It is obviously huge to have Gardner around for a fifth year in 2014, when Brady Hoke's OL recruiting will be emerging into upper-class years, Derrick Green is a sophomore, and Drake Harris is wearing the #1*. Getting a fifth year out of any starting QB is big time, especially one with as much upside as Gardner. Since he's pretty raw right now, he should use it unless he absolutely blows up in 2013—a problem I will take if it goes down like that.
Also a bonus is this presumably pushes the Morris/Speight/true freshman battle out to 2015, when Morris is (probably) a redshirt sophomore and Speight a redshirt freshman. Not starting a freshman QB is a nice thing.
*[Projection based on awesome dream. Also, Drake Harris is made of of mushroom marshmallows, the offensive line mutates into candybears, and Michigan beats East Magellanic Cloud for the Universe Title. Suck it, Bama.]
Man, he's grown up a ton since he got to campus, I'm really impressed. Hopefully that all shows on the field this fall and I think it will. Great to know he'll be leading us for two more years. I would not be surprised at all if he's getting Hiesman buzz or high draft talk before he leaves and I would not have said that after the spring game last year.
I hope he wins the Heisman and not the Hiesman trophy. Sounds sinister.
is like wearing F'Oakleys.
Nah, he just looks like he's not 12 anymore now that those braces are off.
Here we come.
Between Lewan, Green, and Gardner it's been a really good month or two for Michigan Football personnel surprises.
In the final analysis this might be as big as any recruit we brought in over the last two years. This is two 5-stars. This is huge, even if it means just one more season.
Maybe we should consider it as one 6-star player, since a redshirt SR QB who has already played well should be higher than unproven high school kids.
I feel like this is setting up for Football Armageddon version 2.0. Two undefeateds squaring off in Ohio Stadium. The only difference is this time it will likely result in a rematch the following week.
Maybe I'm being a little premature.
Won't the Big Ten have realigned by 2014 (putting us in the same division)?
Maybe he meant this upcoming year? Just a guess really
Can't be. Our next trip to Ohio Stadium is in 2014. We play the Game in Ann Arbor this year.
I suppose that is likely. I did mean in 2014. Thing is, with Jim Delaney at the helm, you never know what things will look like a couple years from now.
Yeah, by then we'll be playing Texas in the B1G South Division.
Texas? You mean Rice and UTSA? You're working under the assumption that the B1G is looking at expansion from an athletic/prestige/common sense standpoint. Cable boxes man, cable boxes...
Last fall I tried to engage some of our visitors from the south to discuss the topic of how Gardner compares to Miller, and they would have none of it. I think, if they both stick around there are going to be lots of comparisons, and at least two big showdowns. Miller is Tebow for Meyer's system, but Gardner is just as fast and quite elusive, besides being a better passer. If BuckeyeJonRoss and Urbanwarfare are still hanging around the blog I would like them to sound off.
This is fantastic to finally have confirmation. Great news!
However, I wouldn't be shocked if he has an outstanding season and considers playing on Sunday making this moot point. (perhaps unlikely, but not out of the question)
Regardless, is great that he will be able to play 2 more years
It would have to be one hell of a season for Gardner to go pro "early." It's pretty uncommon for QBs not to use up all their eligibility, and he would be going pro after just one full season of starting.
Maybe, but if that happens, and he looks good enough to go early, chances are that:
1. The Team has had a great season AND
2. The talent around him as stepped up to such a degree to make him look good, that we would be able to continue some semblance of that success after he leaves
So I'll take that trade-off everytime.
actually let's him relax enough in 2013 so he does blow up.
It'd be great to see him tear it up and have the choice to enter the draft for 2014.
The Gardner thing was great but the kid thing made me SMILE !!
Thanks NCAA and loosekanen
Even the colors are right.

The Ukraine is not weak!
Didn't realize that somewhere in this world unfortunate kids were still suffering with a Moe Howard 'do.
Welcome to Eastern Europe. We have techno and vodka.
Does anyone know if he's gonna get it? Has there been an annoucnement?
did you read the front page post?
Tremendous! That is great news for Gardner, that is great news for Morris to leArn on the job behind an experienced QB. This is huge!
Such great, great news
I posbang all
oh hellz yeah!
... But she seems to be an otherwise well rounded person.
I want to have unprotected sex with her.
She's dancing? I'll be damned, I must have missed that.
She undulates well.
She may not be a good dancer, but yet I can't stop watching it
I wish I could buy stock in Michigan Football. The storm is building once again.
I think based on impact, this is Muppets worthy. WOOOO!!!
So glad he was granted the redshirt year. It doesn't get much better than that. There have been very sobering posts about the huge value of upper-class quarterbacks and the huge detriment of freshmen QB's. (If one of you wrote those posts, or know the link, please put it in.) Regardless, if all goes well, Morris gets a redshirt in 2013, can get his feet wet in 2014, and should be ready to start by 2015, with an experienced, matured OL, 3 Fall camps, 2 Spring camps, and a little PT under his belt. We also have the opportunity recruiting-wise to really be at a QB in every class by 2015, Magnus' preferred reality.
Speight can redshirt while Morris serves as backup. Sweet.
Beyond awkward after the first time the interviewer mentioned it. Kudos to Devin for not acknowledging the dumb aspects...
