Dewayne Peace Decommits, And, Yes, Is "Out"

By Brian — January 8th, 2009 at 2:36 PM — 17 comments

Well, at least we've been spared four years of tortured puns:

"To tell you the truth, I wanted to play wide receiver," Peace said. "I told the Michigan coaches that I wanted to play receiver. At the beginning of my commitment they said I could play cornerback or receiver. Then as time went on, I went on my visit and told them I just wanted to play receiver and if I could only play corner then I would look for another school to go to. They told me that it was fine and I could play receiver. Then something came up where they didn't land enough corners so that is where they wanted me."

And that is where he not wanted… him. Self. Or something. So he decommitted and is now favoring Kansas.

As usual, there are multiple ways to spin this:

  • Michigan would rather have Travante Stallworth and Je'ron Stokes and Willie Haulstead instead of the #100 player in Texas, or
  • They really really need corners.

Neither makes perfect sense, as Michigan isn't exactly overflowing with 2009 receivers of the not-slot variety and none of the receivers above look like locks or anything. But it's hard to interpret a conversation like "I know you told us if you had to play corner you would decommit, but we want you at corner" as anything other than a polite way to say goodbye.

That's fine if they replace Peace with an equivalent prospect. On the surface that shouldn't be too hard since Peace is a replacement-level Michigan recruit, but Chitownblue makes a good point when he notes that Michigan currently has no replacement-level recruits available at corner and will likely be offering a sketchy player or two at the position. The best case scenario appears to be an Adrian Witty (two star CB with KSU, FIU offers) commit that induces a Denard Robinson (big-time QB/ATH/DB recruit) commit. Then Tate Forcier becomes Colt McBabyJesus and Robinson is free to be a kickass corner.

That's a lot to ask for.

for a replacement CB is on Dale Peterman. He's good pretty solid film and he's a three star. He might have some grade issues according to the Rivals article (he denies it and says his grades will come in just fine) but he has an offer from Wisconsin and interest from some other BCS schools. that and he is already mentioning Michigan, so it should be an open and shut deal if we want it.

Hold on a sec Brian -

If we get Denard (**fingers crossed x 10**), you can bet he'll get a long look at QB and maybe even get some of the Carlos Brown/Justin Feagin ISQD plays next year.

But there's no way they simply stick him at corner with no shot at QB. If they wanted to do that, there's no way he'd ever come to A2, and goal #1 is to get him, period, regardless of position.

I don't think that's what Brian is saying. What he's saying is that if Tate claims a stranglehold on the job, Denard Robinson is believed by many to be a kick-ass CB prospect.

Everyone knows we're trying to get him as a QB. Brian's point is that is he comes, Forcier beats him for the job, and we landed someone like Devin Gardner next year, Robinson still has PLENTY of other uses.

Is it OK to panic now? Every week it seems there is another decommit. This team is starting to look very thin at LB and DB. The fact that we have a wide friggin' open QB position and only 1 QB commit this season is also disturbing. You'd think kids would be lining up to play here.

I'm really getting concerned about this program. There is a certain crowd that seems to see everything through Maize and Blue glasses, believing that everything will be fine since "Rich Rod did great at WVU" and so on. I'm having my doubts. You'd think he wouldn't be losing his QB recruits to friggin' Tulsa, for one thing....

I like thinking that this was Michigan's polite way of asking Peace to go, but I sincerely doubt it.

Be careful of giving too much credit to RR and his recruiting staff. I know they're on the ball, but it's a big football team, with a lot to do.

I think this was a miscue. I think the staff said "holy shnikes, we need corners," and called Peace and said "We really need corners. Is it okay if we ask you to play corner for us?"

And Peace probably nodded on the phone and muttered an "okay, anything for the team, coach," and then hung up with a pit in his stomach, and spoke to some people about it, and they said "You don't have to go there if you don't wanna play corner. Go somewhere else, and fulfill your dream."

I don't think this is a "FIRE RR" mistake. I think it's the natural kind of thing that happens when you've got a few midlifers trying to recruit athlete 18-year-olds. In that world, clandestine acts like this are doable, but less likely than I think we credit, whereas an "oops" can happen with the smallest human mistake.

(Blogger alias: "Misopogon") This team is under construction. We thank you for your patience.

That's not a mistake - it's just a thing that happened.
