Did he give a reason?
Dann O' Neill quits team
I hope he left because he heard Seantrel is coming and would take any playing time he might get.
I remember him cause he played in my conference in HS and he beasted everybody. That's a disappointment...
he spells his name 'Dann' though, right?
Maybe he did it because he committed to UM under Carr thinking he would be the next Jake Long. After 2 years in the system he has realized that being a quick, mobile lineman doesn't translate to the NFL as well as playing in a prototypical offense. Along with that, he did not make any noise during the spring and doesn't seem to be coming along as expected...
one year. He's a redshirt freshman this year, right?
Yessir my mistake.
I would like a link please.
i have to say sadly that ive heard the same thing too... hes been gone since like early this week
Sorry, where was he expected to be on the depth chart this Fall?
This isn't meant to be sarcastic, I don't have the 2-deep memorized.
You would need to have more than the two-deep memorized to know where O'Neill is.
Wasn't someone joking about him leaving a couple weeks ago on this blog?
Still hope it's not true.
Pastor Paul was the preacher at my Lutheran preschool 20 odd years ago. Creepy.
Negative eleventythousandbillion to you sir.
That'll be bad press.
weird. i just saw him on campus 2 weeks ago. im going to ask my only hint of an inside source if this is true
I either hope this is not true or what sammylittle said he heard Sentrel was coming to AA and got scared. Still huge loss please don't transfer to tOSU not another one!!!!!!!!
i dont think that anyone would quit the team because they heard a senior in HS committed to the team that won't play for another year. also, the fact that it is advertised as quitting the team leads me to believe that he's probably not going to go to another big 6 school for football. obviously that is just rampant speculation though
Doubtfully but I can speculate can't I?
Believe me, my source is reliable....I don't want to reveal who though for their sake. (I realize I am pissing you off by saying this...)
Look, I love Michigan football, and I'm not a rumor-mongerer. I don't tell you this stuff for fun, or to stir up trouble. I actually WISH that I turn out to be wrong about this.
just out of curiosity, has your source ever made comments of what he expects the teams' performance/record to be next year?
determining causation here. The story of O'Neill's leaving the team had no traction until Mr. Tressel posted the story. It may be that Mr. Tressel's posting about O'Neill caused him to leave. If this is the case, he owes us and should be forced to post about an awesome recruit who will soon sign with UoM.
Was this one of the "couple" that RR was referring to when he said a couple more would leave?
Good luck to him in whatever he does from here though.
Isn't this relatively common for O-lineman because of the demands put on them?
Schiafano[sic],Gallimore[sic?] and others left under Lloyd.

That thread reminds me...anyone know why Chitown peaced out of MgoBlog? Was it the anti WLA backlash stuff or did he get sick of the quality of comments and the board? I rather enjoyed most of his meanderings.
He did it because of you, Dad.
He learned it by watching you.
The board has been semi-reasonable lately, plus I don't think we bother to argue anything anymore. How I have so many posts though, I have no idea, but it was a slow week at work.
I personally suspect someone at Buckeye Capitalist Mercenaries has been posting under your name.
because i miss you and your crush on me
I'm sorry that I, and others, have done something bad enough to make you follow up every mention of our name with a snitty comment. I don't remember what I did, but sorry.
For your information, I am not, as you claim, a "12 year-old girl". While female, I turned 8 last month. Here's a picture:
It's typically, "our opinion has facts behind it does yours?" Plus, MgoIdiots is directed at idiots, not everyone. We also argue all the time, it's just nobody takes it personally because people can admit when they are wrong.
Some people (BRODIE) are giant cockbags way too often. But he's gone, and that's made things a lot nicer actually.
My Source comes from some guys on the team I know. this is no bull shit.
you will see that RR will announce it.
Then...do you have a reason?
Not surprised he is leaving our team. But, kind of surprised he is quitting football totally. Are you sure he is not transferring to a system that fits his skills more, instead of just totally quitting football?
Said he is lazy and plays video games a lot. I guess he didn't get the memo you actually have to workout in college.
Said he is lazy and plays video games a lot. I guess he didn't get the memo you actually have to workout in college.
regardless of whether or not this is true, I think it's pretty shitty of you to put it out there before the kid has a chance to.
