Devery Hamilton Decommits Comment Count

So this happened:

Per Baltimore (Md.) Gilman assistant coach Henry Russell, four-star offensive tackle Devery Hamilton has flipped his commitment from Michigan to Stanford.

Hamilton made it official Friday evening during his in-home with Cardinal head coach David Shaw.

"I think just the academics that Stanford has to offer and his parents having a family friend out there who can help make the distance more doable," Russell added.

This is absolutely not someone getting "processed," as Michigan needs offensive tackles and now doesn't have any in this class. Expect Ben Bredeson to kick out to OT. Michigan doesn't have any 2016 OL on the hook other than maybe GA OL EJ Price, a supreme longshot. They do have plenty of other guys looking to fill spots; it's possible they just try to lock down some 2017 five stars to fill the gap.

They were 1-11 the year before Harbaugh arrived and hadn't had a winning season since Tyrone Willingham was coach. Within four years, Harbaugh inverted their record, tacked on a dominating BCS bowl win, and produced two Heisman Trophy runners-up. I can't think of a more drastic turnaround.

That sucks, but it's hard for me to argue with his choice. Stanford is one of the very few schools that has Michigan beat on academics, hands-down. Michigan has the better football experience and the better overall package, but I can't blame a kid for prioritizing academics over football.

Wonder how long until ppl accept Stanford as a force all around. Better academics, check. We have a better football experience here? That is debatable. Stanford is/was a better team than us for a decade now. They are consistently ranked high, they send players to the NFL. As much as I love Ann Arbor, I lived in San Fran and worked many times in Palo Alto... The whole area is AMAZING. For 4 hours in any direction AMAZING (minus Oakland).

Notice how I said better EXPERIENCE, not better TEAM. Yes, Stanford has had a far better record than Michigan over the past seven seasons or so. But that doesn't make Stanford a better program. Stanford's facilities don't compare to Michigan's, Stanford's football culture and tradition don't compare to Michigan's, and the level of passion and enthusiasm for college sports in general in the Bay Area doesn't compare to the Midwest. The experience of playing at Stanford's 50,000-seat stadium (which hasn't been renovated since 1995) filled to 80% capacity isn't even in the same universe as the experience of playing at the Big House on national TV in front of 110,000+ screaming fans. If you drive by Stanford Stadium during a home game, you can barely tell that there's something going on inside. At Stanford, football is a nice leisurely distraction, whereas at Michigan, the campus culture revolves around football. Hell, pretty much every program in the SEC except Vanderbilt has a better overall football experience than Stanford. Also, I've lived in the Bay Area for over eight years now and I work near Palo Alto. Palo Alto doesn't hold a candle to Ann Arbor as a college town, and the campus life at Stanford doesn't hold a candle to the campus life at Michigan.

Stanford athletes at various airports waiting to board. (Cardinal teams fly commercial believe it or not.) They are studying and doing problem sets in line. That's what I'd want my kids to do if I had them. Perhaps Michigan football players are continually working the classroom like this, but I doubt it, call it a hunch. Stanford can be the superior place for an athletic kid who realizes that neither the student and almost none of his peers will ever see $1.00 from playing professional sports. I'd love to see Michigan's former athletes achieve off-field like Stanford athletes do - granted we enjoy a rather fine record compared with the non-Stanfords. Michigan should continue to pursue Stanford-quality student athletes but more importantly we should help construct the same sort of person in Ann Arbor. Then, we could land the Devery Hamilton's who would contribute long after their playing days are over.

Not worried Swenson and Hamilton never really seem like dominant OL players, especially not in the same respect as Onwenu and Bredeson have been talked up to be.  I think unless the silent commit is EJ Price (whom had considerable interest in UM, was #2 to UGA when he initially committed) signs Wednesday I think Harbaugh and Drevno raid the TEs for Wheatley whom by many accounts is AJ Williams+ size and still largely athletic at this point and focus on 2017.  In 2017 we are intial leaders for 5 stars Isaiah Wilson and Wyatt Davis, along with high 4 star Tedarrell Slaton.  We're looking great after our 2017 CFP Championship win.

Off with the Maize and Blue Glasses (They're making my head hurt)
