Sorry no Dear Diary this week -- was on a family trip through yesterday. Related: shout-out to the Michigan Ski Team -- I was that one guy at Crystal with the kickin'  Fischer demos and a way of swinging my arms while carving that looks like I'm shtupping a donkey (thanks, cock-ass Winter Walden instructor in 1991).

Instead, I give you three new columns to the instant classic "Clans" breakdown by MVictors, Lew, and the Hoover Street Rag, referenced atop Tuesday's "Unverified Voracity" column. The new categories:

  • Favorite Pre-Game Tradition
  • Where to Watch an Away Game
  • Every Michigan Fan Should Read...

Comments and suggestions for additional categories are very welcome. Chart made available on Google Docs if you want to make changes yourself (note them in the comments).

Enjoy. Update 6:30 p.m. songs now available too.

Clan  Favorite Pre-Game Tradition Where to Watch an Away Game Every Michigan Fan Should Read...
Bo Clan (15%) We barbecued these same ribs back in '73, an' I tell ya the stadium looks different and some o' th' buildings, but this spot hasn't changed a damn bit. At home, with EVERYBODY over. This is the couch where we watch MICHIGAN football. Later in the year the wife makes chili. Those Who Stay, by Curt Stephenson
The Rebellion (9%) Beer Pong or 'U Honk We Drink' on the porch of a State St flophouse. In the basement (because too emotional to watch with everyone upstairs) with laptops on their knees for Live-Blogging. The Decimated Defense, by Misopogon
Corduroy Jacket w/ Patch Clan (1%)  Kerrytown Farmer's Market - it's so nice and peaceful downtown when all those football fans are at the game, isn't it? Oh there's a game today? Are we good this year? How 'bout we take a walk in the Arb instead -- it's so lovely when the leaves change. Fired Magic: Detroit's Pewabic Pottery Treasures, by Marcy Heller Fisher
In Rod We Trusted (5%) Standing atop the little garden outcropping at Blimpy Burger and trying to engage the sadly misinformed Cotton Pickers waiting in line in an RR versus Carr debate. At the Bo Clan guy's house, trying to convince everybody that THIS win over Notre Dame is going to be the start of something special. As RR becomes less defensible late in the year, take an increasing interest in the chili. Denard: The Happening, by mdoc, or The Big Rodriguez, by Brian Cook
Lloyd Loyalists (20%) The Broken Egg - we've been meeting here for breakfast every year since senior year, which was [1997+/- 3 years]. Local sports bar. Pray a member of the Rebellion comes in so you can kick his ass. The Obscene Diaries of a Michigan Fan, by Craig Ross
Cotton Pickin’ Blues (45%) The Golf Course. At the home of the guy with the big TV sometimes if there's only going to be a few people over, but otherwise at home to facilitate that 3rd quarter nap. If These Walls Could Talk: Michigan Football Stories from the Big House, by Jon Falk and Dan Ewald
Fierce Pragmatists (1%) Dragging Misopogal to a different tailgate every week in the bare hopes of finding another Fierce Pragmatist, as opposed to the millions of Rebels and Rod-Trusters who think they're Fierce Pragmatists Refreshing on the iPhone while stuck in Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur/Wife's Stupid Cousin's wedding. Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace
The Second Estate (1.5%) Giving the kids the insider passes so they can do the field tour during warmups, while you hold court in the important people rooms where everybody can see that you're an important person.

The TV room of the cottage on Walloon Lake or Lake Charlevoix

(HT: Feaster18)

Bo's Lasting Lessons: The Legendary Coach Teaches the Timeless Fundamentals of Leadership, by Bo Schembechler and John U. Bacon
The Decatur Clan (2.5%) Covering yourself in maize and walking down Hoover with the throngs all the way to the stadium, then turning back up to State St. and doing it all over again. In West Lafayette, or East Lansing, or Columbus, or Evanston, or wherever the Wolverines may travel - probably next to Lloyd Brady. 100 Things Michigan Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die, by Angelique Chengelis

And with hats a-tippin' to the folks below, here's the music (after the leapin'):

Clan  Favorite Song Money Quote
Bo Clan Across 110th Street Instrumental (aka The old Michigan Replay Theme), by J.J. Johnson and His Orchestra "Michigan Replay, with Bo Schembechler and Larry Adderley."
The Rebellion A Better Son/Daughter, by Rilo Kiley "The lows seem so extreme that the good seems fucking cheap, and it teases you for weeks in its absence."
Corduroy Jacket w/ Patch Clan A Toast to Michigan, by Louis Elbel "To the corn-flow'r and the maize, Autumn skies and haze, Alma Mater."
In Rod We Trusted Flash Delirium, by MGMT Even if this hall collapses, I can stand by my pillar of hope; it's just a case of Flash delirium. Here's a growing culture deep inside a corpse."
Lloyd Loyalists One Good Year, by Russell Crowe "It’s New Years Day just like the day before. Same old skies of grey, same empty bottles on the floor. Another years gone by, and I was thinking once again, 'How can I take this losing hand and somehow win?'"
Cotton Pickin’ Blues Won't Get Fooled Again, by The Who "Change it had to come, we knew it all along. We were liberated from the fall that's all. But the world looks just the same. And history ain't changed 'Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war."
Fierce Pragmatists Still Alive, by Jonathan Coulton (ending credits of Portal) "Now these points of data make a beautiful line. And we're out of beta, we're releasing on time. So I'm GLaD. I got burned, think of all the things we learned, for the people who are still alive."
The Second Estate Don't Stop [Thinking About Tomorrow], by Fleetwood Mac "If you wake up and don't want to smile, if it takes just a little while, open your eyes and look at the day; you'll see things in a different way."
The Decatur Clan Love the One You're With, by Crosby, Stills & Nash "Don't be angry, don't be sad, don't sit crying over good times you've had. There's a girl right next to you and she's just waiting for something to do."

Hmmm. Not sure where I fit in

Hmmm. Not sure where I fit in on these descriptions of Saturday afternoons.

Edit: I don't golf so I guess I pregame with the rebellion with a In Rod We Trusted for game time. Also, add a rage filled howling at the moon for postgame and I am down.

A massive kudos to whomever

A massive kudos to whomever put "A Better Son/Daughter" by Rilo Kiley as the official song of the Rebellion.  Well struck.

Well...

Now that you put it that way...

I'm half Fierce Pragmatist, half Rebellion, a sprinkle of Cotton Pickin' Blues.

When in Ann Arbor, I love tailgating at the golf course.  Getting there bright an early ensures a quality spot on the fairway.

When watching at home, it's ususally in front of the TV at home scaring the dog by cheering so loud, with laptop teetering precariously on the edge of the sofa, live blogging, texting "hugs" whenever Michigan scores a TD.  (We used to watch games at the alumni bar, but STL didn't have a strong showing so that scared us to watching at home, someone please tell me I'm wrong!).

There will never be a 3rd quarter nap, ever.

As for books, I have a bunch I need to read, but have read Jon Falk's book.

I'm a Lloyd Loyalist (didn't

I'm a Lloyd Loyalist (didn't set foot on campus until 2003 though) but I watched games like a member of The Rebellion.  Only instead of going to the basement, I conditioned the dogs to retreat to the basement when they heard the ESPN intro music.

Also I normally bonded with RR supporters by discussing how we should come together as a fan base and lynch Bill Martin.  I found this idea to transcend the clan civil war normally.

So basically you're proposing we invade Mexico to kick out France's puppet dictator?
(sorry, this happens from time to time.)

Me too

But with a big helping of Bo clan in it. (I wonder if that's the case for a lot of people who either overlapped Bo and Mo or Mo and Lloyd, or were just there when Mo was). Don't really understand all the infighting between those groups.  I could see the Rod/pre-Rod stuff, even if it seemed detrimental ("it was all the other guy's fault!!").  But really, to me it was just an evolution of the tree.  Other than Harbaugh (went with frankly a better qualified candidate familiar with the staff at the time), and Miles (do the Bo loyalists really want to ignore the sleaze and still call themselves Bo guys?), has there really been that much dissing of the past? Lloyd wasn't some guy Mo brought in...Bo did, and Bo completely supported him. Heck, our current coach was brought in by Mo, not Lloyd.  But no one says "CONSPIRACY" about a "Carr-Tel" with Moeller, because all you end up with is a "Moe-Tel".

Everyone still thinks they're a pragmatist. I'll admit I'm part of the Rebellion. The home/away game traditions sound exactly right to me.

You're a better man than most

This-

as opposed to the millions of Rebels and Rod-Trusters who think they're Fierce Pragmatists

Was so spot on, it made the article on it's own (even if the rest hadn't been great too).  It sounds cool to be in that category, but the words of most betray them.

Dead on...

Absolutely perfect...with one little exception:  I'd change that Second Estate away game location from Houghton Lake to Walloon Lake or Lake Charlevoix.  Walloon is the home of Michigania, and therefore, it is favored location of a couple of these groups, but the Second Estate in particular.

...after living on State St. for most of my 8 year UM career and then burying myself in my room during away games to LiveBlog and yell at the tv... couldn't describe me better in terms of UM fan clan-ness...

God's gift to ballroom notoriety

Seriously, tootin' my own horn aside, how many people the last few years have referred to that, even if it doesn't necessarily mean what they think it means.

FTR: They're huge.

Just don't be there at 3,6,9, or 11. Those are my bathroom breaks from dumpster diving. I usually stroll over into those bushes for a little privacy.

Civil War

I think the only really deep divide that needs to be healed is Lloyd Loyalists vs The Rebellion/In Rod We Trusted.  That's been my experience, anyway.  I feel mostly like a Bo, plus Rebellion/IRWT hybrid.  My reaction was, "No OMG No Hoke!" until the presser.  He won me over emotionally, i.e. I support him all the way, but I still am not convinced he is the answer until I see the product on the field.

Home games: either don't tailgate or do so at Pioneer.  Always in my seat in time to see the team warm up.

Away games: in front of my TV or my daughter's (her screen is bigger).  Went to Indiana last year and the wife and I are convinced 1 away game a year will be fun.

Book: With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa, Eugene Sledge.  (Bo/RR hybrid = USMC grit/aggression/innovation.)

Poll?

A poll of mgoblog readers to see what clan they identify with would be interesting.

There are too many different type of fans in this poll

Shouldn't it just be the Bo Clan, RRod defenders and Cotton Pickin' Blues? Perhaps you can include Jacket and Patch Clan as well.

Not being Jewish is really hurting my pragmatist cred.  Conversion here I come!

Yeah, no kidding

I really think I'm a pragmatist, but I'm not Jewish.  It also looks like I have to start going to tailgates with Misopogal too.  Man, my wife is going to be pissed off.

I did refresh my phone during my cousin's wedding though.  Oh wait . . . she's not Jewish either.  I think I have clan confusion syndrome.

An Observation

board popularity != insight; //other than as relates directly to board popularity.  The immediate poster's avatar displays "...Aint Sh[!]"  I would like to believe my fellow Michigan ALUMS might justifiably take issue with that.

I wouldn't think so...

This is a Michigan fan blog, and if that's not enough, my avatar is clearly in jest.

The OP above, whose comment was edited, has been posting inappropriate and unwarranted euphemisms for Coach Hoke.

If you take issue with my avatar, then you would certainly take issue with the poster above's comments.

The Actual Facts

No editing occurred on this poster's part; the original post remains in tact at this node.  Nor have I posted "euphemisms" of any sort let alone in connection with Coach Hoke.  I do take issue with MGoShtoink for an avatar that is unworthy of a Michigan graduate however.

he was talking about St Barth

he was talking about St Barth who posted inappropriate comments about Hoke, and how could you think that a little joke is something to be ashamed of. Especially since you are also a Michigan fan

How?  I enjoyed entirely positive points until a single statement having nothing whatsoever to do with my alma mater, The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, got perceived wrongly by a few who instituted negBangRape.  So much for your "little jokes."  Yet, with so many URLs at my disposal, frankly Scarlet I don't [strike that and insert "wish I didn't"] give a [derp].  No matter what I am third generation, Go Blue.

It wasn't TOTALLY your fault.

It seems only a tenth of the neg-bang came from that "single statement," or more specifically your little political aggravator thrown in at the end. The rest came as you followed up with more politics and name-calling. Judging from the replies in that thread, your point total seems to be about 5 percent people who disagree with your politics, 35 percent people who just want you to keep them to yourself, and 60 percent folks responding to you being an asshole about it.

So....I guess that means 95 percent of your negbang was due to factors under your control. I'll refund you the other 5 percent (about 30 points), so you can stop blaming the board for negBangRape. The rest, if you're interested, you'll have to get back by following the board protocols and being respectful to others.

That's

The nicest thing anyone's ever said about me on here.

But if you really think on BRIAN'S website that you can't criticize Hoke, you must really be on something. But acting childish has gotten people -10,000 slams.  It not what you say, but how you say it.

Ahh, Michigan skiing

Looks like Winter Park is going to get another 4-6 tomorrow. Maybe I should take the day off and head up.

Why do I live in Colorado? Because it's just like Michigan, except the weather's warmer and the skiing's better.

I got it

So I'm part of the 5% of the fan base that understands football.   That seems about right.

Since my franchise has folded I want you to know that I am weighing my offers and will air my "decision" on ESPN later this week.    I like what I hear from the Rebellion, I can go back to my Lloyd Loyalists group and go back to defending Lloyd's record by including his success against top 10 teams, the SEC,  Cooper and then go game by game thru the Tressel years picking out 1 or 2 plays we were screwed out of that flipped the game.

Lot of money in some of those other groups so I'm open to dealership cars, cottages etc...

Where will I take my fan "talents" to?  Tune into ESPN on Friday at 9:00

Sincerely

Terrell James

Isn't everyone here almost by definition a member of the rebellion?  I mean the first word of the discription is "bloggers"