Surprisingly, I don't have an opinion on this.
O'Neill leaving not just bad for TEAM but awful for PROGRAM, just epinion
I don't see how it is shitty of him to say it. When people get a tip on someone committing to UM or wherever no one says that it is super shitty of someone for saying they are blue. Eh, not that big of a deal.
Put yourself in O'Neill's shoes. Perhaps you might not want to whole world to know something about yourself and some douchenozzle with a whorish mouth blabs it to everyone.
hey buddy, its the internet. im sure mr o neill isnt kicking himself because mgoblog's mgoboard scooped the story on his alleged departure.
you're not the wla, stop acting like it.
It seems more like it's his opinion on the matter. That's it. Not to mention, a WLA member has already posted in this thread with a comment that does not conform with Chrisgo's. So to the extent that member represents the WLA (and it bears repeating that they do not act with a hivemind...most of the time), it would not seem that Chrisgo is acting like the WLA.
He is sort-of a de facto contributor over there.
I don't think you realize how popular this site is.
chrisgocomment....I didn't see you whining when McGuffie transferred and it was leaked here. Or when Threet left. Or when Wermers did...etc, etc.
Which is to let O'Neill dictate his own terms for announcing his departure. It's his life, after all. I understand that you simply wanted to share information, but let's afford him a little privacy.
If you want privacy, don't play football for a big time (or any 1A) college program.
Whether players like it or not, when they play a sport that is always on TV, generates millions of dollars, has hundreds of thousands of fans, and may potentially go to the NFL, they lose the same privacy that you or I get (because people who don't know us, don't care about our lives).
Also, until someone with credibility (e.g. Brian) acknowledges this (which he sort of did), it's just a rumor (of which the Internet is full of about every public figure).
As much as college football has become an institution that generates millions of dollars in revenue with loads of fans that watch on national television each week in the fall, it is still an institute of higher learning and the student-athletes are still uncompensated amateurs, aside from their scholarship. That hasn’t changed. It does change when they enter the NFL.
I view this issue as less of a legal right to privacy (I don't believe there's much case law on the subject, aside from those discussing utilization of a student-athlete's likeness for commercial gain), and more of an ethical issue. I don't mean to imply that JimBobTressel was acting unethically, but at some point we need to let go and let the student make decisions in his life without our scrutiny.
Obviously, this is my opinion and there is room for debate about all of this, but I believe the student is permitted a degree of privacy even if it’s less than what you or I enjoy, and off-the-field actions are largely none of our business unless reported by the school or the student himself. It’s a dangerous slope if we go too far beyond that.
The veracity (or voracity) of the rumor and the credibility of the source are a separate issue. I did not question the credibility of JimBobTressel or his information, as I had no reason to question it.
I don't really recall the details of their transfers or how that information came out.
My recollection is that Brian was the first to mention it. He's built up credibility over several years of writing this blog. You're just some guy, who has a friend of a friend, etc. You don't have any credibility in the matter (nor do I, but I'm just disagree with your decision to write this).
And I see that Brian has responded in this thread that he thinks it's true, but he still didn't feel comfortable posting it.
Just my epinion.
So you don't want to hear the most up to date information, regardless of whether or not it is confirmed? This is a BLOG for crying out loud. I think it's shitty of you to make this guy feel bad. All he is trying to do is provide us with a scoop before it is official.
in this case i'm pretty apathetic about the "right and wrong" of posting the 'news' since it seems pretty likely to be true, but if someone posts every little news story that may or may not be confirmed then eventually it's impossible to tell if something is true or not. i think at some point you have to cut off or else the board turns into 30 posts a day claiming that "player x is transferring" and none of them are true. then what's the point? it's just a bunch of a noise.
Suppose he had second thoughts? Having his business all over the Internet makes it more difficult to decide to change his mind and stay with the team/football/whatever. Bridges burnt.
Really? I somehow can't imagine O'Neill saying, sorry coach Rod, I was going to change my mind, but some random guy on MGoBlog says he heard from some dude on the team that I quit, so I guess it's a done deal.
