Elite 11 Day 2

update from Scout

http://recruiting.scout.com/2/880832.html

Devin Gardner - Gardner is a superior athlete who is handcuffed a bit by a passing camp that doesn't showcase his playmaking ability with his legs. However, as one might expect, Gardner was solid in the bootleg drills, and while struggling hitting the deep out to live receivers, Gardner picked up his game in the target practice segment showing off better accuracy than many of his Elite 11 teammates.

Gardner picked up his passing significantly during the circuit target drill. Quarterbacks rotate to four different stations on the field and aim for different targets. It's a fast paced drill where the players work to get in as many throws as possible. It was obvious that the competitors were getting tired, but it was the mobile quarterbacks like Gardner who had the best success.

Regarding Gardner...... alot are overlooking the possibility of Gardner playing WR for us, with Forcier at QB. Supposedly Gardner is also a phenom at WR, and his passing mechanics leave alot to be desired.

I assume nobody mentions this possibility of being our next great WR, because he is so good at QB that it is unlikely. Somebody please expand on this because I've never seen Gardner play other than highlight clips, but have heard that every camp he goes to, he is both the best running QB and WR, but not throwing QB.

What I read is that his passing used to be horrible. But it has made decent strides over the past year or so. His throwing motion is still a bit awkward apparently. He is drawing the comparison to Vince Young because they are both relatively the same size and have a very similar throwing motion.

That being said, even though the motion might be a bit odd. It is very effective, as he has apparently been pretty accurate with it and can make most of the throws that the Rich Rod offense calls for.

Gardner also apparently was one of the best wideouts in camps he was going to as well. Which just goes to show you the absolute sick ability the kid has. I have a feeling he will be primarily used as a QB, but a few times a game, have him split out wide (esp in the redzone) and cause some huge problems.

"Michigan commit Devin Gardner (Inkster, Mich./Inkster) has also surprised many. His hustle, leadership and athleticism add up to a tremendous maturity that will help him compete early for playing time in Ann Arbor. He was a notch behind Bolden throwing it, but still has a strong arm and excellent size."

There is no doubt that with a couple years behind Tate he's going to be a pure beast

Gardner will be a QB - period

Gardner is the dream QB for RR's system -- a true dual threat.

Unless he cannot execute the read option, he is a qb to stay.

VY and some white dude QB with mobility that was a better passer shared the field. 2 minute drills had Vince on the bench, but otherwise Vince was in there...good lord did VY stink it up. He was making some WTF over the middle throws...but the tackles he could break were uncanny.

I see Tate as the man for the next 4 years with Denard/Gardner seeing spot duty simply because with guys like Stokes, Stonum and now Miller...we have to be a pass first offense--like the one Shaun King was in--in the years to come. What a waste of talent that would be if we weren't.

backfield should excite any wr. This will allow them more time to get open and get further down the field.
