Exit Trey Burke
As was virtually certain since the moment Trey Burke didn't enter last year's NBA draft, Trey Burke has entered the 2013 NBA draft.
There was exactly one thing left for Burke to do in college—win the national title—after he collected every player of the year award available and hit an audacious 30-footer to tie Kansas. This is like Woodson's departure save for the outcome o the last game: we wish you'd stay, kid, but we know you should go.
Michigan now turns to Spike Albrecht and incoming top-50 recruit Derrick Walton at the point; they're waiting on NBA decisions from Tim Hardaway Jr., Mitch McGary, and Glenn Robinson III. Those have to be made by the 28th.
Thanks for the memories.
and thank you!
Instantly my favorite nba player. Good luck dude!
is totally worth the memories he created for us fans. Thank you, Trey. Who knows, maybe we will be seeing him quite a bit in the near future throwing up alley oops to Drummond.
Thank you Trey for 2 outstanding years at Michigan. Thank you for returning for this years run a NC. Good luck in the NBA, as sad as it is to see athletes leave Michigan you deserve much success at the next level. I know I will be rooting for you next year no matter where you land.
Farewell... Amen.
& Trey. No's 33 & 3...
Pick #3!
It'd be a lot less painful to see him go if I didn't hate the NBA so much. I can watch the later rounds of the playoffs, but that is about all I can take.
YOU ON
Godspeed.
Go get paid young man. You've earned it. Thanks for everything, Trey.
Good luck Trey! Thanks for the memories and turning a whole new generation of Wolverines on to Michigan basketball!
We'll always have Kansas. Best of luck in the NBA.
Hang up the 3 as well
The league will belong to Trey and Kyrie in about 3 years. Bank on it...
Making a dude tear up. We love you, Trey. Go kill it in the NBA. You deserve it.
Thanks for the Final Four run this year and the Big Ten regular season last year. It's been a pleasure watching you play. Best of luck in the NBA!
Best of luck to Trey . . . you've done us proud. The 2012 Big Ten Championship and 2013 Final Four banners will testify to your impact here.
Thank you Trey! Going to have to watch the NBA more now.
Hate to see you go, man, but understandable. Best wishes, and don't forget your alma mater!
Regarding the rest of the group, I'm not really waiting on their NBA decisions. I consider them back until they say otherwise. Maybe naive on my part.
GO BLUE!
Make that money Trey!
As one Wolverine commits, another leaves.
Trey, thank you for your season as the #1 PG and player in college basketball. Thanks for pushing us to the #1 ranking this year, to taking the Fresh Five in summer workouts and demanding excellence right off the bat.
Thanks for the gutsy shots at OSU and Arky, even if they didn't fall. Thanks for fearlessly leading us into #3 Indiana, Assembly Hall rocking, and just stuntin on em that night. For stealing one against MSU, swiping the victory from Craft and OSU, from repping U of M like a class athlete should - not one misstep or disciplinary problem.
Every time you spotted up beyond the arc I knew it was going in before it even left your hands.
Thanks man. For being the best UM basketball player in a generation. For taking a chance on the school you grew up thinking was the enemy.
A true Michigan Man
Would be nice for his salary to start with a $2
it's not all it's cracked up to be...
...farewell, and Go Blue.
for making UofM basketball and now the NBA relevant for me again! Hail, Hail ...
...best choice for him. He deserves his shot at the League and I'm confident he'll seize it with both hands. Fundamentals, always fundamentals.
Thank you, Trey.
Knowing you continue to rock it in the Nba.
Such a pleasure watching you as a fan.
Thank you for bringing us back to a level of respect and excitement we haven't seen for a while in basketball. Godspeed.
Really such a dilemma for the athletic department. Do you retire his number? Good arguments for both sides. Tough call. I just hope we don't get a gigantic patch on anyone wearing the number 3 jersey. Retire it, or don't retire it - don't try and find a middle ground.
That's not going to happen in basketball. Not only are there a lot more available numbers (with only 13 guys on the team), but in basketball the custom has been to retire the "jersey" but not the number.
Personally, I'll be 100% behind raising his jersey to the rafters if/when he graduates. I think having a graduation requirement for that kind of thing is a good incentive for these guys to come back and finish up their studies. Most basketball players - even guys that earn millions - will eventually need to do something else professionally to support themselves down the road.
I think there's a very easy solution for retiring the shirts of student-athletes that don't graduate but deserve it. The university often gives honorary doctoral degrees (Humane Letters, Engineering, Science, Fine Arts, Law) for VIPs every commencement cerimony. I'm sure there is a way for university higher uppers to create an additional honorary Michigan degree (Masters of Athletics or Gymnastics or something) for the ones who deserve to have their jerseys/numbers retired. They can do it around the retirement period (which tends to be way after actual graduation) and this would be quite rare so I don't think standard "devaluation of degree" arguments apply.
For everything Trey. Good luck and God Bless. Live your dream Michigan Man.
We appreciate you coming back & wish you the best of luck!
I'm here for the POSBANG. Not that he's gone, but that he's done so much. This thread doesn't get me down. It makes me love our program all the more. What a player! What determination and hard work he put in! What sacrifice for his sport/profession, for his teammates, and for the university.
I can't wait to see his Final Four banner raised - and then his uniform number raised. #3 banner has to happen.
And, with all that said, I hope to God the Pistons draft him and pair him with thier big men, moving Knight to SG. While a short guard tandem, I think that would be an excellent move. And of course, I want Burke to play on a team I love and can easily follow. He will be my new favorite NBA player, for sure.
I'd be upset if he stayed to be honest. As much as i want to see what this team could be with him next year, he had to go. Thank you Trey for a memorable season.
And God bless. Go Blue!
It's been a great experience as a fan to get to watch #3 for the last 2 seasons. I hope Trey has a long and successful NBA career.
This is the first one of these over the past few years where I'm thinking to myself "yes, that is exactly the right decision." When Manny left and when Darius left I thought they both made bad decisions (for themselves) but this one is a no-brainer.
Sadly (for me as a Michigan fan) I think we're going to get three and maybe even four more of these over the next couple of weeks.
Four more of these? What, is Spike leaving the team to pursue Kate Upton?
Good one.
No I simply overestimated my fear level by one player.

Three more to NBA, one other to random transfer is likely attrition.
Thank you Trey for two of the most memorable basketball seasons in recent memory. You are, and always will be, a true Michigan Man.
Go Blue. #3 is yours forever.
I wish you great success in the NBA.
Thank you for everything Trey. I'm sad to see him go but I have the utmost respect in his decision to leave early for the NBA.
It sucks that he is leaving, wish him all the best.. I can see the rest of B1G teams having a big relief today since they dont have to deal with him next year....
Def can say that Trey Burke put Mich BB back on the board, we are relevant again.
I remember those YouTube videos of Trey working out before he came to UM. That was the first inkling for me that we had something special on our hands. And guess what, Trey? All the hard work paid off. Congrats to you. Thanks for representing the UM family so brilliantly.
Since the Bad Boys/Bird/Magic era, NBA basketball has been my least favorite pro sport. However, I may want to watch it again just to see Burke play.
I am really happy for Trey. He made the right choice.
Now it's time for Walton and/or Spike to step up like a certain 3 star recruit did two years ago.
Go Blue!
