REMEMBER THE NUMBER ONE RULE OF FALL ROSTER OVERANALYSIS: All weight gain or loss is good.
Now, ITEMS OF INTEREST!
Man we recruited some skinny corners. Terry Richardson is still scrambling to get up to 170 pounds, and while he's five pounds heavier than he was when he was a tiny tiny person in the spring game, you should take Terry Richardson and stretch him out a half-foot taller to get an idea of how thick Channing Stribling and Reon Dawson are. Jourdan Lewis isn't quite as extreme, but he has an inch or two on Richardson and just three pounds. Here are your redshirts, gentlemen.
On the other hand, Delano Hill comes in at the same 205 Thomas Gordon did and will probably stay within three pounds of that number for the duration of his career. Let's stop recruiting anyone from Cass Tech who's not a safety, but continue recruiting safeties.
Chris Fox is alarmingly big. 338 is not so good. Knee surgery is obviously a downer for fitness levels, but I'd be surprised if he was ready to compete for a starting job next year. He'll probably need two to round into shape.
Meanwhile in injured linemen who get too heavy, Chris Bryant is down about ten pounds from spring, which will help him see the field. Kalis and Braden are on the slow and steady gain track that generally indicates you're physically ready to see the field; would like to see Magnuson get into the 300 pound range; not sure what to make of LTT's additional 15 pounds from spring. Good or bad?
Just going by weights, if a freshman has to see the field it'll be Bosch or Kugler.
Derrick Green is 240. Would we like him to be 230 or 235 maybe? We'll have to wait until he shows something on the field to know. Shallman's actually three pounds lighter; Smith comes in at 224. The rest of the tailbacks are almost pound for pound where they were in spring.
Chesson continues to add weight. Up three from spring to 196; gain slowing down but still going. No other receivers changed significantly.
Funchess put some pounds on. Funchess is now up to 235, vaguely plausible as a blocker. Butt's already bigger, and Khalid Hill is a load at 258. That seems too big to me, but I did compare the guy to Lutzenkirchen, who was exactly that weight. Meanwhile AJ Williams is static at 265 after playing at 282 as a freshman.
The defensive line is growing slowly. No big move from Black, who adds two pounds to just pip Frank Clark in the race to not be the smallest starter on the defensive line. Eveyone else adds a few pounds; Ojemudia is up to 250 after starting last year at 223; Maurice Hurst comes in way more svelte than he was as a recruit at 270. They'll be putting weight on instead of taking it off.
Meanwhile, Pipkins is moving back up after dropping nearly 30 pounds last year.
James Ross lost weight. Merph. Desmond Morgan did too, but Morgan brings the heat on tackles and could stand to be a little more athletic. Ross had a bit of trouble getting big backs down last year and lost five pounds. In fact the only significant weight gains in the LB corps came from Allen Gant, who moved down from safety and is a very small SAM at 212, and Royce Jenkins-Stone, who added about 20 pounds from last year to actually surpass Ross.
Man we brought in some big linebackers. If Ben Gedeon is really 6'3", 236, and running 4.6 40s while lifting a billion pounds, Joe Bolden is going to have a fierce challenge as early as this year. After all the kerfuffle about McCray's weight, he checks in at a SAM-like 6'4", 237.
This has been Fall Roster Overanalysis. I hope you enjoyed it.
You missed some folks... where's Shane Morris?
No Poggi either.
Magnuson losing weight?? 285 aint cutting it, son.
Looks like AJ Williams is down to big TE size from OL size.
Stay away from the math, son. That stuff'll kill you.
Ben's mom is HOT!
Just wondering if you could quantify what 300 rage is? Are we talking Hulk levels yet? I know we've been getting linemen with a nasty streak, but that still seems a bit high for Magnuson to be aiming.
you don't happen to know how to get tix to that M @ RIT game do you?
They'll be available at https://www.rithockey.com/ but I don't believe they're going to be up for sale for at least another week. Season tickets go on sale 8/12 so I imagine it won't be too long after.
