If you dont take into account recruiting services and their rankings, is RR able to recruit a better type of player now that he is at UM? Did he ever say he is now able to recruit a better type of player? I know according to the recruiting service rankings he clearly is, but is the name of UM clearly helping him? Im interested in your thoughts. Mostly I was wondering if he ever said he can now recruit better at UM.
Did rr ever say he could recruit a different type of player by coming to UM?
He said (loosely paraphrasing)that the block M opened doors that were previously closed. However, he still has to do his recruiting.
do you by chance have a link? I would be very interested to read that quote if you can find that. Thanks.
The above sounds about right to me. He is not going to go around saying how much easier it is to recruit at UM than WVA all the time. I think if you look at the recruits he has got so far it about proves it. Even if the 2010 class doesn't get much better I think it out ranks his WVA classes. I think so far the biggest difference is the OL recruits he has been able to get. This is an area a believe the UM name makes a big difference.
Either that or the Jake Long and Steve Hutchinson names make it easier.
Apparently Rich Rod and Urban Meyer would previously exchange information with each other back when RR was at WVA. Meyer said that he no longer exchanges information with Rich now that he is at Michigan because he is now a recruiting threat.
I think that says more than anything Rich would ever say.
In other words, when Rich was at WVA, he couldn't compete with UF.
Now that he is at Michigan, he is. Rich could not have gotten his hands on Denard, Marvin, or Ricardo while at WVA.
makes sense. thanks.
I think it's a lot easier to recruit a "different type of player" when the product helps to sell itself.
At WVU, Rich Rod had to build it up from the ground and make them into a conference and perennial powerhouse.
At Michigan, he already walks into that situation and can just continue building from where the program is now. Albeit he took a step back this past year, the Michigan name sells itself and always has.
He can promise the recruits different things than what he had to promise them at WVU as well.
If you look at Rich Rod's recruiting at West Va according to Rivals...
2007 4 4-stars 1 5-stars (5 total)
2006 NONE (0 total)
2005 0 4-stars 1 5-stars (1 total)
2004 2 4-stars 0 5-stars (2 total)
He recruited a total of 6 4-star players and 2 5-star players in 4 years at West Va.
At Michigan, his first year he had 17 4 star players, then 13 4-stars and a 5-star player, and as of now, has 4 4-star players intending to come next year. I think with 38 4-star athletes plus a 5 star, he is definitely going to push the envelope on the kinds of players he recruit to maximize the team's potential on offense and defense. He had a good system at west va to win games with ordinary players, now he is probably going to get great players to win games instead of following the system only. I believe with all the WR he is recruiting, he wants to implement a pass heavy spread offense to compliment the run heavy spread he is accustomed with in the past.
It's like Urban doesn't have to say he is getting better players and different types of players to play at Florida than what he was used to in Utah.
The talent (at least according to recruiting sites) that he is getting at UM is already much higher then what he was getting at WVU.
I also agree about his desire to have a strong passing game. Hence, his strategy of going after solid to real good wr's.
As someone mentioned below, the fact that Urban Meyer won't get together with RR to swap x's and o's, says everything. At WVU, Meyer didn't really worry about RR being a serious challenger in recruiting battles. Now, it's a different story.
Yeah, that Meyer thing translates to a new adage: "Suspicion is the sincerest form of flattery."
It was Cal Magee who said that. IIRC, he said that here at U-M, he didn't have to tell a recruit where Ann Arbor was...
After the first recruiting year he was asked about the difference in recruiting. They had a video up on MgoBlue. Maybe it is still there, I don't know. But I am sure that RR made the comment about how the block M opens up doors a lot faster.
