Don't Try This At Home
You know, when someone left a comment to this effect on the blog earlier today I thought to myself "not freakin' likely" but it turns out that the reason defenseman Steve Kampfer is going to miss a lot of time is because a football walk-on suplexed him into the sidewalk:
Lieutenant Robert Neumann said the victim was picked up and “body-slammed” to the ground by a man, who was accompanied by two other men. … Multiple sources with knowledge of the situation said the attacker is suspected to be LSA senior Mike Milano, a redshirt junior on the Michigan football team.
Milano was a wrestler for his first couple years on campus, if you're wondering about the Macho Man antics.
Michigan Hockey Net spoke to a source close to the situation and has a sobering update on Kampfer's condition:
He said Kampfer ended up with a cracked skull and T1 vertebra and is in a head and neck brace. …
The source said he talked with Kampfer’s parents today and it will be six weeks minimum before his next review (NOT until he returns to the ice) and he could end up taking a redshirt and sitting out the season.
The fight was, reportedly, over a girl. Of course. Good luck to Kampfer in rehab and Milano in court. Except not really the latter.

I am saddened to read some of the comments written here. It shouldn't be about Michigan Hockey and Michigan Football it should be just about two boys. One viciously attacking another. I wasn't there but I know someone who was and what was reported was correct. And the girl they were "fighting" about was trying to escape Milano at the bar. So I don't care if Milano is a great kid, a good student, has an attorney for a father, or what not he assaulted Kampfer and if they weren't athletes no one would think twice about this story. Milano would be arrested and that would be that.
I hope the facts come out. This was more self defense than an unprovoked attack. Milano is a good student and a credit to the school. People (specifically, the hockey coach) are dragging his name through the mud without knowing the situation
Did you read the Daily article? Unless the witness is a complete liar it doesn't sound anything like self-defense. And who the hells body-slams someone onto concrete as an act of self-defense?
on anything else, and "knows" that Milano is a "good student and a credit to the school." I particularly like the "credit to the school" part. He provides no details as to how in the fuck this could possibly be self defense, just asserts it. If he was there (or was the perp), then he could provide details as to how in the hell this was "self defense'; if not, then he has no fucking idea what the hell happened.
Credit to the school. I like that.
Wait for the facts to come out.
I am ascerting he's a good kid. If you wanted me to use a cliche besides "credit to the school", then feel free to add your own. The media is portraying as a thug and a coward, and it isn't the truth.
the incident outside of what is reported. But your post and link didn't add anything factual, and certainly nothing that would support "self defense." But being down here in Durham, it is always prudent to wait for all of the facts to be ascertained before pulling a "Nifong."
I want to emphasize 2 things 1) Mike Milano is a good kid and a good student. 2) The way the incident has been reported is erroneous.
I am sure we are of the same opinion that we wish Kampfer a speedy recovery. But the story has unfairly relfected upon Milano.
1) Mike Milano is a good kid and a good student. You have asserted this several times. Are you related to him? How do you know this? How well do you know him. And how relevent is that really? Are "good kids" are unable to do bad things?
2) The way the incident has been reported is erroneous. What, specifically, in the reports (which what I have seen, are not full of details) is erroneous? How do you know what really happened? Were you there? What is it that you think you know and how do you know it? And if Milano is being treated unfairly, why do you not offer up ANY specifics as to his innocence?
1) I do know him personally.
2) I talked to someone who was there. The two got in a fight over a girl, and during the fight, Milano, a wrestler and a very strong kid, basically slammed him to the ground. If you follow that link to the ESPN story, there is a guy who posted the version of the story I heard, although he goes into more detail than even I knew.
The report says he walked up behind Kampfer and slammed him down. That is a despicable act. Milano would never do something like that. That seems akin to attempted murder.
Even good people get in fights. When twe guys fight, and one gets seriously injured while the other is unharmed, the unijured one always looks worse. He'll have to live with the consequences of that, but this wasn't the "sneak up behind him" deal that has been reported.
It doesn't matter if they were fighting or it was unprovoked. Milano broke the dude's head and neck and should see felony charges for his excessive brutality. He also should be booted from U-M. Maybe he can go be a credit to Michigan State when he gets out of the slammer.

I am not saying he shouldn't have been suspended. When your are a football player, being out and getting in a fight is never a good thing.
He won't go to prison, though.
That would be a failure for our justice system IMO. I guess if I saw a picture of Milano with injuries of his own from the "fight" that might be somewhat different. He shouldn't be suspended, he should be expelled from the school at the very least. I don't really care what the circumstances were. He committed a felony either way as I can't see breaking a guy's head open on the pavement as self defense.

