Devery Hamilton Decommits Comment Count

So this happened:

Per Baltimore (Md.) Gilman assistant coach Henry Russell, four-star offensive tackle Devery Hamilton has flipped his commitment from Michigan to Stanford.

Hamilton made it official Friday evening during his in-home with Cardinal head coach David Shaw.

"I think just the academics that Stanford has to offer and his parents having a family friend out there who can help make the distance more doable," Russell added.

This is absolutely not someone getting "processed," as Michigan needs offensive tackles and now doesn't have any in this class. Expect Ben Bredeson to kick out to OT. Michigan doesn't have any 2016 OL on the hook other than maybe GA OL EJ Price, a supreme longshot. They do have plenty of other guys looking to fill spots; it's possible they just try to lock down some 2017 five stars to fill the gap.

Well let's see what happens going forward, we've seen plenty of late pickups and signing day surprises before, why not now. We can also expect a tackle heavy strategy in 2017 and maybe a grad transfer or two. Lots to yet be resolved between now and the start of the '17 season.

Don't act like a spartan. .. This will be spun as Harbaugh getting what he deserves, and his greatest supporters - of which I count myself as one - will not be able to argue at all. But it does simultaneously support all the arguments made in the post-Swenson vortex that this is crootin circa '16 and people just gotta learn to deal with it. And for those saying players should have backup plans - does our staff? The board seems a bit short of OT...

and stands in Swenson's front lawn holding a boom box over his head blaring Peter Gabriel?

(and then The Victors)

Just crazy enough to work!

Yes, expect him to reach down to some 3* committed to a mid-P5 school and offer him a better deal.  "Snake oil" happens all the time.

It's Darwinian, but hey, it's a jungle out there.  Eat or be eaten.

Trust in Harbaugh, I know, I know...but there are some potential gaps on the roster that are concerning.

OT and DT- Ideally, you want to get your OL and DL guys a redhsirt, then another year for weight/strength gains before having them see significant action but it doesn't look like they'll have that option in 2017. I have no doubt that Harbaugh will fill the gap next year with 5 star recruits but they can't be expected to play significant minutes in 2017.

At Tackle, losing Hamilton hurts, especially after losing LTT earlier in the year, now they're looking at shifting positions on the OL/TE to fill it, which isn't ideal.

At DT in 2017 they have Mone, Hurst Jr, Pallante and Dwumfour...that's it. Mone and Hurst should be a solid pair of starters but Pallante doesn't look like a long term answer and Dwumfour will only be a RS Fr with no experience. Being weak up the middle is why OSU destroyed Michigan with their running game the past 3 years so this is even more concerning than the OT issues.

And all of this isn't taking into account injuries (like Mone, Glasgow, Ojemudia) or early draft entries(If Hurst plays well he could possibly go in the 3-4 round range).

Well when you have one class with 16idh kids in it followed by another with 14ish kids in it this is what you are going to get no matter what happens without a ton of luck. This team was always going to look pretty young in 2017 no matter what. Next year is critical, but we have a long way to go between now and 2017 and a lot of recruiting and possible transfers yet to see.

Man, recruiting is a saga and a huge drain on coaches' time and AD resources. This may sound crazy, but I think recruiting should be limited to a one month all out blitz in January of each year. Would save a heck of a lot drama and wasted time. I realize the team wouldn't get the benefit of some things that happen in protracted recruiting period now, but would it really matter since every team would be operating under same constraints?

Surprising, well it was surprising last night, but mostly that one expected TE and O Line recruiting hauls when Harbaugh and Drevno came to Michigan. Seems like our top TE and OLine prospects aren't very interested yet.

but this is balls (not ballz). Best to the kid as you can't go wrong with Stanford but it stings. We really needed him, he's very good and losing someone like that to the program our HC resurrected from the dead makes it sting extra hard. Stanford is the kind of school that you just have to tip a cap to in loss because they have zero negatives. Even with the man that resurrected them from the dead as our HC we can't get very far mentioning that because they're still a good program at an A+ institution in a solid location. If Jim had turned Kansas into a power that would have a TON of weight. With Stanford it's like "yeah, that's great but they're still good and it's maybe the only major football program that is better than Michigan academically".

This is bad, but I'm guessing this increases the chance one guy stays for a 5th year and the scholarship is banked. That's assuming Harbaugh doesn't have another backup option at OT already on the hook.

No. Swenson is off the board. He didn't improve during his senior season. He blew off Harbaugh when Michigan requested Swenson attend their summer camp. Swenson made no effort to attend one of the many HS AA games, and he didn't even official visit to Michigan. He won't fit in with where Harbaugh is taking Michigan.

I didn't say it did...the coaches have their reasons and I'm not going to question them. Maybe they just didn't like how the family handled the process? Maybe they didn't like how he wouldn't came? Maybe they thought he sucked? Maybe they thought they could do better? Maybe he just wasn't a good fit for their pogram?

It could be any or none of these...only they know.

But clearly other respected coaches think he can play. So I don't think it's that he flat out can't play the position is what I was saying or trying to say. But the coaches have their reason and we're not going to find it out so it is what it is at this point.

Already looking towards the future.