If anything he'd be able to make all of us look like morons for prematurely jumping on the story. I just don't see how an online discussion burns any bridges, or makes his return (or not leaving) less likely.
I like turtles.
I doubt I made JBT feel bad, but if I did I apologize. I'm sure he's a fine American.
He doesn't look like a football player so I understand the lazy thing and wanting to play video games.
let me guess, he dips a lot and plays video games?
Doesn't look like a football player? WTF does that even mean?
Just ignore the comment. R_mahorn74 is just another high school kid who doesn't know shit.
R_mahorn74 is to MGOBLOG what JT the Brick is to talk radio, he brings everyday! He might have you shaking your head but the Kid is entertaining.
Anyone who looks like me (6-1 180 w/ small beer gut) doesn't look like a football player. Dann O'Neill on the other hand looks a lot like a football player. In short, I agree with Jay.
you have it down, exactly
Wow. I mentioned on here a few days ago that I wouldn't be shocked if O'Neill would be the next player to leave the program. I thought it would happen after the season, though. Sad to see such a talented kid go.
i was really surprised when i saw you had guessed the person right specially since i just said OL.
I second the bullshit call. Only because in the original post the source was stated to be Dann himself and in subsequent posts the source has changed to others on the team.
"I know him personally, and the truth will soon spread."
"My Source comes from some guys on the team I know. this is no bull shit."
your an idiot, i do know him, and guys on the team told me about departure.
I do know him personally, but he didn't tell me this. His teammates did.
Think this is legit: Tom is getting some preliminary confirmation. After the McGuffie thing we're pretty hesitant to say anything for 100% certain, but... yeah.
Then....WOW. Unfortunate, but these things do happen...
My source tells me that being on the football team made it too hard for O'neill to appear out of shape at high school water polo matches.
Not to dredge up the whole "recruiting rankings don't matter" debate again, but O'Neill was a pretty highly regarded 4* LC recruit while Omemah and Khoury were meh 3* RR recruits. In light of this, maybe we should give RR a little latitude in finding recruits that best fit his style and program. I'd much prefer 3*s that work their arses off and overachieve than higher profile players that don't fit the program and leave.
This would make more sense if people like Taylor Hill, Sam McGuffie, Marcus Witherspoon, and Kurt Wermers hadn't already left the program. The latter three committed to Carr and stuck with Rodriguez; but Hill followed Rodriguez from WVU to Michigan...and quit before playing a down.
This has very little to do with Carr vs. Rodriguez and much more to do with Dann O'Neill vs. football.
I don't think it takes away from your overall point, but Khoury committed to Lloyd Carr, not Rodriquez. His commit date was 6/25/07. Also, I could be wrong, but wasn't Carr interested in Patrick Omameh too, even though he committed under Rodriquez?
I was going to mention this, too. You can't blame Lloyd Carr for O'Neill and then give credit to Rich Rodriguez for Rocko Khoury. They're both on Carr's legacy, both on Rodriguez's legacy, or the blame/credit should be shared by both coaches.
Should've kept it simple and not confused things with LC vs. RR recruits. Next time I'll consult the pet bulldog before posting a comment.
If he transfers, that will be another black eye in terms of anti-RR media, which will increase negative recruiting and hurt us. Which sucks.
those black eyes will be covered up by the cool shadesthe program will be wearing in 2-3 years when we start winning games again.
That's the one thing you can never tell about a recruit especially a huge OL in HS who can dominate without trying. College is a whole different story and the amount of work these kids put in is unbelievable. If your heart and desire is not there you can't succeed.
As for all those who talk about the change in offense, they are still running a zone blocking scheme which is what they ran when Jake was here. Contrary to rumors the NFL does have teams that run this scheme.
Hope Dann does well in whatever he decides to do unless it involves Scarlett and Gray or Green and White.
