Exit Kam Chatman Comment Count

Ace

According to a report from ESPN's Jeff Goodman, junior forward Kam Chatman is expected to transfer out of the program.

Chatman was ranked as a top-30 prospect coming out of high school, but other than that one moment of glory against Indiana, he never made the expected impact.

That doesn't mean Chatman's departure won't hurt, though. Michigan now has two open scholarship spots for 2016-17 and no obvious candidates among either grad transfers or late-rising 2016 recruits to fill them. Barring a late addition, this puts a lot of pressure on DJ Wilson to become a viable backup at the four, where Zak Irvin is once again going to have to log the vast majority of his minutes.

UPDATE: Multiple outlets have confirmed Chatman has been granted his release and will transfer.

UPDATE 2: It's officially official.

"Kam is a wonderful young man with the potential to mature into a fine college player," said Beilein. "We have enjoyed coaching him over the past two years and wish him nothing but the best."

"I honestly don't think I could have had a more quality life experience than I did in Ann Arbor," said Chatman. "I am incredibly grateful for my two years at Michigan. I would like to thank Coach Beilein and his entire staff for taking a chance on a small town kid out of Portland. I know my experience has inspired others as I will take all of my lessons learned to continue my pursuit of becoming the best man and player I can. Go Blue!"

Sigh.. I still had high hopes for chatman. He really started to come on late in the season defensively and shooting.. I hope beilein knows what he's doing.. The next person out the door if the below average results continue will be him..

Since "developed" is a thing used to describe JB by the fans, perhaps any guy who does good = "developed" properly and any guy who transfers or doesn't pan out = didn't have the desire to be "developed".

This is a shame, I had high hopes for him and was hoping he'd eventually turn it around and make an impact, best of luck to him and hope he finds a good mid-major home.

If Kam hadn't made that game winner against Indiana, propelling us to the tourney, this thread would be a lot uglier. Yes, he showed flashes of "putting it together" but he was so inconsistent that this could be addition by subtraction. If we take a flyer on the Greek Freak & bring in another Caris-type sleeper, we will look back on this exit as a positive.

Am I wrong in thinking that this amount of attrition on a college basketball team is kinda high? Doesn't it reflect poorly upon the coaches? When it's a player or two, we blame the player. When it's 4 players, does that pendulum of blame move closer to the coaching staff?

If you are a highly ranked athletes I don't know why you would come to play for Beilein. His system doesn't suit those type of players.

No this is silly. As if Beilein's system somehow makes people less athletic? Or, even weirder, Beilein deliberately minimizes athletic advantage? No scheme does that. Look no further than GRIII for an elite athlete able to exploit that athleticism (even more so than is actual basketball skills). Imagine if he stayed one more year with Levert (and worked on his handle and shot?).

U don't want to go throwing scholarships at just anyone because then we are in the same spot we are now in two years. Quality over quantity. If the staff feels the taking a flyer on the "Greek Freak's" brother is a good move, I support that. I just hope that we get the right guy(s), not just a guy.
