Exit David Dawson Comment Count

Senior OG Dave Dawson announced today on Twitter that he does not plan on returning for his grad year:

Despite a relatively soft depth chart and high rankings as a recruit (the sites rated him around the same spot as they did fellow Technician Michael Onwenu) the big Cass Tech product struggled to crack the lineup in four years. Offensive line recruits are notoriously late to develop and hard to predict, however the more time spent behind some below-average starters the less likely it seemed that Dawson would meet the expectations of a top-150ish prospect.

The closest Dawson came to starting was in the 2015 offseason, when classmate Patrick Kugler was hurt, Dawson returned from the offseason 20 pounds heavier, and practice rumors suggested he was pressing Braden at left guard. This site held out hope that Harbaugh and Drevno would manage to tap the potential of a guy Joe Mathis described as “one mean cuss” coming out of high school.

Dawson was running with the ones while starting right guard Kalis was nursing something just last August, but remained buried all season despite plenty of opportunities for OL to crack the lineup. Kugler earned an early start at left guard in place of Braden, and true freshman Ben Bredeson passed both RS juniors to start the remainder of the season at left guard once Newsome went down and Braden shifted out to left tackle. Onwenu, also a true freshman, siphoned seasoning snaps at right guard during this year’s garbage time, but Dawson played some right tackle against Illinois and even a little defensive tackle in the Rutgers blowout.

Just sticking around even this long was remarkable within the context of his class. In 2013 Brady Hoke brought in six offensive linemen rated 3 stars or above on the 247 composite, not counting the scholarship long-snapper. OT Chris Fox lost his career to a knee injury before he got to college and late offer OG Dan Samuelson retired from football before ever threatening a depth chart. OT Logan Tuley-Tillman was kicked off the team for some very bad behavior, tried and failed to transfer to Wazzu a year ago, and wound up at Akron, where he started 12 games at left tackle. The only significant contributor was OG Kyle Bosch, who transferred due to some personal issues when Harbaugh arrived, and wound up starting the last two years at West Virginia, earning all-Big XII this year. Kugler, the only one rated higher than Dawson, should have his chance to salvage the class of 2013 this spring.

With Kalis and Braden graduating, Bredeson expected to kick out to RT in place of Magnuson, and left tackle an open question thanks to Newsome’s injury, playing time on the offensive line was wide open for Dawson. Even a position switch to DT was an outside possibility given Michigan’s needs. If Dawson still didn’t like his chances to pass Onwenu and the other underclassmen, it’s probably best for for him that he use his grad year to go somewhere he can play. Meanwhile Michigan loses another bullet in a rather bare chamber for upperclassmen OL:

Via that depth chart Michigan now has 61 scholarships committed to currently returning players (including Peppers) and 26 commits, putting them 2 over the 85 they need to be at by the start of next season. Expected attrition from here gets that class to about 30 with room for some walk-ons to earn scholarships.

I wish him the best, but makes me sad to think of him and all the other uber rated recruits that Hoke brought in that just fizzled.  The most important thing, far above what he did or didn't do on the field, is that he got a degree of the highest value.  Go make an impact in the world Mr. Dawson!

Definitely bummed just from the back story perspective of this guy when we signed him.  Gosh those back to back OL classes were supposed to propel us to NCs.

Man I completely forgot about that.  For those who don't remember David's dad was an MDOT worker who was struck and killed on the highway during or right after his recruitment.  I can't imagine what that would be like.

Judging from his very gracious post above he seems to be doing his father proud.

Gosh those back to back OL classes were supposed to propel us to NCs.

This is why I find so many here (like you and Mr. Yost) to be so sad. Way too many future visions of sugarplums and fairies accompany your following of the team. Then you act mystified when it turns out to be anything short of that.

Another young man who came in with a lot of promise and because of 2 years of Hoke and non coaching never was able to take things to the next level.  The only kids I see in the O-Line that have improved are those that were never coached by Hoke and crew.  Really sad that was our downfall,  Harbaugh has been getting the most out of all of Hoke's prized OL recruits but it was never enough.  Let's hope we see better play and fewer blown assignments next year.

Glad he got his degree and good luck in the future.

If Dawson couldn't beat out any of the outgoing guys, that says a lot. OL was our weakest starting unit. The youth movement will have to be the answer next year, or a grad transfer.

This is cause to worry. I understand it from Dawson's perspective, but even if he couldn't crack the starting lineup next year Dawson was at least going to be the 6th OL, with is experience at a premium. Michigan was at least going to invite him back to spring camp and give him first crack at Kalis's job.

I don't remember him ever getting any meaningful snaps in 4 years. He probably knows he wouldn't start next year either. So i am confident new guys would have passed him next year too. They only have to find three starters other than Cole and Bredeson. Maybe Newsome will be back in time too. Trust in Harbaugh/Drevno.

"Only" need to find 3 OL starters at a position true freshman or RS FR often struggle.  No worries bro.

We also had very good injury luck this year - one major injury on both the OL and DL.  Next year may not be so lucky.   Having some 22 year olds around rather than a bunch of 18 and 19 year olds, even if the 22 year olds are not great is helpful.