260 based on mgoblue.com Redshirt very likely
http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/henry_poggi_850862.html
Poggi is 6-4, 260.
I'm guessing the coaches want him a bit bigger regardless of where he plays.
Most of our DTs are around 300, except for Black who is at 278.
Shane Morris is listed at 201, so no surprise there. Henry Poggi (also not listed above) checks in at only 260, so his chances of redshirting have gone from likely to almost certain.
Derrick Green at 240... IDK about that being a good thing. I believe he can be an impact RB at that weight when I see evidence of it.
In fairness, though, Carlos Hyde does look like he's lost a little weight in the offseason:
And asks that it be marked "Exhibit A"
Thank goodness. I feel much better knowing he can run over a flat footed motionless 175lb HS DB.
Is a 3/4 star safety committed to UVA.
Jehuu Caulcrick 6-0 260 now an NFL FB
If these guys represent the floor for green, i'll take it. I'm just looking at these guys as the expected outcome.
Are clarret/TJ Ducket/Ron Dayne the ceiling? I hope so
The interior D-line is pretty stacked, so if Poggi plays it will be at SDE. I don't think he practiced yesterday but I'll ask about him in the coming weeks.
Is Wormley looking like a 3-tech or SDE?
Coming off an ACL injury carrying a lot of weight. I'm not saying he got fat, but if all he could do was lift upper body and rehab, he's got a very different body than he did pre-injury.
If he can be effective at about 6'6" and 290... well..... Julius Peppers anyone?
He's been practicing at SDE.
One name missing from the Fall Hype Machine (FHM - Trademarked!) is David Dawson. Is he such a lock to Redshirt? He just always seemed to be highlighted as "college-ready" IIRC - seems incongruous with scouting reports that he would seem to just disappear this fall.
Don't get me wrong - I like being able to stockpile talen - but just surprised there hasn't been much buzz about Dawson like we've seen from other incoming recruits.
I think the assumption is that OL players all redshirt. Even with the need last year and Kalis being billed as college ready, at least physically, he still redshirted. Hopefully Kalis and Braden are an upgrade and Dawson doesn't seem as ready as Kalis was last year, so I would be shocked if he didn't redshirt.
maybe more will come out of Fall camp - but I just remember there being "buzz" about last year's OL freshman - how they looked physically and early returns once on campus.
He just had a ton of hype it seemed last year and now nada. I was eager to see how he fit into the longer term plans - but even recent projections seem to have him on the outside looking in.
...but he's still a DB on the roster.
From what I know, they did make the move. He's a SAM. I'll ask about him Thursday.
Get it together bro! (slaps myself for even joking in that manner). No need to ask, but I do wonder why he's a SAM and not a WILL. Especially with Poole out this year and the fact that he's SS size. #CamGordonEffect I suppose.
It's perfectly fine to criticize Magnus, but there are constant straw men thrown around where he's concerned. I don't agree with everything he says, either, but do you really have to be dishonest about his arguments?
It's 4 inches, and yes I think that's a big difference. There are a lot of short, stout RBs, but precious few 6'3" and over RBs, regardless of weight. It was my impression that Magnus had a bigger problem with his height than his weight.
4 inches, sorry - saw Green listed as 6'0" somewhere, but obviously not on the official roster. But I asked Magnus way back when that specific question - are a few extra inches in height the difference maker? - and he insisted it wasn't, it was other things (that were keeping Shallman from being a HB). But then he said it wasn't the weight either. So it must just have been athletic ability/measurables. But then he said it wasn't the measurables. So who the f knows.
This has gotten off track - My point is Magnus talks in circles and he's not to be taken seriously.

If you want to say that I talk in circles, why don't you talk about how you make things up to try to take shots at me?
When you asked me that question, I believe that I said it was a combination of things. You're right that it's not JUST his height. It's also not JUST his weight. It's also not JUST his athleticism. Combine all of those things...and you've got a pretty good argument about him becoming a feature back.
I guess time will tell.

Here's everything substantial I've written about Shallman on TTB. Please show me evidence that anything you're saying is based on anything I've written:
