Exit Trey Burke Comment Count

Brian

As was virtually certain since the moment Trey Burke didn't enter last year's NBA draft, Trey Burke has entered the 2013 NBA draft.

There was exactly one thing left for Burke to do in college—win the national title—after he collected every player of the year award available and hit an audacious 30-footer to tie Kansas. This is like Woodson's departure save for the outcome o the last game: we wish you'd stay, kid, but we know you should go.

Michigan now turns to Spike Albrecht and incoming top-50 recruit Derrick Walton at the point; they're waiting on NBA decisions from Tim Hardaway Jr., Mitch McGary, and Glenn Robinson III. Those have to be made by the 28th.

he could do in college.  As for "winning a national title,"  that's out of his control.  He and his teammates made the plays to win the national title game but egregiously poor officiating changed the outcome of the game.  Unfortunately, refs and sometimes luck often determine the official outcome of a game.

Trey Burke set an amazing example, for all college athletes looking to go pro, how important it is to value player development.  By returning to school for his Sophmore year his stock shot way up and he has positioned himself to have the best possible chance at a very productive NBA career.

I'm still ashamed of myself for secretly hoping Charles would stay to make another run at a championship.  So this time, just thank you and all the best.

I just watched those highlight videos that were made for each round of the tournament.

I think I figured out the reason I took the L'ville loss so hard and it still burns every time I think about it...not only the loss, but it's because I truly enjoyed watching THIS team. I loved the Fab 5, but this team may be my all-time favorite.

They just did everything the right way, they played so damn hard and played to their ability. All of the side stories...sons of NBA players, Burke's return, the Canadian, little Spike, McGary's rise, Coach B's journey, everything.

I'm sure some of you have an all-time favorite TV series that you LOVED watch, even dedicated yourself to watching. When it was over, you're kind of like...wow, this is sad, but damn that was awesome.

That's the feeling I get with this team. They lost, the game's over, it hurts, so what. I'm more upset that I'll never get a chance to see this particular group play again. They were both fun and fundamental. They were shooters and dunkers. They were offense and defense.

What a ride this season was. Thanks again to Trey, but more so thanks again to the entire team. It was an honor and a pleasure to watch this team pour there hearts our, watch them improve, watch them struggle and watch them succeed.

I'm excited for next year, but I'll never forget this year. Go Blue, forever.

Burke was fantastic this year and last.  I rarely watch the NBA, but when I do it is to watch a Michigan player play for a few minutes when I catch him playing while flipping channels.  While it helps to win championships, or play for them, I think the NBA benefits by having players play in college as long as possible.  I know who Burke is because he stayed a second year.  I know Hardaway, Glen Rice, Chris Webber, Robert Tractor Taylor (RIP), Maurice Taylor and others because they actually played for Michigan for more than a year.  I believe it was Jamal Crawford (?) who was drafted in the first round after playing only a year for Michigan.  I had a busy year that year and I still don't know who he is.  Burke made himself the POY and helped get his team to the championship game.  I might even set my DVR to see him play sometime in the NBA (especially if he becomes a Piston.)

Trey really had to go; he will get a 40-year head start on the average college graduate.  I am just happy we got a second year to watch him grow as a player.  Wouldn't it be great if he ended up going #1?

I hate the NBA - but now I will follow whatever team drafts Trey. My kids will wear the #3 jersey with pride. Thanks for memories - what a ride.

Let's say we do decide to retire his jersey (let's ignore the whole diploma issue for the time being)...when does that happen? Like 5...10 years? After Trey's NBA career? Does it like happen next year?

Any insight on this?

Thank you for NOT going to PSU! Thank you for decidiing to come back for your Sophomore season, and for all of the wonderful memories... You always carried yourself with integrity and represented the University well.

Start working on convincing those Freshman to stick with the program for another year or two!

Does anyone have any insight as to how the conversation between Burke (or any player) and the coaches would go when evaluating the decision to leave school early for the pros?  I mean does JB and Bacari make an appeal for Burke to stay in school or is it a more "what's in the best interests" type of conversation where everyone involved quickly reach the conclusion that Trey has accomplished everything he can in college?

I'd love to be a fly on the wall during these meetings to see what exactly is discussed.
