DG has been selected to be an UnderArmour All-American. Just reported at Rivals (literally 8 minutes ago).
great opportunity for him to schmooze up any elite players who might still be considering michigan...
I can't remember if there has been any mention of DG enrolling early..? If so, the UA-AA game would be a nice finish to his HS career.
I believe that when he committed he said that he was going to try to enroll early but nothing was certain.
Oh hell yeah.
I like the Army game better but good for him. ESPN only talks about AA players so it will get some buzz with them.
5th star ... please?
this tickles me too death.
Does anyone know if Terrelle pryor was always a 5 star or was he a 4 star for while? Hopefully DG can get the 5
I'm pretty sure TP was wire-to-wire 5 star and # 1 player in the country.
I believe he was born with five stars.
Any comment you make on this site I imagine Foote saying it in a smooth, suave Marvin Gaye-esque voice and then taking a puff of his cigar.
manly and classy
Why do people care so much about Devin Gardner's star rating? If five stars would make him a step quicker, add a little zip to his throws, fix his mechanics, and increase his completion percentage, then I'm all for it. But it won't.
If Gardner came out tomorrow and said "The creator of Rivals had sex with my mom so I'm never talking to them again" and Rivals retaliated by making him a -7 star, Gardner would still be big, fast, strong, and great at football.
I heard it was Scout.
For the same reason that there is currently a thread about "Rivals Team Rankings". That's why.
Not the same as a sunny day. I understand why someone wants a sunny day, there is a real benefit to the sun being out as opposed to it being behind the clouds. This would be analogous to saying "I wish Devin Gardner was better." We all wish he was better. What bothers me (and apparently Magnus) is that people aren't hoping for Garnder to improve, just for his rating (or his impression of talent) to rise.
This is like saying "I don't really care if it's actually sunny out, I just want a website to say so."
You and I are arguing different points. Clearly, we all want him to improve, I doubt you'll hear any argument on that.
I was arguing against the people who were saying, essentially "I want Gardner to get a 5th star merely for the sake of him being a 5 star player." There are people who, regardless of whether or not it's determined that Gardner is in the top 25ish players in the country, want DG to get a 5th star. My point was that DG is as good as he is, no matter what the sites say. If they give him another star, he doesn't automatically get better, nor will be have a lower ceiling if he never got more than 4.
I completely agree with the people hoping for DG's improvement, as I hope we feel that way for every M player and recruit. As for wanting an extra star for novelty sake, I couldn't care less.
There is a real benefit to many fans who don't follow recruiting as obsessively as most of us here. There is the benefit (real or perceived) of the positive media exposure etc...
I understand both sides of the argument here, and I guess I don't feel strongly one way or the other. I would love to see Devin get his fifth star, more for him than for any of us. It would provide some reassurance to our fanbase, through the media, that we are on the right track.
Edit: After reading what I wrote I guess I'm with everyone who really does want to see him get the extra star. The kid has been putting in the work, blowing up all of the camps, and showing great work ethic. I want to see this kid succeed. And I want to see the media stop bashing U of M and Rodriguez incessantly.
It's just nicer to say we got a 5 star QB coming in.
By the time he's done killing them at camps and all star games, he's going to be the #1 QB. And maybe #1 player.
Color me unsurprised.
I can't wait to see this guy play in the AA game. This will be amazing. FUCK SHIT UP GARDNER.
Hopefully he makes the best of his opportunity and makes friends with some other uncommitted players at the game. I am more excited about Gardner than any prospect ever.
Maybe he can get Kyle Prater to get Michigan on his radar again
Prater would be an amazing get...but I'll just be happy at this point if he doesn't go to Illinois
It's good to see he'll get some recognition for his talents. Can't wait to see him tear the other team up.
some ESPN Michigan love....holdin my breath
to shoot up in ESPN rankings. Like clockwork...
WTF NO BOISTURE???/
This is great news. I have never watched the UA AA game, I always just watched the Army AA game, but it looks like this year I will be watching both.
Lets hope Devin can kick some ass down there and keep us excited for the future of the RR ninja offense w/ Dennis Dixon at the helm.
Same here. I only watched UA AA game 2 years ago cause Daryl Stonum.
Is there any way he jumps over Gholston for #1 in the state? That would shut Sparty up for a few seconds.
As if logic and reason apply in East Lansing.
John Logic and Susan Reason both applied in EL, because they didn't get accepted at Michigan.
That's odd; they told me they both received acceptance letters from Michigan, but went to MSU because of their journalism/veterinary/cow birthing programs.
That and the hot bitches.
I don't think this is out of the question at all - a few folks had rumbled about it, especially after Gholston had a disappointing camp appearance.
Either way... #1 QB in the state should be secure.
but this is a good excuse to take in the UA one as well this year. I agree with Magnus anout the star rating stuff. Not that I wouldn't like to see him get the 5th star for his own satisfaction but it doesn't really do anything for us other than move us up on the rivals website. Anyway, well done DG and tear it up down there! Can't wait until he suits up for us!
just saw this in another thread. Congrats to Devin!
True, ratings do not matter much as they pertain to a player's abilities. I agree that going from a high 4-star to a 5 isn't going to have a direct influence on DG's future endeavors at UM as a QB, however....it can still have some impact.
Elite programs are able to attract elite recruits. Having a 5-star QB select Michigan is great PR and can influence the overall perception of the program, especially in recruiting terms. A top tier recruit will want to go to a team to play with other top tier athletes b/c they are more likely to be successful. Plain and simple. It adds prestige to the program, which helps pull in higher level recruits, which adds prestige to the program....and so on. USC, Texas and OSU fans don't fret about recruiting and positions of need and depth issues nearly the way UM fans currently do, because they recruit at a level where they are simply re-loading all the time. We need to get back to that level of recruiting to compete with those teams on a regular basis. I also believe that those coaches can expend less energy/resources on recruiting and apply that energy elsewhere in the program when they don't have to spend quite as much time 'beating the bushes', so to speak. They are automatically at the top of many recuits lists.
On a more specific level, receiver/running back recruits in the next few years will have some assurance that M will be fielding a QB that can make them successful, i.e. throw/hand them the ball, open things up for them by running the ball, whatever. If I am a Prater looking at a program, knowing that there is a 5-star QB in the chamber helps me assess M a little differently, as I no longer am betting that either Tate/Denard HAVE to pan out for me to shine. Even if they both tank as QBs (hopefully not), I am still looking at a 5-star athlete as the next option, rather than a ?Cornelius Jones? or ?future recruit? which I think is considerably more risky to him.
True, and well put.
