ESPN Is The Last Guy On Earth To Find Out About Miami
UPDATE: Fear The Hat adds SI and USA Today and deliciously points out that the Miami story isn't even on the front page of their college football section. Despite the name, FTH does not appear to be Les Miles fan blog.
It's about 2 AM after Charles Robinson reduced the already fairly smouldering ruins of Miami football to a radioactive field of glass. Let's check national sports websites to see what they think is important!
Yahoo Sports won't be a surprise but here it is:
What does ESPN think is important at this moment? Do you think it's something other than an earth-shaking, NCAA-threatening, death-penalty-warranting annihilation of a major college football program? Surely. Surely they have passed it over in favor of someone who plays baseball in the Northeast, because they suck that hard, you say?
WRONG, SUCKERS!
That guy totally plays regular season baseball… in Atlanta.
Goddammit, ESPN. Sometimes you do suck just as hard as everyone says you do. #freebruce #dontcallitashapiroback

I see you can't get any sleep, Brian
August 17th, 2011 at 2:37 AM ^
Double post! I'm awesome!
August 17th, 2011 at 2:58 AM ^
Delgado is just playing regular season baseball in Atlanta for tonight. Tomorrow the team calls up Jurrjens and he goes back to playing minor league baseball in Gwinett(well at least for a couple days)
August 17th, 2011 at 9:56 AM ^
GO BRAVES! Atlanta born and raised. Been loving the Braves since I was a tot and thought the national anthem was about our home team =)
August 17th, 2011 at 12:37 PM ^
is about the Braves. Or at least about Sid Bream.
August 17th, 2011 at 3:14 AM ^
Seriously. My northeastern baseball team clearly doesn't get enough attention! What is up with them front paging the Braves? Get a clue, ESPN! Looking at the bar of links on the right, I don't even see my team up there! There is something wrong with the worldwide leader tonight.
Edit: Shit I lied - The Sox are up there.
August 17th, 2011 at 2:31 PM ^
Boston fans are awful. Go away.
August 17th, 2011 at 3:35 AM ^
Is the fact that it was posted at 2:30 in the morning.
August 17th, 2011 at 3:45 AM ^
Thank you Brian for early reports from the media-watchdog niche you have effectively carved out for yourself and all those who call the Greater MGoWorld home. I too am enjoying the warm fuzzies in the dawn's early hours, watching movies with friends. Stay classy MGoBlog.
As of 3:44 AM EST 8-17-2011 ESPN is still in modo de beisbol. Hilarious.
August 17th, 2011 at 3:50 AM ^
If they're not shoving the Yankees or Red Sox or Jets or Patriots down our throats, gee(not that guy Gee), I wouldn't know what to do with myself.
In their defense, they did have plenty on it on "College Football Live". But still, it makes me wonder what their angle is all the time. They are mentioning the Lions a lot more, so there is that as Brian likes to say.
Oh yeah, Go Blue!!!
August 17th, 2011 at 3:52 AM ^
The only reason I can think of why it's not their top story is because they didn't break it, they must really have something against Yahoo when every other sports website is all over this. Welcome to the ESPN sucks hard club Brian.
August 17th, 2011 at 5:12 AM ^
Complain about the ultimate penalties (so far) for Ohio State, but ESPN gave ample coverage to the BTN associated Buckeye scandal.
ESPN is not capable anymore of objectively reporting on those properties in which they have large monetary stakes. And their stake in college football is larger - and most importantly more sensitive to negative coverage - than any other sport they cover.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:29 AM ^
Jonathan Givony had a tweet basically saying that either Yahoo has a lot more resources than ESPN and is doing a hell of good job breaking news or there is some other reason they are leaving these stories alone.
When you own tv, internet, blogs, radio stations, and essentially entire college programs it's hard to believe you would be objective nonetheless go out of your way to damage one of your own properties.
August 17th, 2011 at 5:11 AM ^
This ^^^ You nailed it SDW.
Their website still has the same front page at 5:00AM and their first six stories on Sports Center are all baseball. It took 10 minutes of baseball highlights before getting to the biggest story day, week, month etc...
"The U" is story number seven. Could they be any worse?
August 17th, 2011 at 5:21 AM ^
If Miami isn't their lead story at 5, that's shameful. They're distorting the news to hawk one of their own flagship newsmagazine programs. It's corporate muscle-flexing.
August 17th, 2011 at 6:49 AM ^
YANKEES! RED SOX! YANKEES! RED SOX!
August 17th, 2011 at 10:32 AM ^
SVP actually read the U story on Sportscenter? It was like he was reading a script in Soviet Russia on Pravda TV that if he said anything hat wasn't on the teleprompter he was going to be shot, sent to Siberia (i.e. ESPNNews), or mauled by a rapid ferret. Or all three.
August 17th, 2011 at 12:20 PM ^
How fast is that ferret anyway?
August 17th, 2011 at 8:22 AM ^
Definitely has something to do with ESPN's relationship with its partners, even if it is not "intentionally" missing stories. When it comes to sports they are not as connected to (like hockey), the stories seem to break all the time. But when it comes to a big-name program in what is probably their flagship show (CFB), they have been slow to respond. Heck, even when UM was nicked for those dumb stretching exercises, they seemed a little slow to report. But fully expect once the story has a day, ESPN will lay into them with all the hypocritical gusto and ratings-grabbing dribble all of their half-brained "analysts" can muster.
August 17th, 2011 at 11:45 AM ^
which would explain why the buckeyes case is getting more attention than what happen at UNC... a bit of a payback for that national championship
August 17th, 2011 at 12:55 PM ^
or it's because nobody cares about UNC football.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:52 AM ^
Have a friend who played for Miami during the Coker years. He isn't on the list of alleged players thankfully.