I completely agree with the first part of your statement. Real good HS recruits have it made in high school. They don't have to practice hard and can get away with pretty much anything. Then the come to college and they are just another player on the team. They have to bust their butts like everyone else. Sometimes Frosh, especially the big OL and DL, aren't used to all the conditioning and time/effort that is put into playing football. It's easy for some of these guys to get burned out on the sport and not want to play anymore. Some of these guys thinks it's all fun and games...until they get to college. I remember when I was in high school, I broke the back part of my thumb and had to have it wrapped. I practiced for maybe 30 minutes a day. I had it made, but I was also the second leading tackler on the team as a DE and led the team in sacks. BOY did I have a wakeup call when I went to college to play football
...didn't even wait until his third post to talk about his high school/college athletic achievements.
I don't know what you're talking about. He sounds like a real baller. I can't wait to hear more about that "back of the thumb" injury. I mean eff dude, it was wrapped and everything.
I love smartasses...you probably don't know a thing about playing any sport with an injury. It's hard to get them sitting on your fat tail playing NCAA Football on XBL.
Well, I simultaneously dislocated *and* broke my right pinky finger while on the 8th grade team. But wait, hold off on the nasty reply. I know you're going to like this story because I played through it with a small soft cast, some foam... and it was wrapped up! :-)
Seriously though. Take a joke man. I'm sure you were (and are) a better athlete than I, but you have to appreciate getting your chops busted a bit for telling us all that you were the man in High School.
The point of what I was trying to make wasn't that I was the "man" on my team, but that star players (which I wasn't) in high school have no real clue the demands that are put on them in college. Some aren't ready for it. Although they may say they do, I don't think star athletes realize they don't get special treatment in college like they are used to.....or how they will actually have to work as hard as everyone else
I hope that everyone here knew what your point was. It was well-written.
But immediately following your discussion of star players with your own high school and college accomplishments implies that you're including yourself in that group (intentional or not). I didn't think you were being a douchenozzle (to borrow the expression) but did find it at least slightly more than minimally humorous, and worth a comment.
In my opinion it was not, however, worth the three comments from me it has now received. Sorry if you took great offense... Only minimal offense was intended!
No Problem......but I bet you that if my screen name wasn't that of WVU....or maybe he thought I was from Appy St, that nothing would have been said about my comment
blocking dummy on my high school team.
I waited for 50+ points, but I just couldn't keep it in any longer.
now might be a good time to add that i was the 4th leading special teams tackler in the 3rd game of my Senior year. i had it made cos i was the only senior on JV.
YOu are a complete idiot....and it's obvious you don't know a damn thing. I've actually been on this board for a very long time but had to re-register, so thanks but I'm not a noobie here. And don't let my name fool you.....WVU is my team, but I am a HUGE fan of Michigan football and RR. Just check out Scout's board and you will see.
And if you don't believe that high school stars have it made in high school, then it's obvious you don't know much about these athletes. I wasn't trying to boast about what I did in HS, I only went to a small DII school...but I have coached in college and high school and I know what players get away with.
will be the day that the rest of the world catches up on this and it's a big 'telling sign' about locker room atmosphere under Rodriguez, wheels coming off, etc. The media will build all kinds of poop on top of this. Great.
And of course, the official response will be:
WE ONLY TALK ABOUT PLAYERS WHO PLAY FOR MICHIGAN. (Which I like.)
...it IS a "big telling sign" about locker room under Rodriguez, but I would say in a good way. Rich Rod wants players who love to practice, who love to play, if the kid is going to quit, that just means another kid off the team who doesn't love football. That means the players that remain are buying into Rodriguez's work ethic and demands. I would much rather that the kids who don't want to do it, won't. If he wants to leave, best to him. But if he didn't have the ethic, he'd have never played for Coach Rod anyways.
EDIT: if you're "friends" with him on Facebook, there is pretty clear evidence he's leaving the team.
And our APR drops again....
It only drops if he transfers, not if he quits the team and stays at Michigan for schoolings, learnings, fun, and stuff.
that this is why David Carridine died.
from that five point palm-exploding heart move...
While it sucks that he is leaving....I don't think it will be a huge loss for the team or program. He's only a redshirt Frosh, but he didn't do very well in the Spring and was playing on the third team. As young as these guys are, he probably wouldn't play much until his Junior or Senior year and that's if Michigan doesn't get someone else to step up and play in front of him. It hurts as far as depth goes.
Dammit! I told you Rodriguez needed to recruit more guys from Michigan! son of a
