Exit Jabrill Peppers, Per Report Comment Count

We don't usually put "per report" in these titles but this is on the borderline between solid and, uh, not solid. So take it in that spirit. Per Darren Heitner, citing agent sources:

While sources have indicated that Peppers and Butt are definitely signing with Sexton and Collins, only a few days ago Peppers stated that he was undecided as to whether he would be leaving Michigan.

"I still don't know what I'm going to do yet," he said. "I've got some decisions to make."

That's a hell of a hedge with your final two sentences in an article headlined "Jabrill Peppers going pro," but Sam Webb retweeted it so good enough for me. Jabrill Peppers off to the first round of the draft, where he will create one more burst of "LOL OVERRATED I CAN'T SPELL BANANNANA" tweets before embarking on a long and excellent NFL career.

Update:

So that's why I put report in the title. Probably a distinction without a difference.

UPDATE UPDATE:

Especially after seeing Jake Butt tear an ACL... I feel so bad for Jake. He's a tenacious guy, and I'm sure he'll make it in the NFL. The problem is his draft stock will fall. What a shame. The bright light is al the young studs waiting in the wings to bring 2017 into full swing. Let's finish this recruiting class and have a badass spring!

Dear Mr. Peppers,

I'd dearly love for you to return for your senior season.  You would start the year in the top shelf of Heismann candidates, and the Michigan D would be a monster.  I totally understand how bad it sucks to never beat OSU or play in a Bowl game, and I'd love for you to come back just for that.

Let's get real, though.  You are already a top of the first round draft pick.  That is as good as it's likely to get for your rookie contract.  You should take the risk free option to take care of your family right now.  I have only two more words for you: Marcus Lattimore.

Your devoted fan.

with Michigan's secondary if Clark had remained healthy for the season. I think we would be looking at a different seasonal end than 10-3 with Superman at Viper and Jordan Lewis defending slot receivers and Clark on the outside against big receivers downfield.

There is no doubt this seasonal end was disappointing. And I just wonder if Clark had not been hurt, how things might have changed. And the thing is, greater success would have made everyone's choices a no-brainer. So there is that.

I'll get killed for saying this but, in 10 years we'll barely remember him.

Played 2 years, no bowls, had 1 INT, no real signature moments, was a run stuffing safety/LB hybrid that returned some kicks.  Mostly racked up stats against our poorer opponents.  IMO, never lived up to his hype.  Maybe the hype was impossibly big.

We'll see where he goes in the draft.  I'd be very surprised if he went first 2 rounds.  He's a small LB, and a safety with marginal coverage skills.  His career will largely be determined by who drafts him and if they use him correctly.

I am curious what insurance policies are available. If there was a good enough policy ($20 million if injured?) I could see JB coming back. Why? Pride!! No OSU win, no Big 10 championship, no bowl game. He definitely has "unfinished business."

I find it ironic how 90% of the fans (that LOVE college football) are all like TAKE THE MONEY!!!

Truth is the insurance policies offer life-changing cash regardless and another year of college, returning UM to glory, and winning the Heisman are all things that will serve his passion for life forever and cannot be bought.  Peppers is smart enough to realize this, we all know he is an extraordinarly gifted human in many ways.  He surely recognizes the lost opportunity cost of leaving is actually pretty extreme and the only real benefit to leaving is getting paid one year earlier.

I think the bottom line is Peppers will go where ever he mentally sees himself competing next year.  If he sees the winged helmet, he returns, if he craves the next level, he goes.  That is the key question, not the money.

I put it at 65/35 he returns and think folks should appreciate just how special our university and football program are, this is exactly the circumstance where that makes a difference.

the "just take the freaking money!" crowd originates from the average person's (incorrect) belief that winning the lottery increases happiness.

Sure, he can leave, make a lot of money, and go on to have an excellent or even great NFL career. It would be a perfectly respectable decision. But he will not be a "Michigan legend" in this case. I don't mean this as a slight but only as a fact. His name will not be uttered in the same breath as Charles Woodson & Desmond Howard. If he comes back, however, he has the best shot of anyone in a very long time to do that. And do you think Woodson & Howard would trade anything for their place in the pantheon of Michigan football?

I'm surprised this is still up. Or at least the title changed to "Fake News: Peppers denies report". It's completely disrespectful otherwise toward Peppers when he has denied the report. That should be true with any Michigan player but even more so given the consistent high character that he appears to apply to life.
As far as the media rep reporting his departure, this happens all the time where a few shit media representatives think they by taking an educated guess to a story they can pretend to have inside information and gain followers.

If there was even the tiniest sliver of hope that he would return, you can guaratee that went up in smoke with Jake Butt's ACL and nobody can blame him. Anyone still clinging to anything here is absolutely delusional. God Speed Jabrill, best of luck on Sundays

Injuries are unpredictable for the most part. If you're assuming the worst is going to happen, then there's really no difference between him buying insurance and coming back, vs. him going to the draft and getting injured in his first season in the NFL. Deshawn Watson bought $10M in insurance last year for a chance at redemption in the CFP.

Come back, Jabrill.

You have a chance to go from one of the best talents to play at Michigan to one of the all-time greastest players to ever play at Michigan.

Beat MSU and OSU and get to that playoff, even win a Rose Bowl and that #5 is yours. Maybe not literally because retiring jerseys is stupid, but we all know who owns #2.

You need to show these NFL folks you can cover, you need to get more experience in this hybrid position. WE need you to get to where we want to be as a program.

This team belonged to Jake Butt, Chris Wormley and Jourdan Lewis.

Next year? Next year it would be Jabrill Pepper's team - no question.

A Heisman, a B1G Championship, the CFB Playoffs are still in front of you. Lead this group, lead these young guys and set a culture and a legacy that will last forever.

GO BLUE! #OneMoreYear

Please accept my humble thanks for all you've contributed to the University of Michigan and its football program. Thank you for the enjoyment I've experienced watching you play. Thank you for your commitment through good time and bad. All the best luck for the remainder of your athletic career and whatever follows it!

If so be it, I wish him well and thank JP for proudly wearing the Maize and Blue. I'm still trying to figure out why his disappeared up to the booth rather than rallying his team mates on the sideline....