I went to a few games including their MNC win in the Rose Bowl over Nebraska and their win in the Orange Bowl a few years later.

I've been to the clubs with more than a few of these guys and see some pretty expensive bottles being drank at some swanky clubs. It was unclear who was paying for what but it was hard to care when the drinks were free.

Miami is a pretty sworthy town with questionable characters at best. Can't say I know any facts, but let's say it didn't seem kosher.
August 17th, 2011 at 6:28 AM ^
It's 6:30am the lead at ESPN has not changed.
August 17th, 2011 at 6:35 AM ^
Kudos to Yahoo for breaking the Miami scandal, but I don't see what difference it makes for ESPN to delay their coverage a little. They didn't break the OSU story either, but they covered it well with OTL reports and have kept the story going. Indeed, the main complaint from OSU fans is that ESPN won't let go of their story. If thet do the same with Miami I'll be pleased. Does anyone remember or care how quickly ESPN reacted to the initial Tat 5 news or to Dohrmann's story?
For you conspiratorial types a quick question, who broadcasts most of the B1G games?
August 17th, 2011 at 6:45 AM ^
August 17th, 2011 at 6:48 AM ^
It's cute if you actually think that.
August 17th, 2011 at 8:43 AM ^
August 17th, 2011 at 9:37 AM ^
It's not really a conspiracy in the slightest. They just place less emphasis on stories when they don't break them. Ohio is different in that Joe Schad claimed to be reporting things, so they ran with it (despite those tidbits already being reported elsewhere).
August 17th, 2011 at 6:46 AM ^
They're just waiting for Joe Schad to wake up so at noon so he can take credit for the story. Patience.
August 17th, 2011 at 7:33 AM ^
They're glazing over it now, not as much as the cooler poopers but it's early. Does this mean we get to hear OSU fans bitch about injustice all day?
The "U" just needs to the OSU defense and deny...."You can't trust Ed Rife/Nevin Shapiro...they're criminals." Or "Ted Sarniak/Nevin Shapiro are not boosters their mentors."
August 17th, 2011 at 9:01 AM ^
There's certainly ample material for OSU conspiracy theorists when the top 3 headlines on the right side are Miami, something about Tressel and something about Pryor.
August 17th, 2011 at 7:43 AM ^
It isn't even their top story within the NCAAF section of the site!
August 17th, 2011 at 8:03 AM ^
lets just hope when nbs rebrands versus to a legit sports network, they get some yahoo partnership since yahoo has all the real reporters and objectivity...
August 17th, 2011 at 8:18 AM ^
Atlanta Braves: so hot right now.
August 17th, 2011 at 8:23 AM ^
But are they NEXT?
August 17th, 2011 at 8:24 AM ^
This is just getting ridiculous - it is 8:30 am and the ESPN splash screen remains the same. I've read the entire article and I'm amazed this hasn't popped up on ESPN yet.
August 17th, 2011 at 8:27 AM ^
On another espn note, I did just see the new "it's not crazy it's sports commercial" with the guy proposing at Comerica Park. It's pretty funny. "she said sure!"
August 17th, 2011 at 8:35 AM ^
That is one of my favorite commercials next to the Ole Miss Admiral Ackbar and Michigan/Ohio State makeout commercials.
August 17th, 2011 at 8:52 AM ^
They need to bring the makeout one back. That was my favorite
August 17th, 2011 at 8:31 AM ^
Wow, ESPN completely buried it on sportscenter. It was 30 minutes in and was completely glossed over with no details.
August 17th, 2011 at 8:50 AM ^
Sure hope LSUFreek didn't have other plans last night.
The pressure is on for him to produce something epic.
August 17th, 2011 at 9:10 AM ^
If there's two men I trust in this situation, it's Orson and Freek.
August 17th, 2011 at 9:07 AM ^
ESPN is finally covering this seriously at 9 am on sportscenter. Only took them 14 hours...
August 17th, 2011 at 9:12 AM ^
But what about the Braves?!
August 17th, 2011 at 9:18 AM ^
9:20 am, and it's still Braves. But the headlines on the side says "No Miami suspensions yet". Uhm, yeah.
August 17th, 2011 at 9:32 AM ^
but the braves were the "highlight of the night"!
August 17th, 2011 at 10:01 AM ^
It's 9:47 am and ESPN just aired a terrible sports science piece on little league baseball compared to MLB that was filled with physics misconceptions. They actually confused angular velocity with torque.
No ESPN, all things being equal the lower fastball velocity in little league pitchers is resultant from the lower torque or more specifically the shorter fulcrum of the arm not the angular velocity (t = r x F) ... Come on a college freshman in physics wouldn't make this mistake.
August 17th, 2011 at 10:53 AM ^
Ok man, we get it. You dislike ESPN and think there's a massive KONSPIRACY.
They did lead with it last night on their 11PM EST Sportscenter and Scott Van Pelt did actually have a conversation with Charles Robinson for a good 5+ minutes on the scandal. However, they are not obligated to devote every second of airtime to the scandal, because I assume there are many Red Sox fans who don't care about college football and just wanted to see Ellsbury hit some home runs.
Do I think they are downplaying this? Yes. However I'm sure they will recap it during every Sportscenter and probably talk about it on every single show they do today, whether SC, PTI, etc. So give it a rest, unless you want to be known for both being in Bolivian and ESPN's Section 1.
August 17th, 2011 at 2:10 PM ^
Have you read up on any of the articles surrounding the allegations? Not only is ESPN downplaying this coverage by not having it be a main headline, but the article ESPN draws up is nothing vs what Yahoo! and other sports sites are listing. This guy is throwing Miami under the bus, for what looks to be the biggest case in NCAA history! Censorship at its best!
