Almost everyone on this team gets talked up at some point(lotta time from signing day until August), but there is 1 guy that I think has been nearly forgotten. Mike Shaw seems to be a forgotten man that some people have moving to the slot position. I disagree with this completely. I think Shaw could be a special player 1 that goes beyond just a starter or impact player. In the small bursts we saw of him last year gave I saw a guy that could change games like Reggie Bush. He played hurt and was still smooth as silk with the ball. I love Minor and think he will be our horse this year but in 2010 M. Shaw will burst upon the national scene and Heisman talk will surround him. Call me nuts if you want, just be kind. Let's bookmark this and plan a revisit in 16 months. Then we'll see if I'm Millen or Parcells.
The Heisman talk will have to wait until 2010, but Michael Shaw should have a breakout year in 2009. I believe he was playing with a hamstring injury last season, and therefore, we were not able to see his 'legendary' speed. After the first game when Carlos gets injured (made of glass), I think Shaw will be sharing the load with Minor.
Here's what they had to say about Shaw:
"Despite missing all of spring and continued questions about his health Shaw, if he is healthy will have to be the favorite for the third running back. Big reason, his speed which coaches completely expect to see in 2009.
In 2008, Shaw was basically hurt all year and that break-away speed was never on display. Coaches love V. Smith, but believe that Shaw gives them that game-breaking ability. If history repeats itself you have to assume either Minor or C. Brown will have injury issues and they want Shaw to be ready."
Maybe he is GBMW, he is in disguise. Seriously, many share his thought and have big hopes for Mr. Shaw. With all the talk about Denard and Tate everyone else seems to be getting short shrift.
No GBMW scouting report for me. Just some sweet memories from early in the year.
I know that GBMW is a punching bag around here, but you should link to that anyway.
Big things poppin', yo.
I thought everyone jumped Smith and Toussaint over him. I guess the Mgoblog nation is more aligned than I thought.
I don't recall anyone mentioning that he might be moved to slot. I do agree that much of the attention has been focused on the other RB's: Carlos Brown is healthy! Vincent Smith is Amazing!!, but like you guys said, I think he will have a solid year and step into a solid role next year.
CRAZY! While I think he'll be a good back, he hasn't shown anything close to getting "Heisman hype." I think its a tad early to be throwing out his name with the likes of reggie bush, who might be one of the most explosive players in the history of college football.
Love the pic. That girl is a smoke show.
Haha glad to see my efforts in locating that album have increased the "hotness" of this blog's pictures
I got a #20 jersey Hart's senior year, then Shaw got it the next, and i was excited, just think, in the Minnesota game, if he had been healthy, instead of getting taken down at the 20-something, he could've scored, not to mention the first touchdown of the year? he got it.
and he is FAST!
like DR fast, except 400 distance not 100.
i forget what it was, but he anchored his team in the 4x400 i think? and he had a crazy fast split, anybody know the specifics/has a link?
Shaw ran in the 4x400, but his best event was the 200. Last year, he was the national champ in the 200m.
I think Mike Shaw will be our #1 running back in 2010 and 2011.
"In 2008, Shaw was basically hurt all year and that break-away speed was never on display... If history repeats itself you have to assume either Minor or C. Brown will have injury issues and they want Shaw to be ready."
"I believe he was playing with a hamstring injury last season, and therefore, we were not able to see his 'legendary' speed. After the first game when Carlos gets injured (made of glass), I think Shaw will be sharing the load with Minor."
So, we're pointing out the injury-prone nature of Brown and Minor, and extolling the virtues of another player... who missed virtually an entire season being injured himself.
In the little game action Shaw had, he looked like a real difference-maker. Unfortunately, the only evidence of his durability we have so far indicates that it's not any different from Brown and Minor.
...wasn't he listed as a slot receiver by the COACHING STAFF this spring?
I realize he could be changed, and probably will. But, right now, I think it's a little much for you to be disagreeing with people who say he's a slot, given that's the position the coaching staff has him currently listed at.
And, it's also a little much for you to claim "nobody" is talking about him. Take GBMW, for example. This blog talks about him.
However, for the sake of the 2009 Michigan team, I think it's in our best interests if he gets around 5-10 touches a game as a change of pace back. Because if he does, he'll be way more effective, and it means that Brown and Minor are beating up the opposition in the running game.
I think he's always been listed at WR, even last year.
he was listed at slot last season also, but saw his time at RB.
