I've just realized that the last M coach to beat MSU in their first year was...
Superstition or not, this worries me greatly.
Brian had posted an article on the right hand navigation about that...so someone else realized it and wrote an article already (now with tables!).
Anyways, trends like that are stupid and meaningless. On the flip side of the coin, 1st year M coaches do very well against OSU...also meaningless.
Unless of course you are superstitious, like you said.
correlation =/= causation
Road victories against Sparty are usually (recent years notwithstanding) difficult. And I believe Lloyd, Mo, and Bo all had to face Sparty the first time while also being on the road. RichRod has to face Sparty for the first time at home, so I'm less worried about this than, say, the road game against Penn State.
Actually, Coach Mo's first MSU game was on the old artifical turf at the Big House. We were ranked #1 at the time.
You might remember the game. Something about a PI not called on Desmond on a 2-pt play. And, right before half, MSU's D stopped us cold from within the 3-yard on four plays!
That game still pisses me off.....more so than the Sparty Bob incident for some reason.
Plus, Desmond caught the ball on the 2-pointer. It absolutely should not have been ruled an incompletion.
In the last 50-some years, no first-year coach for either UM or MSU has won in the series . . . except in 1995 when two of them (Carr and Saban) went head-to-head.
Meanwhile, over the last 40+ years, EVERY first-year coach of UM and OSU has won in the series . . . except John Cooper (of course).
