ESPN is reporting that the Cleveland Browns are prepared to make a "Huge" offer to Scott Pioli of the New England Patriots. According to ESPN Pioli wants to bring in Kirk Ferentz as head coach. Now I like Ferentz just as much as the rest of the mgoblog community but I'm not sure he has what it takes to succeed in the NFL. Am I crazy?
Ferentz to the Cleveland Browns
What a horrible way to start 2009!
Doesn't mean he knows coaching talent. Pioli was hired by Belichick, not the other way around.
Although I'm inclined to doubt Ferentz succeeds in the NFL, who knows? If this rumor is true, we won't know for a couple of years anyway.
i just want shonn greene as far away from iowa city as possible before we go there next fall.
Did Herbstreit report that junk?
Kirk was a colleague of mine in the NFL, and I can tell you that he is a good coach and a wonderful person. His area of strength is in coaching offensive lineman, and I think that he has one of the best left sides to work with in football (Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach) if he goes to Cleveland. While he hasn't been as consistent as I thought he would be at Iowa, he certainly brought the program back to prominence in the conference during his time there, and I know that he has a great reputation in the coaching fraternity. It may not be the sexiest hire in the league if it happens, but he is solid and has paid his dues in the coaching profession.
Ferentz may be a good collegiate coach and an even better person, but does that make him ready to be a head coach in the NFL? Especially in Cleveland, where coaching careers go to die. Butch Davis had a ton of success while at Miami but he couldn't pull it off with the Browns. Even Nick Saban, who is a great college coach, didn't have to much success in the pros. Call me crazy, but I do not think the moderate success he has had at Iowa will transfer to the NFL.
Kirk Ferentz has been coveted by NFL GMs for a few years now. He was a former offensive line coach in the NFL. Of course he has the potential to do very well with the right franchise. If the two knitwits that are now running the Lions had any sense (which they probably don't), they would contact Ferentz and try to interview him.
coaching careers go to die. No head coach of the Lions has gone on to be a head coach ANYWHERE else.
Marinelli may have been the best actual coach the Lions have had in a looonngg time, but he was definitely over his skis as the head coach. I think he'd make a much better line coach or assistant head coach because he motivates so well. How could any coach keep his players from quitting on him after 0-8, much less 0-16.
Do people not know Ferentz was an assistant under Belicheck with the Browns in the 90's?
Yep. NFL GMs have wanted to hire him for a while now. I think he'd be great choice for HC in Detroit. Problem is, the Lions are going on the cheap right now and probably wouldn't pay his asking price. Plus, I doubt he'd want to work for Ding and Dong. (Mayhew & Lewand)
He was born in Detroit and raised in the Pittsburgh suburbs. While I think he wants to be a head coach in the NFL some day, this would be a horrible choice. Also, he would have to take a huge pay cut from his college gig to make this happen.
It would be a horrible choice for him to come to Detroit, but, a brilliant choice by MayWand to hire him, which is why there is no chance of it happening.