Bredeson we hope improves - he looked lost vs quality OL.  As expected for a true freshman.  But "no worries" - starz and such with the new guys.

I don't see the need to worry. Bredeson and Cole are awesome. By all accounts, Onwenu is a beast. If Newsome makes it back that is four excellent lineman. Other guys have improved too like Spanellis and Ulizio. It looks like Ruiz and Filiaga are college ready. We will have 5 very good lineman next year. But if you and the other blogger want to "worry" about it, go ahead, I don't see the need. Drevno has coached up freshman OL starters before and can do it again

IF healthy I see the OL as Newsome - Onwenu - Cole - Spanellis - Bredeson

If not then
Bredeson - Onwenu - Cole - Spanellis - Bushell-Beatty

I'll take Brian's word that Bredeson will flip to RT. If Newsome isn't healthy and JBB isn't up to it, I'd flip Cole out to LT and draft Kugler in to C, leaving Onwenu and who ever else at G.

I appreciate your insights but I get a little tired of hearing how good guys look in practice only to have them fall back when game time rolls around. Bredeson, Kugler, Cole and Onwenu are the only OL on the team who have shown they can perform when the minutes actually count. I understand that there isn't much more upside to a 5th year Kugler but why do you put him behind Ulizio and JBB when the coaches put Kugler ahead when a game was actually on the line?

big11 I know you're the guy with the inside info, but I'm going to suggest another possible OL:

Cole-Bredeson-Ruiz-Onwenu-Ulizio

I'm no Dr but I hope Newsome can at least attempt a comeback in '18. Was his injury too late for a medical, or is that a case that could be made in the future?

My prediction is based on the belief that we will need Cole at T, and that the "pencil" will have its eraser used once Ruiz starts making proper line calls and moving guys out in spring practice. He strikes me as that player, rare as true Frosh starters are at C.

Well Cole may well wish to stay in the inside, and no doubt his physique is better suited to that if he should have a NFL career - but what's best for the team obvioulsy has to come first. I have not seen (nor heard those famous practice rumors about, even from yourself big11) that there are tackles who'll be on the team next year tearing it up.

That's the only thing behind my prediction. I'd love to be wrong, and Cole plays a much better C than he did in '16, and we're suddenly blessed with numerous strong candidates to play both RT & LT.

I preface every prediction or judgement I make about incoming players by saying I'm still expecting Sam McGuffie to blow up based on his amazing highlight tape - but I expect Ruiz to become maybe the most important OL we've signed in years and one of the best in the class of '17 at any school.

Why do I say this? Why am I confident a true frosh C might just be able to cut it?

Full time C at program operating at the highest level of HS football, essentially a football prep school recruiting blue-chippers nationally. Scads of reports saying no one moves him from his spot, not the highest rated DT he faced at All-Star games or camps or even his 5* teammates at IMG.

Cole was moved from his spot by every top NT we played, and while I don't have the knowledge to say if his line calls were spot on, I can see we were whupped frequently on the inside throughout the season. I'm not sure Cole is our optimal fit at C. We have several good candidates to be OG. Cole has performed better than reasonably well at T for 2 seasons already.

So while Cole's future may well be inside as a pro, his best fit at M might be at T.

That's all...

Kugler is the biggest mystery on the team, in my mind. He played in an early game for us, and played well. I really liked the way he moved and I thought he got all of the secondary calls right. Then he never plays again and now he's believed to not be in the top 5 for next season. Strange. I wouldn't bet against him winning a guard job next season, anyways. Have to believe that wasn't a mirage and he can be a consistently decent player. I wish he was in there on that first and goal from the one. The left side made a terrible call and let a free riunner come up the A gap. You have to believe a senior with experience making line calls from center would have gotten us in the right situation.

I'm glad to see this as it means that 14 class are not just space fillers in Ulizio and Runyan.  I think in another post you said Runyan looks like he is pushing for the 6th spot next year so if we get 2 contributors from relatively low ranked guys on the OL that will allow the young guys proper seasoning.  DT and OL are one place I'd really prefer to see guys get a RS if at all possible.

So the projected line would be 3rd year guy/2nd year guy/4th year guy/2nd year guy/4th year guy.  Not necessarily uber talented but at least a bunch of mostly 20+ year olds vs throwing 18 year olds out there with no S&C.  Runyan would be a 3rd year guy as well as the 6th.  Then I'd expect Kugler or Ruiz to be a 7th and 8th type as one of those need to be prepared as backup center in case of injury.  Not ideal but at least it's not asking 2-3 freshman to be out there.

Another reason I see Speight as the QB; I would not want Peters to be thrown out there vs FL and a lot more taxing first 2 months with that inexperienced of a line.  Also maybe Harbaugh is a sunshine blower but his comments post Orange bowl and late season about Speight (Heisman etc) make him sound like he really likes the guy.  I happen to as well - the guy shows pocket awareness and surprising mobility for a big man when a pocket collapses; which is probably going to be happning quite a bit next year.  Plus game experience is just difficult to offset.