Suspended, expelled are issues for school adminsitrators.
But legally, the penalty will be light.
And who the hells body-slams someone onto concrete as an act of self-defense? A wrestler.
I don't know what newspaper "The Daily" is. But if it goes along with the "Milano snuck up behind" version of the story, I am saying that version is false. I don't know if it is an eye-witness lying or what, but that version of the story is not accurate.
Here is the version I heard http://myespn.go.com/s/conversations/show/story/3645575
wow, the MSM got the story wrong. Who'd a thunk it?
No question, Jim.
Make him go back and live in Ohio, no posibility for parole.

Maybe being from Ohio had something to do with this??

Yeah Milano needs to be suspended for at least the first half of Penn State, probably the whole game even.
I would just ask that you don't believe everything you read in the Daily. Has anyone stopped to think that maybe Kampfer was not the innocent victim he makes out to be? Just checking.
Shit man, who do you think we are tOSU? He should sit THE WHOLE PENN STATE GAME. No excuses.
No question, Jim.
Hmm. Assuming we have all the facts, I agree with the comments. But, I'm not ready to hang this kid without hearing his side of the story. Maybe he was completely unprovoked, maybe not though.
i knew mike milano, he was the nicest guy ive ever met. Kampfer MUST have done something to cause the attack. im not condoning the attack, but i garuntee this was not a cheap shot or an uncalled for attack.
Michigan, home of the next pac-man Jones, Noel Devine and Chris Henry. Nice choice of coach, that'll haunt you guys for 5 years at least!
Late Saturday night, early Saturday morning, one of my buddies was on the balcony vomiting when he was suddenly being attacked by a group of guys throwing sharp, broken pieces of wood. I went out to try to get them to leave the kid alone so he could finish vomiting outside before coming back inside, but they were relentless. They were trying to get him to come outside to fight.
I said something along the lines of, "Are you really trying to fight a kid who's vomiting?"
The response was, "Then you come down and fight."
Eventually, our entire building was being bombarded with these shards of wood. They wouldn't stop until the police rolled up. Turns out Matt Hunwick was back in town, and he and a bunch of the boys from the team were running around causing problems.
I love supporting Michigan athletics, but it's important to remember that groups of college athletes (or college athletes individually, for that matter) can be pretty unpleasant douchebags. I'm embarrassed for both programs more often than not when I interact with the players themselves.
....hit anyone with the wood? I'm asking because his passes never hit anything. What a shame.
My booting buddy was surprisingly nimble when dodging the flying lumber.
Castration.
I have been able to stomach everything coming from Michigan Football this year, except this. The loss to Toledo is nothing in comparison to this behaviour... This kid needs to be so far removed from Michigan football that he is not allowed within 50 miles of Ann Arbor.
The rumor is that Milano is on roids.
See, the football team is so bad it's even dragging down the hockey team.
It is bad enough that the FB team sucks but now they are trying to ruin other sports. Unacceptable. Somebody get Manny Harris in protective custody - I fear that David Cone could be coming for him.
Then "kicked off the football team" should just be day 1 of his misery.
Day 2 can be "expelled from the Univeristy"
Day 3 can be "Sent to prison"
That is disgusting. Not only could that have paralyzed him, but it could have killed him. I hope this kid gets the maximum sentence. No mercy for a coward.
Fire Rich Rod immediately
Seriously though, thoughts and prayers go out to Kampfer. FYI:
let's just hope that Kampfer can walk again and that Milano gets the punishment he deserves.

Is it Saint Patrick's Day already?
Chicago, IL
Milano is going to get major time for this and good, former wrestler uses his skills as a weapon to assualt someone, he is going to get 5 years at least.
God, what the fuck has Michigan done for all this bullshit this fall.
Fantasy. Assuming that he's not been in serious trouble with the law before, at the worst Milano will be found guilty of aggravated assault and battery, a misdemeanor with a maximum sentence of 1 year in jail and/or a fine of $1000.
That's probably true for a criminal trial. But them're some pretty serious damages for a lawsuit, also.
What a b-hole.
He's a kid in college. They're going to win what from him in a civil suit? A fish tank, a 10-year-old Mustang and his Xbox? Granted that no one ought to be body-slamming anyone else into pavement and having done so makes Milano seem like a throbbing, just-crapped-out-last-night's-5-star-Thai-meal asshole, but his punishment just isn't going to be all that severe.
