen Hopkins, who entered the game needing 44 yards to set the school’s all-time rushing record, gained 171 yards with two touchdowns

“We’ve had a great offensive line since I have been here,” Hopkins said. “And coach Erwin always believed in me. Thanks to all of them I was able to get that done.”

“It was all guts,” Hopkins said. “We picked the right time to show it and I’m proud of the team for how we fought and won. We have to keep fighting and keep getting better every week,” Hopkins said. “We have to step it up on offense and on defense and we have a chance.”

LA Slot WR Drew Dileo

Last week: Game preview:

“I love playing at The Rock,” said Dileo, a Michigan football commitment who has scored 11 touchdowns this season. “The atmosphere is great. It’ll be a packed house and we’re playing for the district championship. It’s a great honor to be in this rivalry.”

More pregame fluff. Parkview beats rival Redemptorist 44-27.

It looked like the Wolves had Parkview stopped, but on fourth-and-3 at the PBS 47 the Eagles executed a fake punt, with Dileo running 24 yards for a first down.

Three plays later, Dileo scored on an option pitch around left end. Scott’s second PAT made it 17-7 with 9:39 left in the half.

Dileo later had a 41-yard punt return.

A 23-yard Wilson to Dileo pass helped key the drive that ended with a 2-yard TD run by Brandon Johnson.

This week: Parkview Baptist (8-1) v. Marksville in Round 1 of the State Playoffs.

Last week: Pioneer gets rocked by Canton 24-60. Miller had a TD catch:

But when Pioneer's Miles Sorise found Ricardo Miller on a 36-yard touchdown pass less than a minute into the second quarter to trim the deficit to a touchdown, it appeared Pioneer was ready to match Canton score for score.

and apparently 6 total catches for 82 yards. Update: 85 yards.

"It's frustrating, but even moreso because I'm a senior," Wilkins said. "When you're a senior, any game can be your last game. You definitely want to get back and play."

When asked how he thought he has played this year, Wilkins said, "On defense, I wasn’t having as good of a year as I did last year. But I think some of that was due to a lot more people knowing who I was this year, and teams scheming more around me. I'm more involved in the offense this year, though. I was having an OK defensive year."

Awesome write up as usual, Tim. How can we not be extremely excited about the make up of this class to date? With the way that this season has gone I've somewhat shifted my attention to the recruiting process more than I normally would have done at this point in the season, and I'm definitely excited for these kids to get to campus! They may not be the most highly rated group, but each of them fits a program need nicely.

Thanks. Looks good. But I'll just say it. I'm spoiled. And it seems to me, we can do even better in recruiting (maybe with the poor record maybe not at this time) but that also, it still seems like we're operating at a whole nuther level on offense vs the quantity and quality of defensive player recruits.

Sure hoping I'm wrong. As much as I love the spread I can still remember those vicious Miami teams of the 80s with a scary defense. That's what I'm hoping for.

Are either awesomely named, or their towns are awesomely named. Captain Shreve? Fontainebleau/ Bourgeois??

So Carvin has already defeated the Bourgeois? He's a hero of the revolution before he even goes to college.

A question for Paul and/or Tim...

When I watch the Inkster footage, Gardners's passing looks pretty awful. Not only is he inaccurate (most of the throws this this last game) but he regularly throws wobbly ducks (in other games) that would be easy INTs against BCS opponents. How does his passing compare to Denard's in your opinion? Denard, to me, seems to throw a much tighter ball. But it seems the general opinion is that he is more advanced than Denard in passing. Is it just about decision-making, reads, experience, etc?

While DG looks like an excellent runner, he doesn't seem to be quite as off-the-charts good as DR.

If DG isn't a better runner OR passer than DR, shouldn't the fanbase temper expectations about DG coming in and playing right away?

November 10th, 2009 at 1:02 PM ^

While I am nowhere near the level of expertise of Tim or Paul I will say if this is your first Devin Gardner highlight package yea, it might look that way. I've watched quite a few of DGs videos and to me the breakdown is like this: DR is faster, DG is shiftier, DG has a stronger arm, DG is more accurate, DG is bigger, DG has better reading/recognition skills.

DG is far and away the better quarterback but even in saying that he needs work to be impactful at the college level. He's a man amongst boys in HS and seems to have a great head on his shoulders. There's a reason that DR was a middling 3star and DG is the top QB prospect in the country (depending on who you listen to)

November 10th, 2009 at 2:46 PM ^

He was a big time recruit and wanted by Florida, but not to play QB.

DG's passing in that last game was not great. He still has a lot of work to do on his mechanics and accuracy. Redshirt.

Two questions:

1) Do you plan on going to the Spartanburg playoff games?

2) They made the playoffs at 3-8?? Did they just have an incredibly difficult strength of schedule or what?

Clarence Beeks

November 10th, 2009 at 1:56 PM ^

I'm not sure if we're going or not. The game is in Rock Hill, which is about an hour away, and well, Spartan High is terrible and Rock Hill is really good. I want to go to see how Jones is doing since I haven't been to a game in several weeks (we just bought a house and all time free time is going there right now). The answer to the question about the record is that everyone makes the playoffs, regardless of record. It's kind of an odd system, I know.

Seth

November 10th, 2009 at 1:58 PM ^

Every class or so I get excited about one recruit for reasons completely confounding conventional wisdom.

For some reason I fixate on some guy and think to myself that he will be really awesome, since nobody's talking about him or getting excited about him, or there's a big reason that everyone's knocking him, or we don't know anything about him. White guys from Ohio never make the list -- usually the dudes I fixate on are the exact opposite of white guys from Ohio, if there's any rhyme or reason to it.

Usually it's set off by hearing the guy did something incredibly "tough" his senior year.

It's not a perfect science, as exemplified by my past picks:

  • Vincent Smith
  • Sam McGuffie
  • (none in 2007)
  • Greg Banks
  • Mario Manningham
  • Keston Cheathem
  • Brandent Englemon
  • Carl Tabb

Now it's Carvin Johnson. I'm imagining him making huge knockout plays and playing in the NFL.

This doesn't mean anything. Just wanted to share.

I don't think McGuffie or Manningham really fit the criteria you laid out above. Just sayin.

But, I know what you mean though

Seth

November 11th, 2009 at 12:14 PM ^

yeah yeah yeah. With those two guys, I thought the consensus was that they were good but there was a major knock on them both for being too small to handle the Big Ten.

Which for McGuffie was absolutely right.

For Manningham, we seemed to have a lot of receivers already on the depth chart and though he was a 4-star, he was kind of an afterthought. Like nobody would have said "where's Manningham" if he hadn't been playing his freshman year.

mgovictors23

I was at that game and the Pionner quarterback just flat out couldn't get the ball to him deep. Ricardo would be wide open and the quarterback would just overthrow him so his stats could have been much better.

Great write up as usual, I just had a question/concern for anyone to answer. I love what DG brings to the table...does it look like he has those same long vince young strides? i mean, seriously, he looks just like him in HS.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OJWrqGnyc8

My questions? how does this translate in college? awesomeness right? -- other questions on DG as i haven't ever seen him play in real life. does his team run read option offense? does he have good ball fakes like juice? is he hard to bring down like TP and vince young were? that delivery is UGLY, can the coaches change that?

DG will be as effective as a runner as Tim Biakabatuka was against OSU and as effective as a passer as Chad Henne/Drew Henson/Tom Brady (in the NFL) combined.

Also he will ride into the stadium on a unicorn shooting rays of sunshine down from above so that no one will ever use the stupid logic "spread teams can't win in cold weather states" again. Also, he will retroactively give Nebraska a loss in 1997 and prove once and for all that under the sweatervest is just Jim Tressel's innards, hence he never is without it. HE. HAS. NO. TORSOSKIN. JUST COTTONYGOODNESS.
